Taycan ST vs EQS580
I'm on my 2nd Taycan, now. The first was a 2020 Taycan Turbo and now I own a 2023 Taycan GTS Sport Turismo.
I switched from trunk-equipped to hatch-back to improve cargo handling of Amazon delivery boxes, etc.. I have everything shipped to the office and handled by my warehouse manager instead of home delivery managed by porch pirates. The Taycan sedan's trunk often frustrated loading because of the high entry angles required for larger boxes. The ST hatch is MUCH better for large boxes.
But, .... the weird telematics (though vastly improved) continue to bug me and the latest twist makes me not trust the 2023 model for any kind of road trip where juicing up at a DC charger is required. The new bug for this car is the motorized charging port covers messing up. Because the car has 2 charging ports, one on the driver side and another on the passenger side, there must be an interlock so that no driver can manage to connect both ports to 2 EVSEs at the same time ... ... POOF.
Because of the interlock, if the AC-only port door becomes confused about proper operation, it is impossible to open the cover to the CCS1 port. Apparently, there is a calibration routine that is run through PIWIS that makes the door work just right. It seems my 2023 GTS ST has a habit of forgetting the calibration or has some other issue that causes an operational fault, which is "fixed" by taking a long nap (or several) after which it operates correctly. This is not a big deal when operating locally and charging at home in the garage. But, .... I don't fancy being stuck for an unknown amount of time at a Electrify America DC supercharger in the middle of nowhere while the issue resolves itself. The dealer has tried in vain to make iit happen while in for service, so I can't fault their expended effort.
Nonetheless, this has my eye wandering about for another battery-electric daily driver with some panache. I could do Tesla because our family's long experience with thier cars has been much less worrisome. But, the current Tesla offering is a little less turned out in interior richness and features than I would like.
The other EV w/hatch candidate that caught my eye is the Mercedes EQS 580. It's hatch has an even larger cargo capacity that the Taycan hatch variants and might take pot holes with more aplomb than a Taycan. A web search doesn't reveal any annoying telematic faults that I could find.
Anybody have any words to the wise for me??
