    SL55amg vs 997s?

As I was leaving the parking lot, I noticed a silver SL55amg parked nearby. I'm curious how it stacks against the 997s. How does the 997s with a smaller engine and less HP compare?

Is it better on the track than the SL55 with regards to handling and braking?

Has anyone driven the SL55 can comment the difference between the two?

    Re: SL55amg vs 997s?

sorry to say it will blow a 997S away....one reason its automatic so no room for error for driver....second it has much more power than a 997S... my friend raced a SL55 on highway with his 996TT and he could not pass the benz....

    Re: SL55amg vs 997s?

Not really a fair comparison IMHO - SL55 is more expensive by a factor of $50K base US --- for $125K, compare it to a 911 Turbo to which I say the choice is fairly easy - Turbo over a SL55 without hesitation

Your buddy must have given up too early. The Benz is limited to 155mph.

    Re: SL55amg vs 997s?

Let's just say that when I pull up to a stoplight alongside an SL55, I just act like I'm busy playing with my radio or sport chrono or something. I wouldn't stand a chance of out accelerating this car.

I'll just wait for the 997 turbo.

    Re: SL55amg vs 997s?

i had the sl55 while i have my 997 S cab, the SL would kill the 911 in a straight line, but around turns i'm afraid it would lose so sadly

    Re: SL55amg vs 997s?

Road & Track got a 997S thru the 1/4 mile in 12.3 while an SL65 did it in 12.0. What does an SL55 do the 1/4 in? The 997S and the SL55 have almost identical pounds per horse. Why should one be much quicker?

    Re: SL55amg vs 997s?

on top speeds you feel it, trust me

So simple : start before the light turns green.
    No mercy for faster cars.
It's the driver, not the car, who kills !

    Re: SL55amg vs 997s?

Alright, then I do have a bit of amg envy. Isn't the sl55 very heavy, almost 1000lbs heavier then the 997s? So on turns, cornering, etc the 997s has an advantage.

I know the p car will lose on a straightline because of the torque and hp against the sl55.

But the regular SL500 does not stand a change against the 997s right?!?

Correct the SL500 is a pansy!

    Re: SL55amg vs 997s?

    997S 3131 lbs/355 hp = 8.81 lbs/hp
    SL55 4280 lbs/493 hp = 8.68 lbs/hp
You would only have to lighten the 997S by 50 lbs to make the pounds per horsepower identical. A gal driving the Porsche against a man driving the Benz would make it even. If the SL55 is much quicker, MB must be fibbing about the horse count. Maybe they rate their cars in Clydesdales instead of trotters.

Not a great deal in it ,, is there ..

Down to driver surely..and well I would have a go..

    Re: SL55amg vs 997s?

The torque of the SL55 motor just completely overwhelms
any 997. Its also a much more comfortable car for a long trip.

Take your choice, incredible driver interaction with the Porsche in the curves, or devastating straight line acceleration with the SL55.

    Alls it takes is money!

    Re: SL55amg vs 997s?

    The 2006 SL55 AMG
    MSRP $125,775* ..

Thats the right one , my spec above is for the SLK..

    throt..

Very true. The SL 55's motor is fantastic and produces massive amounts of torque all through the rev range.

Although the performance of these two cars may seem similar on paper, in the real world they are totally different.

If I were looking for a sporty grand touring car, I would take the Benz in a heartbeat. Personally, I feel it's also a really stylish and classy car. For the pure thrill of performance driving, though, the 997s wins hands down. It's a true sportscar.

haha are you kidding me? Either your friend didn't race a SL55 (it might've been a SL65) or your friend can't drive worth anything...The Turbo would eat the Sl55 AMG in a straight line on a track anywhere...I love the 996 Turbo

    Re: SL55amg vs 997s?

Not true the SL can easily keep up with a turbo, expecially when already running at highway speeds. You kick down the gas pedal and it just scoots, no drama.

that 55 was already quick on high speed acceleration, w/o the limiter(if you ordered your car w/o one, the 155mph/250kph limiter) the SL from 180kph+ vs a turbo it would be very similar. from 0-100 the turbo eats the SL

here are pics comparing my old 55 to my new 65

    Re: SL55amg vs 997s?

I dont know what i would pick, two different cars, What i love about 55 engine is that they are easy to mod, it can be moded up to 600hp, i dont know what i would pick, i really love both cars, but SL is one sexy car!

    Re: SL55amg vs 997s?

Buy yourself a 911 Turbo, leave the Mercedes to your wife/mistress/girlfriend, they're a better match for it

    Re: SL55amg vs 997s?

Here is a partial list of ring times for various cars by different drivers/test. The SL55 is a few ticks behind our beloved 997s.

So next time you see an SL55 at the light, just give them this printout

Why is the corvette C6 ahead of the 997? That couldn't be possible!

    Re: SL55amg vs 997s?

Porker, becuase thats one of those GM factory claimed lap times... in the SportAuto Supertest however, the C6 with its 400HP and with the optional Z-51 sport chasis managed a 8:15 lap time... likely a couple of seconds faster than the 997 but this has standard suspensions and only 325HP. The C6's 8:15 lap was 10 seconds slower than what the -20mm sport chasis 997S and with 50HP less did in the SportAuto Supertest.

    Re: SL55amg vs 997s?

two different cars. Why buy an SL if you can have a convertible porsche (which is the case with EVERY SL). The sl's are a nice passenger car....nice to ride in *you aren't driving an SL.. you are pointing it in a direction and you ride along with it* porsche's are the same, you actually work to drive them and you are rewarded. Moreover, SL55AMG is an automatic... it isn't sporty it's just fast in a straight line (which is cool).. however, it's not as fun to drive, it's like an AMERICAN cadillac.

    Killer,

You stole my thunder. Comparing an auto tranny car (SL55AMG) to a manual (997S or 996TT) is apples and oranges. Not that I'm denigrating the Merc. If I wanted a fast and slick looking Grand Touring type car without need for a manual tranny, I'd do what Mike S has done: Get the SL65AMG.

If my driving/regional topography was relatively straight-line (like in Chicago/Palm Beach/Dallas, etc), I'd prob opt for 55 for its straight-line abilities; fun exhaust note; excellent steering feel (better than an M3's and about 90% as sharp as a P's); and no turbo lag unlike 996TTS....but if I lived in coastal CA, 997S/996TTS wins the day for its fun in the curves. I'd note that the 300 lb heavier 55 beats the new M5 in N-ring times, despite BMW's 3 yr delay in coming up w/this new M5...and the 55 beats the 1000lb lighter 360's N-ring time....so let's not underestimate the 55's abilities in the curves as well.....
