Love road trips, just finished my biannual trip back from Palm Springs to Vancouver. Dropped off the wife at PSP airport and did the 1900 km (1300 mi) by myself. My trusted 2010 ML Diesel loves this trip. Range compared to your GLS 450 is 600 miles, your bladder weakens before the tank is empty. Beautiful drive up, cruising all day on the Interstate 5, averaged 67 mph over the trip including heavy traffic in LA, Olympia and Tacoma! Saw a nice GT4 race car being towed to Buttonwillow by a camper on Friday, any Rennteamer?

SSO.:I doubt an EVs batteries would hold up very well in sub zero temperature.
Agree but soon we’ll have the opportunity to try that trip since EVs are being forced on us. Stellantis announced it will only ship PHEVs to dealerships in 14 states that have taken the California standards as their own over federal regulation.

A great read, love these road trips. We're actually planning one this winter just for fun, from Chicago to Anchorage, with rentals or with a 4x4 we'd buy on a budget. Looking forward to it immensely.

Maybe you should talk to Watt to get some advice for some proper dog transport vehicles.
Nice report, liked it a lot.

Porker:SSO.:Chicago to Anchorage is some very challenging conditions.
That would be the point, but might be underestimating it a bit. For sure an adventure!
Sounds like a job for a hard core, old school, build like a rock, SUV (Toyota Land Cruiser?)

Definitely a tough truck or SUV is needed for that trip and I’m not sure if all the roads to Anchorage, through Canada, will be open in the winter. One vehicle to avoid is Range Rover. A relative’s ex-wife recently took delivery of a Range Rover. The car had problems that required the use of a loaner car from the dealership. On the drive home, that Range Rover caught fire and burned to the wheels! O-2 for new Range Rovers is simply horrible.

A Glickenhaus SCG Boot would be perfect.

We put ourselves a limit of USD5k for our car of choice, we might have to reconsider that indeed.

Well, good new winter tires will cost you 40% of your budget.........

I just saw a rusted out 1998 Ford Explorer drive by with $3,500 OBO written on the windscreen. I wouldn’t trust that vehicle on even a 100 mile trip in the Spring or Fall. I think a budget of $15,000 would get a satisfactory ride for that trip.
