its more about the mileage, porsche suggests not doing competition before the break in cycle. this could be more part of the 'driver' breakin as discussed in breakin threads.
that said, the track is a great place to get a feel for the car's limits, its nver too soon.

My car comes next week and I am planning on an autocross Sept 17th. I am sure I will have 2,000 mile, or close to it by then. I will wait longer before doing a track event (4-6 mos.) which have much higher speeds and resulting stresses on the car. I personaly will want to have a high comfort level that the car is fully sorted before braking from 130+MPH for a hairpin (like Andretti corner at Laguna Seca)

Gary congrats on the car 
not trying to critique your choice but i would think that autocross can be more stress on the car because of rapid brake-turn and accelerate as opposed to track which can be much smoother even if at higher speeds
for instance during breakin you can go well beyond 100 mph yet still be under 4200 rpm
but i would have to agree about the sorting out part since autox is much safer

Collected the car and booked in it on the track same day. Had about 1500miles when I went on track. Had about 1650 miles before I needed two new rear tyres !!

You may be right about the stress of an Autocross, I'll probally go 80-90%. The really reason is my piece of mind. At an autocross if something goes wrong all that happens is that cones get killed. At a track the results of a mechanical problem can be much more dramatic. Don't get me wrong, Porsches are extremely well built cars and very capable of performing flawlessly at track speeds ( probably with less than the requist 2K miles). But I have become more carefull in my old age and want to make sure the car is sorted and perhaps just as important, that I am comfortable/compentent with a new ride.
