    Re: OFFICIAL: New Panamera (2016)

    Herbaliser:

It's pity that the Panamera Turbo S will be a hybrid. A showcase for a bridging technology that won't be around for long. The Panamera has never got the engine it deserved. The 4.8 V8 TT was nothing special both in terms of power and character, the new 4.0 won't give us more than 550 hp which is so 2000's. As much as I praise the chassis engineers at Porsche, the engine guys have been a huge disappointment for the last decade or so.

I actually think a even more pumped up petrol only engine would get obsolete quicker than a hybrid equivalent. Specifically with this category of vehicle that just gets old either way and will not be a collectors car. The typical Panamera owner will probably buy the car, own it for 1-3 years and then move on to the next generation. During this period of time the hybrid will make a lot of sense in todays society. If you live in a city and commute in traffic to work with low average speed between business meetings you can do this in an environmental friendly way on electricity alone and with all the creature comfort, semi-autonomous driving, etc. On longer commutes and on those days when the Panamera owner is up for some more spirited driving from A to B, then that could be achieved as well with some decent exhaust note, more than enough performance, convenience and flexibility with the gas tank on board, etc. (and the germans will be able to outrun most cars on the Autobahn pacing at 310kph). This is probably how the average Panamera customer will use the car. It's also some kind of statement being able to run on electricity only in this type of vehicle and I'm sure that will fit the bill very well for many potential buyers. For those really spirited drives, the Panamera will stay in the garage and the keys to something lighter and more fun will be selected for the weekend joyride or the day on track. Either that be Porsche GTx car or something else from another brand.

I at least think the hybrid Panamera Turbo S is the better move than a bigger pumped up V8 that won't add much more than to shave off a few tenths for the 0-100 speed and a bit increased top speed. Added weight of the hybrid tech will of course be noticable in the corners, but it will still perform better than most of the competition and the average owner will probably pay 300kg of weight penalty for the other upsides that the hybrid provide.

    Re: OFFICIAL: New Panamera (2016)

    Whoopsy:

Yup, if they keep the Turbo engine from the Panamera Turbo, rated at 550HP, add in the electric motor from the Panamera 4 Hybrid which is rated at 136HP, the Panamera Turbo S will be close to 700HP, 686HP to be exact, a real monster!

    Not officially confirmed Smiley

I was told it is coming in another year, so I guess expect announcement sometime in the fall 2017, after the GT2RS announcement which will come summer 2017. I guess it will have time to make it state side as a 2018 model towards the end of 2017.

In addition, with the hybrid drivetrain, it will get congestion charges waived in countries that have them and gets to go on HOV lanes for countries that allow them. This part of a hybrid car gets overlooked quite often.

    Re: OFFICIAL: New Panamera (2016)

Cars with more than 500-600 hp need to be "politically correct" in the future, especially if they are not sports cars.

SUVs and sedans/station wagons with lots of power need a "green" image to survive. This is not really for the owners/buyers of these cars but for their social environment.

Nope...Paris is probably not the right place to do that.

Mike, if you are not in a hurry, wait for the Panamera Turbo S PHEV.

But the regular Panamera 4 e-Hybrid is already order-able through the dealers I was told.

    Re: OFFICIAL: New Panamera (2016)

My dealer confirmed that car, expects a very limited production and price approaching $300k which while sounds outrageous for a Panamera but not when you consider what it offers.

    Re: OFFICIAL: New Panamera (2016)

If the Panamera Turbo S PHEV costs ~$300K, and the Panamera Turbo is ~$150K, it's hard to imagine that there wouldn't be a "normal" Panamera Turbo S at ~$200K±. To not have one would seem like leaving money on the table.

No way a dealer could seriously confirm you that

My 2014 Panny Turbo has 55K miles right now and needs to be replaced with the new generation.

I've seen some features and specs for the PHEV Panamera 4 and the HP and torque look like it will be just as quick as the Turbo in USA-style driving.  170~ish top speed (irrelevant here), but tons of low-end torque.

I had an order configured for a Turbo, but have now changed to the Hybrid Panamera 4.  It's not available on the USA configurator and the dealer's PDF of info from early last month says release date and pricing to be determined.

My dealer principal just returned from the Panamera launch event and is really high on Porsche's "new" e-Hybrid product philosophy focusing on performance addition rather than consumption subtraction.

The V8 Turbo version looks like it was baked-in to the basic design since the new 8-speed PDK case and bell housing is the same for hybrid and normal versions.  All they do is add an electric motor to the mix to create e-Hybrid versions.  The first version has the Turbo V6.  The Turbo V8 non-hybrid is already released, so it seems a straightforward path to add an electric motor to it and have the "S" model.

While the V8 "Turbo S" hybrid is very appealing, the Turbo V6 e-Hybrid will be just fine for my daily driver and likely to be here much sooner.

    Re: OFFICIAL: New Panamera (2016)

Anybody driven a new Tesla X crossover?  My neighbor just picked his up and will take me for ride/drive this weekend.  Tall and bulky looking, but has impressive torque and acceleration (at least by the specs).  Less than 3.0 seconds to 60mph, and top speed upwards of 160.  I don't expect great handling, but I will probably be impressed by acceleration.  Also, I have heard the falcon like doors are gimmicky and problematic.

    Re: OFFICIAL: New Panamera (2016)

Should maybe have posted my question on the Cayenne thread, so happy to be shifted there if appropriate.

One of my patients have one and I've looked at it briefly. I think the rear door opening may be trouble in certain tight parking spots.

Also, I think very fast acceleration without good handling to match is asking for trouble.Smiley

In the USA, fast acceleration is the only meaningful spec.  Our speed limits are so slow that hustling up to them is all the fun one is permitted to have!
