    Base Cayman out in January

According to CAR magazine (September) "the entry level cayman due in January 2006. It won't cost Pounds30k, as intially planned, but with luck the price will start with a three"

It seems rather soon after the cayman s's late November launch. Could this mean not a high level of pre-orders?

Re: Base Cayman out in January

Hmm, maybe they will release the specs in Jan, but I highly doubt production will start so soon. Any word on the specs at all?

Re: Base Cayman out in January

You're probably right. No mention of specs. It merely goes on "Why's it more than the base boxster? Because the Cayman's 3.4ltr six has the variocam head, giving a meatier 250bhp."

Re: Base Cayman out in January

I'll be shocked if the base Cayman contains a 3.4L mill, even if it were to be released in January.

thought it will be a 260hp?

Re: Base Cayman out in January

Not sure. 250 was what George Kacher mentioned in his article last month in the same magazine. I suppose it all depends how they price it, parity with the boxster s, or in between the two boxster models.

    Rumors are a 3.0L (between 987 and 987S, just like Cayman S's 3.4L is between 987S and 997 - same as price-points).

Re: Base Cayman out in January

    Thanks Grant, that makes sense.

As for pricing...Porsche makes their pricing quite clear-it tracks the car's horsepower. So if the base Cayman is 250-260hp, it will be between the Boxster and Boxster S in price.

Re: Base Cayman out in January

A 3.0L w/ 260hp priced between the Boxster/Boxster S is most consistent and logical. I don't think we are going to see the standard Cayman for some time. Porsche's decision to begin with the S version was carefully considered to give the most boost/fanfare to a model which is essentially a derivative of an existing model. The Cayman and Cayman S could easily have been introduced in the same fashion as the 997/997S. It seems to me that Porsche is testing the waters with this model, and while I expect sales to be good, if this is not the case, Porsche can easily retire it without any great loss of capital/profit. My sense is that Porsche would rather risk a poor sales performer with a high end Cayman than risk its high end image with a low end (sub 40K USD) "Boxster Coupe" even if sales were brisk.

Re: Base Cayman out in January

With HP escalation in the state that it is today.....IMO a base Cayman with 250/260 HP would be a waste of time in the US. With the pricing structure the way it is, the Cayman S should have been the base, with the real S being a 325HP / 3.6L car. ( I know, don't need to go there again.)

The Boxster is a little different here. The 240 HP model is just fine for people who want a less expensive, fun-to-drive, quick drop-top, with all the great qualities of a Porsche, but I think Cayman buyers may be looking for a little more performance. The defacto power for a serious premium coupe in the US market place today should be around 300.
