208 mph in a Bentley Flying Spur (video)

    Holy fire and smoke Batman!
Autocar has a video of editor Andrew Frankel accelerating up to 208 mph in a Bentley Flying Spur - with 4 people onboard!

208 mph, that's as fast as an SLR isn't it? And in a 2.5 tonne limo - unbelievable...

If RC had one of these he wouldn't have had to send his family by plane, and he also would have got there a lot faster

Watch it here (in the menu on the right):
    200mph in a Bentley - four up

Re: 208 mph in a Bentley Flying Spur (video)

I got to drive a factory test car a few weeks back.

    Very nice.

    I want one!

    What's stopping you?
Get it and I'm sure everyone in here will support you by purchasing V1's and get new ones every year!

Yes, I read your posts when checking if the video had been posted before, nice pictures

I think you should get one Even though 208 mph is about 3 times faster than you can (legally) drive over there..

    Just do it!

Re: 208 mph in a Bentley Flying Spur (video)

it's just to say, you can! funny that it can go as quick as the SLR and it's no where near as aerodynamical

Re: 208 mph in a Bentley Flying Spur (video)

208 mph with 4 passangers and a curb weight of over 5400 lbs!
The driver kept checking the tire pressure. I wonder how they would hold up to continuous 200 mph driving.

I read the review in a print copy of Autocar from which this video sprang.

IIRC, the author said that after they all got out of the car at the end of the high-speed runs, the tires were cool to the touch!

I'm just wondering where you could drive continuously at 200 mph?

Re: 208 mph in a Bentley Flying Spur (video)

    Nardo, Papenburg, Dubai.

Overlooking Dubai, what would be the point of transporting 4 people at 200 mph around a closed circuit?

Nardo and Papenburg are not public highways. Might be fun for the driver, but not so for the 3 passengers?

Re: 208 mph in a Bentley Flying Spur (video)

The thrill, I suppose. If I see the one guy yawning in the picture it must have been a BIG thrill...

Re: 208 mph in a Bentley Flying Spur (video)

The sarcasm meter has gone off the scale...and its not even Fritz!

Seriously, there are no tyres that can support such heavy loads. The reason that Bentley has not limited the car is probably due to the fact that the car will run out of fuel in a few minutes at 200mph speeds and the time taken to refuel will have allowed the tyres to cool down and the driver to re-inflate the tyres. Repeated high speed runs are another thing.....

Seriously on the fuel issue? How long would a full tank of gas last at those kinda speeds in any car?

According to Jeremy Clarkson, in the London to Oslo drive in an SLR, the SLR will run out of fuel in 19 minutes at full speed (208 mph - 21 gallon fuel tank).
I imagine that a Bentley Flying Spur won't last much longer since it has a 20 gallon fuel tank and about the same gasmileage...

Re: 208 mph in a Bentley Flying Spur (video)

Andrew Frankel also wrote a feature for 4Car about his drive at Nardo:

Looks like you join the group...

If I remember correctly the info display on the Bentley showed more than 3 bars of pressure in the tires which make sense regarding speed and load. The tires are the exact same reason why Mercedes limits their AMG models to 300 kph, and only if you ask them for it!
