    Carrera S Light front end!!

    Been driving my car hard recently and am noticing how light the front does feel, on uneven surfaces it bobs and jumps around alot ,this is a lot worse when fuel tank is near empty! i try to always keep the car atleast half full with fuel, this does seem to make the front slightly more planted and also slightly less prone to understeer! maybe it is just my imagination. The light front is only noticed on bumpy country roads, although i must say that steering feel is still amazing, and you always know what the car is doing!

    What are you comparing the steering feel to - ie. what were you driving before?

    Also, is it only at speeds > 180 km/h that it starts to feel "light"

    I too have noticed the lightness in the front end. Particularly noticeable on high speed sweepers that have expansion joints. I have decided to ignore it and enjoy. The way I figure it, if my other more moderate cars can do it, the 997 surely won't let me down. In the rain, it is a different story, I keep the speeds down.

    The unbelievable lightness of steering! I originally went from an Audi S4 to a 996 C4S and felt comfortable but soon realized what I was missing. The 997s is a world apart and significantly better in terms of steering feel. Lighter, yes, but also much nicer at any speed.

    In previous posts, this was mentioned. I think a porsche will feel different from any car seeing it's not typically mid-engined etc. the engine sits right at the back! So yes, it will take a little getting used to but, once you get the feel of it I think you will drive it like the machine it was meant to be!

    LeCHef: Have you been driving this winter with the 997 ? How was it compared to C4S? I am in the process of ordering a 997 C4S, but still hesitate to go for the C2S ( now I drive an Audi TT quattro)
    I have driven the 996 C4S and 997 C2S, but only in good weather conditions ...I liked the 997 much better, but I can imagine the 997 C4S will not feel the same as 996 C4S

    Light Front End ? Try a couple bags a see ment where the tire ought to be. Works in my pic up truck

    I was initially nervous about moving from the relative security of Audi's four wheel drive system (I also had a TT Quattro) to a rear wheel drive 997. However, I have not regretted it at all - the car is actually a lot more controlable than the TT because it communicates so much more. I have driven it in snow, rain and occasionally the dry too...

    I too found the bobbing about disconcerting. On two consecutive days I did an indicated 130mph in my 944 Turbo and then my 997. the 944 felt planted but the 997 swayed. I think it is probably a learning curve as it is my first 911.

    I sold my C4S last autumn, and my 997S arrived a few weeks ago, so missing Chicago's winter.

    I'm sure it will not be as good as the C4S in really bad conditions, but it will get driven through the winter on snow tires which are essential here.

    I'm lucky enough to have an Audi allroad as the second car which helps in bad weather. More than anything else though I distrust other drivers in bad weather more than I worry about the 997's ability to get through.

    In Britain you really have nothing to worry about in terms of weather. I wouldn't bother with awd if I lived there. the trade off in road feel and handling is not worth it.

    The C4S will feel a little like your Audi TT, so there's a familiar comfort factor to it, but over time I got frustrated by the difficulty in throttle steering the C4S and not being able to hang the tail out. The car also always felt nose heavy, which is not what I really wanted from a 911.

    I would stick with a C2S if I lived in Britain

    this is concerning to me as I do track days...do you guys know of aftermarket spoiler maker that would actually provide better downforce for the front (ie not jsut for looks) and any actual measurements and numbers?

    Track days in a 997S do not need any more front end downforce. Its quite simple, go into a corner and adjust the cars attitude with the throttle. If you really want just lift your foot a little and wait till the rear comes out and plant it, holding a beautiful 3rd gear slide for as long as you like.

    Mind you that can work out expensive as I killed two rears doing that in one day !

    That's exactly what we did 25 years ago with the 911 from then... 50 kg cement in the trunk, and let's go !

    Sure it is. I was a feeling the same but once you get advantage of these major masses back there it's all joy.

    BTW the light front end is a matter also of having one of the smallest wheelbase available (smaller than a Ford Ka or a MINI...).

    Yes, it does go very light at the front end. I was driving not too hard over a bumpy road, going around a sweeping corner at the same time. I was more playing with the throttle to keep the car in line.

    I went from an Audi TT quattro to a Boxster S. It's mid not rear engine but also rear wheel drive. Can't comment on high speeds (no Autobahn here in the UK), but the handling is hugely different especially during sudden manoeuvres (rapid 180 turn, evade, braking/accelerating in curves, etc).

    The Boxster can get really miffed when I expose her to such moves (which I didn't even blink about in the TT), and PSM kicks in. The front is definitely lighter (feels more "mobile"?) and the steering wheel wants attention at all times. It's real fun, but can get a bit tiring during long drives.

    I know I know, it's about learning to drive it the right way, but there's definitely a learning curve when moving from front engine 4wd to mid/rear engine rear wheel drive.

    My next driver ed event is scheduled for Sep.

    I have driven the C2S up to 300 kph and it didn't feel threatening light in high-speed bends. SportAuto's test commented on that one as well and stated that it is way less obvious than on its predecessor but more obvious than, let's say, in a Mercedes limousine!

    In fact the steering as much as the suspension is MILES ahead of the TT, which was bashed heavily here in Europe for its very critical high-speed behavior in its very first edition. You cannot escape the fact that the TT's chassis is derived from the Volkswagen Golf's!

    If you have difficulties with a light front end I would check tire pressure very precisely and maybe even alignment, but that should be coordinated with your local dealer in that case. I have no knowledge how sensitive the 997 is to these facts.

    The C4S has a different suspension setting and along with its wider track at the rear is said to be much more stable in high-speed turns. This seems, along with even better traction, be the biggest difference to the 2WD counterpart!
