    BMW 6

Check out www.autospies.com for a full set of official BMW 6 pictures.
I must admit, I've never been a fan of Bangle BMWs but this one does it for me, it looks fantastic in black, profile is sleek and elegant and the interior seems to be perfect.
And of course soon to be a 8000rpm screeming V10 500 hp (minimum)
Mr Bangle, you needed time to mature, and I'm the first one to admit, well done, you've just announced the death of the CL, XK8, etc...
IMO, the $100,000 GT segment should be scared, very scared indeed.
    Fanch.

    Re: BMW 6

    fanch,
do you really like the 6 series?

i think it's awful... the ugly boot from the 7, the ugly front from the Z4... and this in times where BMW somehow admits that bangle's flaming surfaces have been wrong somehow (or why this early 7 series facelift or the undramatic upcoming 3 series design?).

    have a nice weekend
    zz

    Re: BMW 6

You're not wrong, somehow the black color softens the lines, but I still think it looks good!
You're right about the 7 though, all BMWs receive a facelift but this one could come very early indeed.
As for the Z4, I don't like the back, but I like the front.
But a V10 my friend, humm, am atmo V10!!! Just the thought is great.
If there's ONE thing that BMW engineers are good at, it's the engines.
Remember the F1. Murray turned to BMW and asked for 550 hp (True) BMW gave him 77 extra just cause they could!
    Fanch.

    Re: BMW 6

don't get me wrong -- i LOVE BMW's. that's why i'm really worried about the origami design style (or "flaming surfaces"). the banglism isn't growing on me (which i'd hoped). i still want my beemers SLICK and with a driver orientated spaceship-style cockpit. audi is doing much better interiors recently.

the engines are really great... it's not like merc, just adding a charger. i really appreciate as well that they still keep rear drive at all models and the line-6 and not go for a V6 which would be more cost effective and does need less space under the hood.

and the mclaren F1 engine... oh yes nocken-paule's masterpiece.

BTW: what do you think of the SLR? i am really disappointed -- regarding that this is a car where gordan murray was head of development! probably merc didn't let him do anything

    Re: BMW 6

    Fanch,
I find the look of the new 6 to be awful. I can't understand why BMW went that route. No amount of horsepower will make that car look good to me.
And, Gordon Murray's first choice for the McLaren F1's engine was not BMW. The engines in the E46 M3 have not been holding together too well. Now they're going to build an all new high power V10. I wouldn't bet the farm on that engine.

    Greg

    Re: BMW 6

    Zz,
Regarding the SLR, I think it looks the part.
But I agree with you, I think that this car is more Merc than McL, poor Gordon When you know that the F1 weighs 1100kgs, waoh!
I still think it'll be a great car though, but more a super SL than a proper Carrera GT/ Enzo challenger.
    To Teflon,
I didn't know the M3 was not reliable, this is disapointing as I thought BMWs were very reliable, The M5 V8 too?
I have faith in the V10 though, design is 100% subjective but give them a chance in terms of engines! We don't even know the specs yet!
The 645 weighs 1600kgs which is heavy but better than the competition, it'll do 0 to 100kmh in 5.6 secs (ok, it's a pointless characteristic, but it's still better than all the opposition)
So if they keep the weight at 1600 kgs and let's assume the V10 is 500 hp minimum, that's the same power an SL55 with 300kgs less!!!
    Ok, where's cheque book!!!
    Fanch.

    Re: BMW 6

    Oh fanch no

The rear still looks as ugly as the 7 series. But I guess is just personal pereference.

I can tell by now that Bangle likes flat butts

    Re: BMW 6

I think I may be more with Fanch on this one. Yes, the 7 was shockingly obtuse and the new 5 is no better and, from what I've seen of the 7 restyling, it's not really going to get better.

But the 6 made me pause and look again. It is still just as weird but somehow the strangeness seems to work for it a little bit. I may be influnced by a jeweler friend I spoke to recently how is a BMW fan. When I asked what he thought of the new 7 he said he liked it. He described it as "in your face" styling. He further commented: "let's see the Japanese copy that!"

Have you seen the new honda accord, nissan maxima and lexus es300?
Although, to be fair, the ES300 came out before the new 7.

    Re: BMW 6

Or Toyota Solara was there even before that

Yes, and I agree those are more examples of odd styling but they don't carry through with a consistent theme the way the BMW does. They represent several design themes in one package which fails to either impress or repulse to the extent the BMW does. The BMW is a rolling sculpture with a consistent and cohesive theme throughout. I am not sure I like that sculpture and I am also not sure it should have ever been applied to an automobile.

What about the headlights on all these vehicles? Maybe we need to bring back the sealed beam headlight.

    SLR

I totally agree with you about the in-line 6, a much more balanced engine than the V6 which most people do not understand the difference. In the engineering point of view, I respect BMW's stubbornes to keep their cars as "driver's cars", but not their stubborness on the radical design objective.

As for the SLR and F1, I reckoned that they have a totally different goal and objective, its really difficult to judge at this point whether the SLR is a sucess or not, havent said that, I am still a little confused about the main objective of the SLR. Its not exactly a supercar nor a comfortable GT, what exactly is it? Are they trying to implement all the elements of a supercar in a practicle package?

    Re: SLR

i agree. that's what i do not like about merc at all -- they are no engineers by heart. why are they constructing a V8 with 3 valves per cylinder and a vibration-friendly cylinder angle of 75 degrees? sure they manage to work around it and the driver doesn't notice the difference that much. but this is not what i call real progress in technology. and if they need more power, they add a supercharger.

currently it seems to me that it's a megalomaniac SL, like the maybach is a megalomaniac S-class but i still have some hopes that gordon murray did more than deciding where the "McLaren" badge will be applied

    Re: SLR

Right now I think that the upcoming SL 65 AMG is the better deal compared to the SLR.
Honestly, I don't like the SLR too much. The sidepipes look strange and the very "feminine" body isn't quite my taste.
Right now I'm waiting for the engine figures to be able to create my final opinion.

Imagine this: a SL 65 AMG with 612 HP, any Tuner can get at least 700 HP out of this superb engine.
Now imagine a limited slip differential and the fun begins.
I know, the SLR is much lighter but I don't think this car is much faster than a SL 65 AMG on the Autobahn. And honestly: does anybody think that SLR owners will drive their expensive toy on the track? I doubt it.

i totally agree. it definetly no beauty, the similarity to ordinary mercs is to big and it doesn't look very sporty, kind of unbalanced. very strange. and it's typical merc that even at such a price tag extras like the turbine-style 19" rims are optional!!

like william, i really have no idea what they are up to. maybe they just want to use it as a marketing instrument to help selling their (facelifted) SL and new SLK range.

i recently read in car magazine (UK) that AMG is actually driving around with a 700 HP SL mule. having the recent merc/AMG power increases in mind, the introduction to the market shouldn't be that far away

    Right.

    Re: SLR

To me the SLR is quite over-designed. Everything looks a bit too much, the side air outlets, the wheels, the sidepipes, the whole nose with its somewhat F1 styling (at least they say so, I can't really see it) and and and.
Definitively the SL 55 and even more the SL 65 are the better choice.

A word to the 6-series BMW: this is the first BMW, where the terrible Bangle design doesn't look that strange. Personally I still don't like the front, but the rear looks different but not that bad to me. Not to say that it is a sleek design. IMO not the rear but the front is the problem (6 series and even more 7 series, but other way round at the new 5 series). A fact that BMW seems to confirm, as they want to change the front of the 7, while the rear stays more of less the same.

    Re: SLR

Look at the Z9 concept, the front was much better. I like how the hood line went through the lights, making the "eyebrows"...but...they just screwed it up a bit. If it looked just like the Z9, i would think its completely awesome...but I think they fell short. One of those designs that hints at something great, but doesnt quite reach its own ambition- PT Cruiser, Thunderbird, Most new BMWs....

here's a download link to a video (windows AVI format) where the 6 is driving around (i found the link on autospies.com)

    http://bilder.autobild.de/video/BMW_6er_xl.avi

    (approx 2 MB)

IMO it is SO UGLY, i can not believe it. it looks clumsy and hyundai-ish

...and the interior...... i am speachless. this is no car interior, it looks like some organic bathroom fittings!

Ha!!! Don't hold back! Let us know how you feel!

Well, as I said before, the 6 is somewhat more palatable to me but, there are certainly still some styling elements that are hard to come to grips with.

Organic bathroom fittings? That's great! Maybe with an iFlush?

Re: BMW 6 video ugliness proof

actually "hyundai-ish" is the best word for this most ugly BMW, i've ever seen (besides the X3)!!

the fact, that Bangle is paid by Daimler-Chrysler and Audi to destroy BMW on the long term sounds very logical to me, seeing this car.
