Re: Which tyres for 987 Boxster???

    Just back from my tyre-man
He said:(he drive porsche since many years)
Michelin Pilot Sport PS2: dramatic on wet.Ok for duration
Pirelli: good grip.a lot of noise
Continental :less grip tha Pirelli e more silent
    Bridgestone: n* 1 till S-03

Re: Which tyres for 987 Boxster???

Thanks! What do you mean by 'dramatic'? I had read somewhere that the Michelins weren't so good in the wet, being a little more succeptable to aquaplaning.

Re: Which tyres for 987 Boxster???

he told me that on the wet it's better stay calm

Re: Which tyres for 987 Boxster???

If he means the Italian version of calm then we brits can drive like hooligans on Michelins

Bridgestones on my 2.7 delivered 3 weeks ago & though a little noisy no other complaints (RE050)

Re: Which tyres for 987 Boxster???

My Continental SportContact 2 delivered with my 987S are so so. They seem to lose grip sooner than the PilotSports I had on my 986 but that might be a good thing. The PilotSport just keep griping griping and then... there you go.

The SportContact's are also noisier when pushing them hard. I don't think I ever heard the Michelins squeak but the Continentals let you know they are burning rubber.

Re: Which tyres for 987 Boxster???

I recently replaced my Bridgestone S-02A's with Bridgestone S-03's. I heard good things about the Michelins but they were so much more money and I had no complaints with the Bridgestones. On the other hand, I never drove a Boxster with any other tires so I had no way to judge how good or bad the Bridgestone's were.

Re: Which tyres for 987 Boxster???

I've been pretty happy with the Michelin Pilot Sports on my 987, although I haven't been out in any sustantial rain yet to test the aquaplaning theory - strangely for England we haven't had much rain recently - before anyone takes a poke at our weather!

On pricing I had a quote from Micheldever Tyres for a full set (18" wheels) of Pilots at about Pounds800 (from memory it was Pounds440 rears, Pounds360 fronts) including balance, tracking etc.

Re: Which tyres for 987 Boxster???

Thanks for that price CharlesL. Now that OPCs have canned the tyre insurance....

Re: Which tyres for 987 Boxster???

I have had Michelins for 4+months now

    - excellent grip in dry
    - snappy in the wet. not sure if its just the handling of the car or the tyres. but it grips and grips up to a point and the back will snap around with further throttle. fun, but scarry
    - wears ok with noraml spirited driving. doubt they'll last onthe track tho.

    - very very f*** expensive!! I puctured my rear 265/18" this week and it costed me about US600+ to replace.
    Ouch.... damn that nail!!

    600$ ??????????????????????????????? WHAT?
    How can that be?
Replacement is...what...50-70 bucks max, and a new wheel is around 300-350$
How come it got so expensive? Are tires that expensive in the US?

Re: Which tyres for 987 Boxster???

Derder, check this (British) site for prices.
    http://www.mytyres.co.uk

Michelin Pilot Sport N1 (Porsche approved) size 265/35-18 ZR N will run you just under 200Pounds (pounds sterling), so if you paid 600 USD for the same tire...you may wanna consider changing supplier.

Re: Which tyres for 987 Boxster???

Dr Phil, tyres are substantially more expensive here than in the States or UK. Just like the cars that use them as well really.

Pretty strange since we have some of the highest taxes on cars (180% + VAT) in Denmark. The tire prices seem ok here.
Maybe it's not the merchandize.-..but the darn long boattrip that makes everything so darn expensive down under?
I mean, it's faster to go to Jupiter!

Re: Which tyres for 987 Boxster???

even our income tax is 46.5%

hell! we give half of what we earn to the government and they still bl**dy charge us additional tax (10%) for everything we buy/eat.

for what I paid for my boxster, I could've got a demo 911S in the states.

they say Melbourne's the most livable city..... yeah, if u dont drive a Porsche!

Actually our income tax is progressive, and the highest tax rate is 47%, plus another 1.5% to cover our country's health program. But even then, we have to buy private health insurance if we earn over a certain dollar a year (and I think all Porsche driver in this country would ) or you have to pay an additional 1% tax. So more than half our incremental income goes back to the govt for relatively high income earners (ie. P-car owners).

Dr. Phil, I think Asian countries like Singapore and Malaysia pay a lot more tax than you do on their Porsches. I think it is 300%!

Anyway, as derder said, Melb is the best city to live in. I wouldn't trade it for anywhere else. Just need to find more ways to make more money!

    He that's Zürich! Cheers mate!

Re: Which tyres for 987 Boxster???

    Ok, how's this:
Our taxes start at about 40% and end at about 70% for the highest income bracket. (In theory, cause most hi-incomers also have good accountants)
Add to that a 180% car tax (plus a "green tax" to even use the car - usually from 200$ to around 1000$, 25% VAT and tax on 95% of what we buy. Even our water i taxed. I pay around 2500 USD a year in taxes for my water alone.
Our gasoline costs around 10kr a litre, which roughly translates into 1,5$ pr liter or appr. 6$ a gallon (a gallon being 4 litres).

Then add house taxes (a house at around 1mio $ will cost appr. 15.000 USD a year in taxes alone. Then comes personal housing tax on top.)
Garbage, cigarettes, alcohol, food, medicine etc etc etc etc...tax, tax, tax.

Only low taxes we have are the ones on companies.

Btw...last year I handed over a check to the Danish Customs: appr. 90,000USD....for the taxes on my Boxey alone.

    So Aussie-pussies: Whipe your tears

    Dr. Phil, Dr. Phil!

If you think that you can get away with putting 70 buck tires on a Boxster, then I begin to understand how you came to be complaining about the traction/handling of your car on (non-approved) Falken winter tires last spring!

    I believe you misread my post. I'm talking Dunlop SP9090 N, 265/35-18.
Don't think it's fair to compare those to Falken.
Besides, the Falken weren't 70$-tires as you so claim. They cost 100$ a pop less than equivalent Goodyears and Michelins.
The 70$ I talk about is the CHANGING of tires, meaning the mechanic's work. Not the tire itself.

Dont even think it's possible to buy 70$ tires for a Porsche

Ok you win. But seriously though, is income really high in Denmark? Relative to the US, Australian professionals are paid maybe 30% less. But if you are a labourer or work in non-professional jobs, it is better to be in Australia than the States.

Re: Which tyres for 987 Boxster???

So what do you guys think about run flats?

Re: Which tyres for 987 Boxster???

I don't think you can get run-flats that fit, can you?
Even if you could I don't think they'd be very good - everyone seems to hate what they do to the ride on BMWs.

Re: Which tyres for 987 Boxster???

They would be very helpful in the sort of terrain I drive around (lots of potholes). I would be more comfortable with a spare tire than the kit provided with the 987; in case of bent rim, the kit is not going to do anything for me... a run flat would at least get me home...

Sounds like you would be better of with a 4 x 4 than a sports car if the roads are that bad where you live.
