    Re: 2022 992 Safari Model

I saw my first limited edition model in the US in the wild.  Kudos to those who got one and are getting it dirty (sans the ridiculous roof appendages), but to me, this encapsulates everything wrong with the limited editions.

    911 Dakar.jpg

(This was a Costco parking lot, so I wasn't even the only 911.)

    Re: 2022 992 Safari Model

The roof rack and the 4 spotlights are the coolest part!! This car is so unique. There was nothing else like it ever.

Found this in my dealership today.

PS 42 degrees in Sydney today. Not a lot of aircon delete ticked on Porsche deliveries Down Under.

    Re: 2022 992 Safari Model

Is Santa being good to you this year?

    Re: 2022 992 Safari Model

Hopefully yes but nothing involving 4 wheels under the Christmas tree!

Am close to ordering a new Macan S. The last of the petrol versions. I believe North American dealers have persuaded Porsche to keep building the petrol version for a bit longer but in Australia new regulations requiring enhanced electronics to protect pedestrians come into effect mid 2024 and the existing Macan range is not compliant. Porsche will not spend the $$ to upgrade the electronics on a model they are phasing out. Same applies to the 718 from mid next year I am told.

Have thought about ordering the EV Macan (early 2025 delivery??) but for me it is than just a city driver and the distances in Australia mean that it is not the right car at the right time. I love my current Macan S so i guess the right thing to do is to buy another and then what happens to EVs, new solid state batteries and biofuels over the next few years.

    Re: 2022 992 Safari Model

See what I posted on the EV OT thread about Volkswagen moving EV development and production to China.  That’s just the start and it’s quite troubling for the EU and US.

    Re: 2022 992 Safari Model

Fun fact: Safari is handwritten on the turbos.

    Re: 2022 992 Safari Model

So the day has arrived. Werksabholung. European delivery.

Day didn't quite started good. The taxi driver dropped me off at Werk1, well that was the old delivery centre, but Porsche got a new one up the hill now so the lovely Porsche security guard called me a shuttle to get me to the proper place.

That brings me to another point, last few times there was a Porsche driver to do pick up at airport to hotel and then hotel to Zuffenhausen, now they gave me 2 tax vouchers to be used instead. The airport taxi guy, once he saw the voucher, is like grumbling and said Porsche is rich, why can't they send driver, not too happy with me giving him a voucher. The hotel taxi driver of course drop me off at the wrong spot also.

Anyways, the new centre is next to the used car dealership, with lots of colourful Porsches. Eye candies for sure!

    1708699408362IMG_6035.JPG

Then here is the second snag, my delivery specialist seems to have lost the remote for the automatic car cover, took him quite a while to find it and do his thing.

    1708699428505IMG_6038.JPG1708699444622IMG_6041.JPGIMG_6042.JPGIMG_6044.JPG

Pity didn't get PTS, but at least I got in a few customized details. Oh, and the white wheels are the factory winter set loaners, my original set will be fitted after before shipping.

    IMG_6058.JPGIMG_6059.JPG

Added painted vents to add some colour to the inside.

    IMG_6061.JPG

And first time trying this option, Porsche Design clock.

    IMG_6062.JPG

So at this point, another snag. Another specialist, came by, telling me some bad news. My car may or may not be part of a group of cars that has windows improperly installed, and if it is, I cannot drive it out of there. They are going to move the car to the workshop and inspect, so booted me out of the delivery centre and sent me off to factory tour and lunch.

They offered me a loaner car if needed, and I was like, well I don't mind if they send over a 918, or the new Macan EV. (I will ge to that in a bit). No answer from her lol.

And one last 'present' from Porsche

    IMG_6063.JPG

Colour Sample of ALL the PTS colours.

Of I go to the factory tour. While I had done that many times, I have never been to the Taycan factory. I have my younger son with me for this trip and he enjoyed the tour very much. Took my oldest here a few years ago, so it's his brother's turn.

718s are off the Zuffenhausen line, just 911s now, they are/will be in the process of refitting to support building normal cars, hybrids and electric on that line.

Taycan factory is next, it's a lot bigger, roomier and more, well, empty. Empty as in empty space, the line is fully packed. But it feels more modern, it should as it's the much newer factory. At the conclusion, my son remarked, there is something odd about the Taycan line, his exact word, there is no soul, soulless.

I didn't teach him that. While soulless is a term I used before to describe the Taycan, I never talked about that with him. I asked him to explain over lunch, and he was like, the 911, well the sports car line is more intimate, he sees lots of people working, with passion. Like, they love what they are doing. The Taycan line, while also packed with workers, they are more spaced out with roomier stations, but also seem, robotic, it's just a job for those.

Weird take form a 15 yr old, but he isn't wrong. Mostly. I am sure those workers on the Taycan line also worked with a passion also, I mean, they all work for Porsche. Interesting nevertheless.

The museum visit is another highlight for him since he has never been there, he was drawn to the 928, saying that's a nice Porsche, and didn't believe me that particular GTS example is 30 yrs old, he is like outside looks like a modern car but the interior is well, old haha. Next up is the Porsche GT1-98 Straßenversion. I explained the whole history of that car to him and he was like, dad, can we get one? 😂 and the last car he got excited over was the 918 Safety Car. He was like, that's a 918? And they used that as a Safety Car? And I proceed to tell him yes, it is. When I raced in Germany in the Sport Cup it was my Safety Car for the series. It still has the Racing Experience branding on the rear wing.

Tomorrow we will either head to Mercedes Museum or go farther out and visit Hockenheim and Technik Museum. TBD

And then about the Macan EV. There was a lovely PTS one at the delivery centre, for Porsche's own use.

After seeing it in real life, I am sort of liking it. Trunk is slightly smaller than the current one but inside 'seems' roomier. But I still think the rear 3/4 view of the car is still a bit awkward.

    Re: 2022 992 Safari Model

Great color choice for the Dakar.  Why does Porsche continue to have these niggling issues?

    Re: 2022 992 Safari Model

Got the car back after all. today was at Mercedes Museum, forgot it's Saturday there is a football match, so traffic wasn't the greatest.  Tomorrow we go to Hockenheim and Technik Museum.

They were unable to tell me if my car is part of the ECU hold so it may or may not be held at the port when it comes home. Fingers crossed.

Really like the colour choice. And the “go anywhere”. Heard from my buddy that it is a lot of fun to drive, he prefers it to some pricier alternatives in his garage.

    Re: 2022 992 Safari Model

Was to late to order a Dakar, but drove it for a few days on ice! Great car for drifting on ice. Porsche had app 6-10 pre-production cars for us.

Plus one from my side. The color is nice and it really do not need the historic rally paint.

I had a few opportunities to drive one, but not on the surface I wanted. This would be such a car if you had a big farm somewhere.

    Enjoy the car Smiley

    Re: 2022 992 Safari Model

Congrats Nick! It's such a cool car, and the Macan is not bad either. I love the posts of anyone here sharing these moments with family. It's what it's all about.

But that PTS swatch fan, that's the kind of stuff I'd love to have at my desk, reference it when someone's picking paint colors for a new house indecision

    Re: 2022 992 Safari Model

Dakar is a polarizing product from Porsche. For some, they simply just don't get the idea. But for those that gets it, they LOVE it.

About 20 or so 918 owners I know already had theirs, I am like the last one to take delivery. Every single one of them absolutely love the car, Some have taken it off road (they have easy access to sand/dirt track) and having a blast doing it, while others only use it in town and it works perfectly also.

After spending some time with it in Germany, while short, I am impressed with the product. I purposely raised it to the highest setting on the Autobahn to see how good it drives, and it was wonderful! Compliant, and very stable on highway corners with minimal body roll. At standard setting at up to 240km/hr (got winter tires on so that's the max I can go), it feels just as stable as any other Porsche I have driven on the Autobahn. May I even say more comfortable even. Granted 2 of those had buckets and only 1 has sofa seats, but with the raised ride height of the Dakar, it's easier to get in and out. (Yes I am getting old).

It's too bad I only have a short trip and timing is wrong to head to Nordschleife or even some of the passes, on well.

The Porsche square trunk still fits in the front, and we stuff a standard check in size Rimowa in the back together with 2 duffle bags and 2 backpacks with room to spare. More than good enough for 2 guys on a long trip. But then again I did survive with antlers guy in the 918 for long ones, so, haha.

The look is unique with that bespoke fixed wing, and the plastic fender extensions, not to mention the stainless steel plates front and rear, and it's sharp with that new shade green colour.

And now it's the hard wait of 6-8 weeks shipping time before it will come home.

Oh one more ting, it is my first time driving the 3.0L twin turbo engine, it sounds, well completely different than the bigger turbo S motor. at low rpm and small throttle, aka putting around town, it sounds like it is labouring, but ion reality it isn't, it pulls immediately and throttle response is excellent, sort of surprised me a bit. That 485hp or some is plenty enough, even on the Autobahn, I am up to speed very quickly even without going over 4000rpm which is what Porsche wanted me to stay under for the first 1000km.

Oh yeah, it's still awkward to drive the fat 992 body. Less so than the GT3RS but doesn't mean it's decent.  I still feels like I am driving a Panamera and the Panamera is actually easier to drive with 4WS. Going underground parking garage is a careful and slow process of checking clearance, but at least with the raised ride height I don't have to worry about curbs. 992s are still a fat pig.

    Re: 2022 992 Safari Model

Yeah, that GTS 3.0 motor is potent.  I ran against a 991.2 GTS at the track on Saturday and it was faster than my GT3 on the straights (turbos really help at altitude).

    Re: 2022 992 Safari Model

To all Dakar owners, which tires did you order or which tires does it come with as standard? I understand there is a choice of all-terrain (The default choice ), all-weather, summer and winter tires.

    Re: 2022 992 Safari Model

I believe 95% of the orders opt for the A/T tires. The rest summer, which is Pirelli PZero.

Porsche has factory winters for that sizing. Also from Pirelli, PZero Winter.

Don't believe there is a all-weather tire option however.

One strange thing about the Pirelli Scorpion A/T tires on the Dakar, the whole range of that model is 3 peak mountain winter rated, except the 2 sizes for Dakar. That means Porsche has custom compounds.

Exactly.  My dealer thought the A/T tires were going to be all season version, but Porsche had other ideas.  I also have the PZero WInter wheel and tire set (black spokes for them, too).  Haven't had enough snow this winter to try them out Smiley

That 3.0L GTS engine is a thing of beauty, no wonder Porsche used the GTS as the base and not the turbo.

Driving the Dakar, I do not have a 'I need more power' moment.
