    My friend wants a 2014 Rs5. I told him it's old and shitty. What else should he buy?

    He's in Asia. The RS5 will cost him about $90K. It's a 2014. I told him it's an old, shitty, boring, uncool car. It has an old interior and the new S5 is coming out soon with the virtual cockpit, turbo, and probably similar performance anyway.

    I don't really follow cars in this segment. He wants something sports and cool in the same price range. Assume $90K there buys you $50K in the US/Europe.

    He wants something cool. 911 isn't an option because the backseats suck.

    Any idea?

    There are not many options I'm afraid, even more so if he needs back seats: Audi RS5, BMW M3 (e92) and Mercedes C63AMG (old one) are the obvious choices. 

    Christian had a C63 AMG coupe. From what he wrote at the time, it looked like a very good & cool car.

    I recommend an S5 because the performance will probably be about the same (possibly even better considering it's a generation newer), has the new virtual cockpit and more modern design, and I think an RS5 is just as boring as an S5, so why pay a premium for an older, worse car?

    If you're just going to get a meh car, why pay a premium for a slightly less but still meh car? Couldn't care less about NA vs Turbo since neither is anything to write home about these days. If I'm not mistaken, the only 4.2l V8 is similar to the one from the original Audi R8, and though it's improved and that wasn't a bad engine by any means, it also suffered from things like carbon build up. That general engine is just old.

    What about BMW M2?

    RS5 has a nice motor but the car is quite heavy and doesn't utilize it as well as it could.  That said, if he wants an RS5, let him get it.  Everyone has their own priorities and needs to get what makes THEM happy, you YOU.

    Well, I know for a fact he's going to get bored with it. He's always wanted an exotic and I've let him drive mine before, but he can't afford one in China because they are like 2x as much as the US. He's going to spend $90K on a used 2014 RS5 hoping it's sweet when I already know that any cool factor it has is going to wear off in like a few months.

    The RS5 is not a substitute for a Huracan or R8 or something like that. It's just an slightly aggressive normal car that's really not even that fast these days.

    I want him to get a cheap Honda or something like that and just wait for cooler cars to come down in price or something. Why lose money depreciating a en expensive meh car instead of saving and waiting for a cool one to get into your price range?

    I'm pretty sure he's going to lose like 15-20K on this car within a year since it's just going to get older and the next gen is coming out soon.

    I've just suggested he wait for the RS3 -- 400 hp, 350 lbft, lighter/smaller than the RS5, updated interior with virtual cockpit, semi-autonomous driving up to 40mph from shit traffic in China, and since it's only a 2.5L engine, taxes will be lower and hence a lower price.

    Other than the sound of the NA V8 (which will be so so in a coupe compared to the R8), the new RS3 should be an all around better car with better performance too.

    The new RS3 is a nice choice. Had the chance to drive one for half an hour and it feels powerful as hell and sounds very nice (for a turbo). Performance is amazing for such a small looking car, it has been recently reviewed at 3.7 sec. from 0-100 kph and 13.0 seconds from 0-200 kph, which is quite impressive for such a car in this price range.

    The new M2 is nice but waiting time is extreme (not sure about China) in Germany, it is sold out for almost 18 months or so. Some cars are sold over here at a premium, usually they go for 75k EUR or so. Not exactly a bargain.

    Another option, if he is not totally committed to EU origin, is the Lexus RC F ( which is not, as rumoured, named after a famous forum moderator).  I have driven the sedan with this V8 - IMO it is at least as good as Audi's V8.  Interior is a matter of taste but Lexus interiors are often optimized for Asian owners, not for EU where they will never sell in numbers.

    Of course brands matter. In Germany, nobody would consider a Japanese car to be cool (unless it is an old NSX/Datsun 240Z or a Nissan GT-R maybe). No Hyundai, Dacia, Opel, Smart, Skoda, etc. would be considered cool over here either, so brand matters. Often!

    I am going to test drive an M6 in a few days as I've been offered the opportunity but I expect the M6 to be boring, even if fast. We will see I guess.

    He got bored with the RS5 after a month only? Wow.

    How about a C63 AMG Coupe S then? 

    He can't get supercar fun with a very limited budget, just not possible.

    I would have chosen the RS3 anyway...or the new TT RS.

    I had a look at the new TT RS yesterday . It is a very impressive car !  Just a little bit small to me, but otherwise it would be on top of my fun DD cars  and the performance for the money is fantastic . 

    The C63 AMG would also be on my list but only  if in AWD .
