Porsche #2 in recent J.D. Power Dependability Survey

We all know surveys are biased, but this seems like good news

Re: Porsche #2 in recent J.D. Power Dependability Survey

Porsche 911 still #1 in the Premium Sport Car category as always.

But Porsche is back at the top in the overall clasification... what a come back for Porsche after the Cayenne sank Porsche to the bottom in the overall ranking in the last one.

Mercedes still deep in the hole with Audi & VW...

Re: Porsche #2 in recent J.D. Power Dependability Survey

Looks like Mercedes and especially Audi are dwindling pretty low on that chart...

Re: Porsche #2 in recent J.D. Power Dependability Survey

funny, i always thought of audi as a reliable car, maybe our spec'd audi's are more reliable?

Re: Porsche #2 in recent J.D. Power Dependability Survey

Autoweek ran a reader poll as it does every year and typically Porsche 911 is on top in the sport car category.

This year the 911 did not make the top three. It was the Corvette, Lotus Elise and would you believe the Boxster? Can it be readers are getting tired of looking at the same old, same old? I am curious don't you guys get tired as well?

In the exotic class, it was the Ford GT, CGT and 430. BTW, I saw my first Ford GT on the road. It was black and I must say it looked good. Too bad it has the quality problems.

Re: Porsche #2 in recent J.D. Power Dependability Survey

According to the long-term dependability results for Porsche on jdpowers.com, the 911 has top long-term reliability ratings. It's the other Porsche models (Boxster and Cayenne) that drag Porsche's overall rating down. For the 2002 model year (the most recent model year with long term reliability figures), the 911 has the highest score (5 dots) for all four long term ratings categories (mechanical dependability, feature and accessory dependability, body and interior dependability, and overall dependability) whereas the Boxster has the lowest score (2 dots) for mechanical dependability and the next lowest score (3 dots) for the other three long term ratings categories. If true, that's an excellent reason to pick a 911 over a Boxster.

Re: Porsche #2 in recent J.D. Power Dependability Survey

I can't imagine why the Boxster would have much poorer results than the 911 - they share ALOT of their parts - very strange...

Re: Porsche #2 in recent J.D. Power Dependability Survey

Maybe more 'omfg, they put the key in the wrong place' type of guys are buying boxsters?

Re: Porsche #2 in recent J.D. Power Dependability Survey

Most categories have US brands in the top3.. that's something I haven't seen reflected at all in my 4.5 yrs US residence. Weird. When I lived there and asked owners of US cars why they chose this or that brand, I didn't hear a single person say they'd buy the homemade vehicle because it's so reliable. The reasons were usually monetary advantages (worked for GM etc.), desired/required car type (pickup trucks!) or patriotic motivation (I buy German cars too, what can I say? ).

Product quality is significantly affected by the culture, management, and training of the workers on the assembly line. For example, Japanese cars made in Japan are consistently more reliable than Japanese cars made in the USA. According to the Porsche 986 Boxster FAQ http://www.986faq.com/1-0/default.asp, "Most [boxster] cars destined for North America are built in Finland [by Valmet]." So that could help account for the significant difference in reliability between the Boxster and the 911, which is assembled in Stuttgart.

Good point - that doesn't bode well for the Cayman then

Re: Porsche #2 in recent J.D. Power Dependability Survey

Its too bad the survey doesn't differentiate buyers from leasers. After sparring a few rounds with the US EPA over the 993 SAI defect I've come to realize that Porsche owners are too paranoid about resale value to really be truthful about problems with their cars.
