    X51 a waste of dough?

    especially if supercharging?

    Supercharging? I wouldn't do it.
    Reasons:
    1. Reliability
    2. Resale value
We also had a lot of aftermarket turbo charged 996 (NOT 996 Turbo or GT2 of course which have a completely different engine ) over here in Germany which had lots of problems with reliability.

Re: X51 a waste of dough?

    Hi RC.

The SC in question has been on a car doing heavy track work for well over a year and was designed by a team that (successfully) races Porsches. And, I don't care about resale. My current car could be taken back to stock in a day, has 12k miles, is a mere 3 years old, and isn't worth two thirds of MSRP. Porsche resale value sucks and will likely never return to the good ole days (ie: pre-996). As a result, I made a decision a while ago to do whatever I want to "my" car for "my" enjoyment without regard to what resale is.

    Here is an article fwiw:

I don't know any racing team to race a supercharged Porsche in a professional racing series.
And I don't know any racing team to race a 996 with the "ordinary" M96 engine in a professional racing series.
And how can you be sure about reliability if a racing team/tuner can repair the car as often as they like to and people wouldn't even know.
It makes a difference if you race a car a few rounds or if you drive it day by day in traffic, stop and go, bad fuel, hot air, etc.

A little question: why does Porsche use a different engine on the 996 Turbo and GT2 and even on the GT3?
I guess you know the answer.
    But its your money.

Porsche keep their resale value pretty well if they're stock.
As soon as people start to modify/tune them, they loose in value.
Also very important is the color of the car.
I rarely see yellow, red or white Porsche over here in Germany... Don't know about the US.

Re: X51 a waste of dough?

The SC is not being designed for racing (nor will I be using it for that - it might not even see the track)! Further, in the U.S., if a product is not even close to as advertised, lawsuits ensue. IOW, around here you usually have to have a pretty good basis for your claims and you won't get away with selling a grossly misrepresented or deficient product for long.

Again my car is black/grey which is a good color combo and returning it to bone stock tomorrow, I'd be lucky to get 2/3rds of MSRP after less than three years (and a mere 12k of religiously serviced miles). Then again, getting $10 or $20k less on resale cause I SC the next one won't bother me either. It's my car for my pleasure. Sometimes that costs :-)

Well, I won't comment on the lawsuite thing. I'm in the US at least twice a year, so if you're right I'd have to sue almost a dozend of product manufacturers every time I'm there.
"Best Pretzel in the World"...well, I ate a better one at my local Pretzel shop.
To be serious: the 996's engine isn't designed for supercharging and Porsche had a lot of trouble to adapt a turbo charger to it (one reason why they seem to have abandoned the project and went with a different engine on the 996 Turbo/GT2) but I think you already made your decision.

If you need a car for pleasure, why no 996 Turbo? It has lots of power, you can get another 50 HP with little money and it is one of the most reliable Porsche cars I ever met.
Too much money? Get a used one.

Re: X51 a waste of dough?

"...To be serious: the 996's engine isn't designed for supercharging..."

would you be surprised to hear (as i was) rumors that RUF was doing just that? if RUF is doing it, i'm certain it's just fine. (btw, any chance you could look into these rumors given your relationship and proximity to RUF?).

"If you need a car for pleasure, why no 996 Turbo?"

    MUST be a cab.

    "It has lots of power..."

And weight - especially in a cab.

    Relationship and proximity to RUF?
I enjoyed a meal with Alois and his wife but nothing more.
Not sure if this can be called a relationship.

I try it from a different angle of view: Tuners have to earn money.
Ruf does a good job and this is why I don't think he sells supercharged Porsches.
And if he would, I probably would change my opinion about him.

Right now RUF doesn't offer any supercharged model.
Of course, there is a new model expected for 2003 and I can't exclude it will be supercharged. But I almost bet that this model wouldn't be streetlegal in Germany (which means a lot because certification over here is a pretty serious thing).

A last hint: I don't know any Porsche Tuner in Germany who offers a supercharger kit for the 996.

Regarding a Cab: 996 Turbo Cab comes soon...

Re: X51 a waste of dough?

"Regarding a Cab: 996 Turbo Cab comes soon..."

at 3650+ lbs full of gas :-(

BTW, have you seen Atlas Grey and is it possible to get a picture of it on a Porsche?
