    PCA Driver Ed Event

This weekend I took my Cayenne to our local PCA's Driver Education event at Motorsports Ranch, near Fort Worth Texas. It was a fantastic experience and I was able to get about 150 miles of track time over a two day period. There was an impressive variety of vehicles to see as well, including the one below.

    Re: PCA Driver Ed Event

Did the 917 run on the track?

Please elaborate (any more great pix?).

    Re: PCA Driver Ed Event

The 917 is still incredible looking and performing.

The 917 makes the LMP2 car look terribly ugly by comparison.

What a joy to come here and view a fresh picture of a 917.

Thank you very very much for posting it.

Yes, I took several photos. I will post a couple more that I like. It did not run on the track, at least not while I was there. It was pushed out for a couple hours of show and then pushed back into a garage. This track has a large number of private garages for rent. I didn't really count them but there must be a hundred or so, many with some very interesting machinery.

    Re: PCA Driver Ed Event

    And here's another.

    Re: PCA Driver Ed Event

Here's a photo that I like from one of the garages at the track.

    Re: PCA Driver Ed Event

Here's some cars waiting their turn at the track. I'm number 52.

    Re: PCA Driver Ed Event

Great pictures! I have never seen that view of a 917 like that in the second picture. What an amazing machine.

When I opened this thread I got chills just from looking at that first picture. I cant even imagine what it was like to see it in person.

    Re: PCA Driver Ed Event

Wow a Gulf Porsche 917! thanks for the photos!

    Re: PCA Driver Ed Event

looked like a lot of fun GM austin i also had the chance to see a 917 at one of our trackday events last year, took pictures on my phone but it got stolen

    Re: PCA Driver Ed Event

Wow! I had not expected quite so much interest in the 917. I'll post a few more photos (I'm using an Olympus C8080). I do not know any background on this car, but I might be able to find out. I will report back if I find out more.

    Re: PCA Driver Ed Event

    A rear photo.

    Re: PCA Driver Ed Event

    Another

    Re: PCA Driver Ed Event

After doing a little research, I believe this is a Kraftwerkz LMK917 (web page). While it is not an original 917, it is a very good reproduction.

    Re: PCA Driver Ed Event

    Awesome pics Gary!
    Thanks a lot!

    Thanks!

That's a very interesting web site.

6-zylinder power @ 1800 pounds should still be exciting.

Mike - Wasn't the original even lighter (and with 12-cylinders of course)?

    Re: PCA Driver Ed Event

The Kraftwerk 917's are so close to the originals (other than the engine) that they are allowed to run in HSR and SVRA vintage races as a true 917. More than a few true 917 owners also use Kraftwerk for replacement parts as they are the only place to get many new parts on demand (NOS is next to impossible to find and HUGE $$$$ if you ever do...)

I thought they we a little lighter than 1800lbs? Somewhere around 1675-1700? Doesn't matter though, just replace the non funtioning flat fan with an intercooler and put a 700bhp turbo engine in it and you're all set...

I just checked Ludvigsen's Volume 2 (of 3) and found all sorts of details on engine dimensions and aerodynamic measurements, but not one mention of vehicle weight.

Various web sites seem to indicate a dry weight of 800 kg (1760 lbs.) as the most common figure.

I don't think I could notice a 40 lb weight difference in any fast car that I have ever driven.

True enough. I think a 993TT motor would motivate that thing pretty well

I can't vouch for how true to the original it is, but I did take note of the fit/finish and hardware and I thought it was very good. Some of the small details, like the windshield wiper or the interior hardware and switchgear, had that finely machined look that I associate with experimental or scientific machinery. It all looked like it was carefully machined from aircraft aluminum.
