    Re: Cayman GT4

Here is the GT4 owners response to my review...my car has just had the Dundon Motorsport Headers fitted (as reference he makes to the sound improvement over last summer when we did our annual 6000km track tour together"....

"This is Leongs response to my post above:

A very thorough review as usual Mark . Yes an awesome day for it today. My first time driving a GT3 and one hugely exhilarating experience. Mark, your car sounds so much better now than over last summer. I thought I might get to hear my car from the outside for the first time when I got you to go in front of me, but it was pretty difficult as I couldn’t stay with you while trying to drive “quietly” in your car to hear it

The biggest differences I thought were in the steering and damping. More precise and easier to turn in than the GT4, and more compliant in the suspension with amazing body control. At the pace we were going, even with the foxing, we were nowhere near the GT3’s limits. Then the engine!! Mark, It wasn’t until you were in front of me that I used the full 9000rpm…. sorry if you wanted to hear what that sounded like from the outside. I just wasn’t used to revving that far, and of course, needed some time to get used to the car and that “other peoples car” factored into it too. And yes, that word “frenzied” is exactly how I would describe it if you dropped down to 2nd and used those revs. It’s an amazing engine, and the chassis can handle it. I’d agree that the chassis on the GT4 is less complaint, and on back road drives like today more power might be a liability. I think that on the track there would be less difference. Do our cars have the same shocks? ( at the front at least? ) It doesn’t feel like it.

Thanks for the drive Mark, and yes, I enjoyed getting back in my car as well. While not the machine the GT3 is, it’s still a great drivers car

    Re: Cayman GT4

Thanks Mark, very good review. I haven't driven the 991 GT3, but a a former 997 GT3 RS owner I can say that the GT4 engine lacks the ooohhh factor of a proper GT engine. But if I take into account the price I have paid and the overall package, it is the best Porsche I have ever owned (and I've owned many...).

Truth to be told: I am a die hard 911 fan, and I would miss one had I not have a 964... smiley

Great review. Thoroughly enjoyed reading it put into English words my thaughts on the GT4 VS GT3.

I like the GT4 , but  I would always miss the crazy engine of the GT3. The engine alone makes the GT3 worth any extras.

    Re: Cayman GT4

Never driven the GT4 but have my 991GT3. Absolutely love my GT3, took her out for a spirited drive along B roads, which are so bumpy and uneven near me or anywhere in the UK for that matter. The roads were also damp from rain early on in the morning and as Macca stated using the performance to its max requires 100% concentration. No wonder guys end up writing them off. Set on hard suspension and when going for it the driver aids really struggle to keep my baby in check. So enjoyable though.

Oh yes,,, the sound, its been said many time but it really is a epic event, going down the box via the PDK is awesome, even on my standard exhaust set up. Not bothering with any after market fits, not really needed, well, as far as I know indecision...

    Re: Cayman GT4

Great review! kiss Very interesting to read. Thanks a lot for sharing Macca wink

As Mikla wrote, I too think that one has to take the price into account when comparing the two. Because for 2/3 of the GT3 price, the GT4 will never deliver 3/3. The same applies to the GT3 and the GT3 RS. Different price, different product.

If Porsche had shoehorned the GT3 engine, PDK-S and asked the same price, then the GT4 would have been the successor of the GT3. Not because the GT4 necessarily is better, but because it would have made no sense to introduce such an identical car. The only motivation would have been if one were to replace the other. So I am happy that Porsche kept the price, performance and character different since there is space for both kiss

Having said that, one is obviously a bit more manly...

    Re: Cayman GT4

Good point - making the move from the GT4 to the GT3 right now and the financial difference is not trivial.  GT4 is the most fun car under $100k since the 996 GT3 and it came 12 years later and $15k cheaper (despite inflation).  GT4 is a great bargain!

Grant. If it is any consolation I have owned my 991 GT3 for almost three years and 25,000 km now (plenty track days) and it is worth no less than what I paid for it. Infact I Europe & UK it would actually be worth still 15%+ MORE than I paid for it.

So the step up to 991.,2 GT3 may be higher but the residuals will be stronger than GT4 longer term IMO. That means you will save money over the long run assuming you keep it a few years.

Just another perspective to help you justify the outlay ;-)

    Re: Cayman GT4

Hi Throt. Hope you are well.  Im REALLY happy with my 991 GT3 even after all this time.

I do have my name on an allocation for the 991.2 GT3 but will only buy the car if there is announced a significant re design in the valve -train or oiling of the engine to address the weakness of the MA175/6 engines in the 001 GT3+RS and 911R.

If the change is just minor (for example DLC cams, some marketing guff and talk of "completely redesigned since 2013 991 GT3") then I will keep my 991 GT3 as to be honest on track I cannot think of a better transmission and with the Dundon Motorsports Race headers I now have -20kg and over 500 bhp with around 345lbft torque. An its sounds great, especially that last 500 rpm and the "lightening shift"; function which gives you always a kick in teh seat when it changes up under flat foot acceleration on the straights at the track.

If I do happen to take up the 991.2 GT3 allocation I will probably try and time it so I get a mid 2018 delivery (RHD deliveries in NZ are unlikely to start until Dec 2017), and I will keep my 991 GT3 right up until the 991.2 arrives so as I may have no downtime at the track. Essentially the car will be 4.5 years old and still within the extended warranty. I imagine by then there will be further depreciation and I will get a little less than I paid for the car as a trade. That being said for 4.5 years and lets say 45,000km with 35-40 track days it will have presented very cost effective motoring and alot of excitment to boot...

    Re: Cayman GT4

The car is no joke, we got it up on a hoist and inspect the underside.

All bushings are solid ones, even the engine mounts. The adjustment possibility of the suspensions are almost endless.

Everything is beefy, nothing jumps out as the weak point.

The brakes, non-boosted so needed quite a bit of effort to get the initial bite, but since these are the Cup car brakes I know once into operating temperature they will bite like crazy.

    A man's GT4 smiley

With German license plates? This would be quite amazing (in a positive sense). It would be interesting to learn how the owner did it.

Yes, I did post those photos  ( will try to find them again ) . Car in the process of getting final German certification . It had already the temporary plates . I did talk with the owner about the process he is getting though . Not easy, but possible .
