    Spare Tire in 2006?

The 2006 European option/price list shows option code 447: "Inflatable spare tyre" for every model Porsche 997 including coupe, cabriolet and C4. The price is 480 Euros. 2006 guide for the U.S. is expected in late August.

    Re: Spare Tire in 2006?

Would be nice if they be came available in USA.

I'm expecting some BS that impedes their availability. Allthat bragging about no need for a spare and the low weight of the car Porsche has been doing, might make it embarassing for them to offer a spare. IOW, people will become aware of the fact that the car does not come with a spare and might get disgusted. Porsche will probably just stay quiet about it and not sell the spare in the USA. The only reason a 997 spare EXISTS at all is because some countries REQUIRE cars to be sold with spares. NOT the good old USA of course.

    Re: Spare Tire in 2006?

Since we can't fit the flat tire in the car after we change it, they also need to provide a temporary roof mount rack kit to place the flat on.

No, reputable sources here at Rennteam indicate it will fit in the back seat, just put the front seat forward all the way and maneuver it back there; stick it in a bag first

    Re: Spare Tire in 2006?

The spare tire option for the 997 has been around for a while, and it is not pretty. The option is a space-saver tire that is in a bag that straps to one of the back seats with the seat belt.

Be careful what you ask for, Function does not always equate to form.

(oh, you wanted it stored in the trunk? All you said is that you wanted was a spare tire!)

    Re: Spare Tire in 2006?

Have a spare that works (997S coupe) for several months now, go to rennlist.com and do a search. Purchased at Sunset Porsche, talk to jeff in parts. Cost for entire kit $750 - $800 USD. As big as the rear tires are they do fit in the rear seat (first place tire in plastic bag or "boot"). Kit comes with jack which is featherweight (no it is not a standard item) PROS: (1) peace of mind during trips out of cell phone range, (2) Don't need to tow vehicle to service dept to replace/and or fix a flat (3)collapsable type tire takes up less room + fits turbo brakes (identical to the spare that comes standard on 911 2004 996C4S (4) tested on short runs and works in emergency situations (50 miles or less) with no problems. (No mess using the liquid stuff which costs $$ to replace after each use. CONS:(1) Weight (about 30 LBS) (2) Takes precious trunk space away (3)Some say this is overkill and the liquid stuff works well (4) The odds of getting a flat (might never need it) don't justify the extra weight and loss of cargo space and (5) Must be secured in trunk (easy task using bungie cords) and (6) additional cost. Personally, I am glad I purchased it but carry it only on long trips especially remote ones where my cell phone's signal is non existent. Mounted properly in front trunk the extra weight does not seem to adversely affect handling as it is "identical" to the one currently provided as a standard option on 2004 996C4S'S. The jack is a "must have" if your planning on changing your oil or working under car (provided you have back-up support of course). Hope this helps. Cheers.

    Re: Spare Tire in 2006?

Grady I don't know if I would purchase this...but would it be possible for you the post some pics of the spare and the jack, and maybe how you secured it in your trunk?

I won't believe it has "been around" until I have the part number. Do you or does anyone have the part number for the item pictured?

    Re: Got Part Number?

Here are the part numbers I kept from a previous post about this. Based on the P/N, it doesn't seem like this is specific to the 997 though.

    P/N 996-362-020-02 Emergency Tire $475.66
    P/N 996-722-101-00 Wheel Insert $30.68
    P/N 996-721-211-00 Scissors Jack $118.74
    P/N 999-571-074-30 Mounting Bolt $5.54
    P/N 999-361-521-00 Tire Boot $2.17
    P/N 996-361-411-00 Belt $12.44

    Re: Got Part Number?

someday rufnflats will evolve and we wont have this issue anymore.... hhhhaaaa it's so much fun to dream!

But these numbers make me wonder. Should be "997" prefix since 997 tires and wheels are very different. The 997s are an inch larger in diameter. So why would a 997 tire have a 996 number? yes, the above tire and PN may work but it's probably NOT the part number for this tire pictured below. Below is an actual 997 spare apparently not avail in USA.

    Re: Spare Tire in 2006?

Mcdelaug if you go to rennlist.com and do a search (type spare tire) you should have all the pictures I posted a few months ago. Keep in mind the spare tire option listed for european 2006 models might actually be different and have a part number starting with 997-. Hopefully they have lightened up and shrunk the beast! It fits standing up in the front trunk simply secured with bungie cords or tie-down straps. Actually securing the thing is very easy so its a quick and simple procedure taking the tire or leaving it behind (which I do 80% of the time). Trunk space is a big issue for me most of the time and only haul the thing on long weekend excursions away from civilization. If the spare tire offered in 2006 is 1/2 the weight and 2/3rds the size, I say go for it, otherwise don't bother unless its a serious concern of yours.

    Re: Spare Tire in 2006?

OK, I will post these photos to get a better perspective of the offered spare currently available. Someone should look into whether it is the same offered in Europe for 2006 model year (might have improved?). All photos are self explanatory but keep in mind that the "kit" (photo of jack, plastic bag, gloves, etc.) does NOT come with a lug wrench to remove bolts. The one pictured attached to the socKet I purchased at griotsgarage.com but is commonly available at most auto supply shops. Do I recommend it? Only if you get a flat..............Ok that wasn't funny. Seriously, check out the 2006 option available in Europe FIRST, then, if its the same, and your a worry wart like me, yes. Otherwise, take your chances and pass on it and keep your fingers crossed that the liquid stuff will do its thing or better yet, never have to know. Ciao.

    Re: Spare Tire in 2006?

Looks like only 1 photo at a time.

    Re: Spare Tire in 2006?

    Next one.

    Re: Spare Tire in 2006?

    Final photo.

    Re: Got Part Number?

TOONER, IF THE RUN FLATS HANDLE ANYWHERE NEAR THE MICHELIN PILOT SPORTS YOU GOT A DEAL! CHEERS!

    Re: Spare Tire in 2006?

    Thanks for the pics gradyex.

I have a cd changer in the trunk, will that interfere with the spare tire?

    Re: Spare Tire in 2006?

No, not at all. I do not have that option (probably the only one) but according to my dealer I was told that it would definitly clear the top of the tire if I decieded to go for it down the road.

    Re: Spare Tire in 2006?

Here is another angle and I can still open the left compartment and bring it down far enough to access the cd cartridge (both top and bottom) . Hope this helps, but look into any improvements for 06 first. My guess is that it is the same because a regular "doughnut type" tire may have clearance issues with the "s" turbo style brakes. If youv'e got a standard Carerra I'm sure a smaller, lighter tire would work. FYI, as I posted before, I personally tested the tire for several miles both front and back and actually fit the rear tire in the back seat securely. Granted it wasn't fun with 2 back surgeries for a heriated disc but if I can do it so can you.

    Re: Spare Tire in 2006?

Thanks for all the pix gradyex; very helpful and appreciated. Good solution to a nagging problem.

When you're not carrying the tire, perhaps y'all know this, but keep the jack and lug wrench on board and carry a DIY plug kit. I'd use THAT insted of the goop. Use the DIY plug for a few weeks (no excessive speeding) until you can get a proper repair.

    Re: Spare Tire in 2006?

    Thank you Gradyex! Great Job...

Time to put orders in gents!

@gradyex... yeah I wish they would! [runflats]

    Re: Spare Tire in 2006?

Gradyex thanks for being so kind to post all those photos. I think that I will take my chances without the tire for now.

    Re: Spare Tire in 2006?

MMD, sounds like a great idea. Any recomendations on where to get a good plug kit or any will do? Instructions should be pretty straight forward. Sure beats calling a tow truck if the liquid fails. The head tech at my dealership told me that "I would be surprised how well the liquid in the bottle works". But what a mess afterward, especially if you plan on saving the tire with a plug/patch. Tooner, you live so close to me, just borrow mine and pocket the cash for the techart 20's you like so much! LOL! Mcdelaug, no problem, hope I made the decision much easier for you. Cheers.

LOL... yeah I know man... the Techarts was supposed to go on my wife's 987S...

but after the Porsche concourses that I've been to and viewing the car while riding on a different one has made me appreciate the stock look a lot. I don't think I'm changing anything on my 997 except maybe getting to rims like yours...

Your neighborhood parts supply will sell those kits. Get the delux kit with the "T" handle plug inserter, because it's hard on your hands to jamb those plugs in. I would be hesitant to drive on the tire with the nail still in there, therefore I wouldn't use the goo. Driving with the nail in place can cause more damage to the tire. Remember Porsche considers the tire trash if it gets punctured (unsafe at sustained Autobahn speeds of 130+ mph) so the can o' goo procedure can send the tire to hell as far as Porsche is concerned.

    Re: Spare Tire in 2006?

Smart move Tooner, I agree. Thanks MMD will check it out. I would rather leave the nail in (if its not flat) than shoot that goo in the tire and remove the nail...just take my chances. The goo makes a mess out of everything but since Porsche figures your replacing it they could care less. FYI, I had 2 nails patched on my 2002 M3 and plugged them with no problems ( as long as they are not too close to the sidewall). Have a fun day driving your cars today guys!

    Re: Spare Tire in 2006?

Senior Gradyex... Who does your tires

i just found a nail stuck on my rear passenger side but no pressure loss...

    Re: Spare Tire in 2006?

With all you guys with nails in your tires and not loosing air it is possible (and probable) that the nail has not penetrated the air chamber. Best bet is to pull the nail out part way and if you don't hear or feel air rushing out you don't have a flat and you can remove the nail. If you do hear the air push the nail back in and get the tire repaired. By driving any length of time on the nail you may very well force the nail into the air chamber.

    Re: Spare Tire in 2006?

Tooner how close is the nail to the sidewall? If its not too close take it to your dealer (you can borrow my spare if you prefer just to take the tire in) and see if they will fix it. Some dealers play hardball and will tell you to purchase a new one as the tire will no longer be speed rated (Porsches policy) buy many will fix it using plug/patch method. Someone else can shed some light on this as I remember one method being better than the another? If you track your car, well, that might be an issue and you should discuss it further with the service rep. If you take it to a tire repair shop (Mark Morris, Toscalito, etc) make sure they don't damage the 19" rims and have the proper equipment to remove it and do a high speed balance without causing any damage. Good luck.
