    Re: 998 in 2007?

Just like the 997, the first 998s will be the Carrera 2 and Carrera 2 S first, C4 and C4S later, and the Turbo and GT3 after that.

I don't understand, why do the Porsche fans on this board seem to 'hate' the idea of a new 911? Aren't you supposed to be excited that you would be able to upgrade your 911s earlier? I'm sorry but I just don't get the skeptisms.

If 911 sales do not pick up? I didn't even have a chance to testdrive an S because they were all spoken for. But, I'll stop by Newport Auto Center and see for myself today to see if they have any 997's lying around.

Porsche sport car sales hace been down since late 2003. The Wall Street Journal about 3 months ago in reviewing the 997 indicated that 911 sales were off over 40%. The same article stated that Cayenne sales were saving Posrche.

911 and Boxster sales are BECAUSE last year sales were so bad. In addition, there is "talk" in the industry that Porsche is deliberately reducing allocation for only this year in order to deal with the industry criticism of Porsches vanishing exclusivity.

The flood gates will open with the 2006 rendition assuming there are customers to be it. However, given that those that wanted one bought this year and the 997 TT and other variations are being introduced, the 997 coupe and S may be headed for the dust bin in sales. I cannot imagine what the resale will be on those cars. What a nightmare.

I applaud your enthusiasm , but the reality of the highly capitalized car biz is that you nmust do what's right for the shareholders . So 4-6 year cycles are the norm for higher end cars , not 3-4 years like appliance cars like Camry.
One of the knocks for Lexus , from feedback from customer surveys and dealership council is that they put all their eggs in one basket at a car's intro , and don't sequentually add or embelish in subseq model years . Helps win comparo contests in mags, but showroom buzz is gone after 18 months and models always seem " old " . So they are going the MBZ route from now on and adding new bells and whistles , drivetrain enhancements yearly . That might not sit right with the early buyers or those who can't ever decide to buy due to anaylsis by paralysis from internet rumors of perpetual "next year's improvements" but it does keep market buzz which dealers like .

I have also heard that the 998 will be available as early as 2008. The 998 will be a totally new generation, (like the 996 to the 993), new roof construction etc. It's said to have the V8s from the Cayenne and maybe the six strecthed to 4 liters (not decided yet).
It's supposed to have the Carrera GT lights.

OK, for the Porsche purists here, please don't flame me (you don't shoot the messenger). I think it's great to see Porsche move forward with new designs, especially with Michael Mauer now on board.

Here's a chop of how the 998 might look like..

I like the looks of those intakes behind the doors. Hey, maybe I should get on my dealer's wait list for the 998TT!

I really don't get it: why do people want a 998 NOW?
    I mean we're still missing the 997 C4/C4S (coming this autumn), the 997 C4 Cab/C4S Cab, 997 GT3, 997 Turbo, etc.
I'd say that around MY 2008, there could be a minor facelift but we don't expect a 997 successor before MY 2010 (summer 2009).

If you must know, many Porsche enthusiast are looking for something new, creative and exciting. Look alike cars with incremental HP increases for various models of the same class is getting old. The CGt has been the most exciting model Porsche has produced in a number years. It is original and very Porsche like.

The 911 today is Porsche like circa 1970.

    Re: 998 in 2007?

    Very true!
I have a friend who was in the market for the 996's replacement, and he had high hopes for something revolutionary in terms of design (as any 911 is already the best-handling).
He was very disappointed with the 997. He would wait for Michael Mauer's 998.

    Re: 998 in 2007?

The 997 has the silhouette of the 996 . The F430 has the 360 silhouette , just as the 355 had the 348's. The C6 Corvette has the C5's . The next versions of all 3 will be the true next generation . It's interesting how these 3 icons evolve in lock step over the years .

No one will mistaken a 355 with a 360 or a 430. The C6 is clearly different from the C5. Looking at a 996/997 unless your an enthusiast, you would not know which is the latest model.

Haha, wtf is wrong with this guy? Never read anything more stupid... Got to search for all his posts.

That 430 espresso boiler looks like a 360 (yes, it does!) because it is supposed to... and the 997 looks like a 996 because it is supposed to.

Since resale was discussed, I wonder what will happen with Ferrari prices now when you can get a Maserati with the same engine block and technology for half the price.

    Re: 998 in 2007?

I dont agree with much of what nberry says, but he didnt just say a 430 wasnt like a 360. However, the previous post didnt say that either, it said 430 is like 360 and 355 is like 348.

I would say a 997 is just as much if not more different to its predecessor than a 430. However, the 355->360 change is probably more different than any 911 change.

Nick, how did you possibly get through law school with with what appears to be a central auditory processing disorder ? Your response shows everyone on this board how your reading comprehension has some serious deficits . I feel sad for you , in a way ,as the posts following yours shows the proper understanding of my post in response to yours before it.Take care and have a nice 4th with your nice new car .

    Re: 998 in 2007?

360 with f430? those can easily be confused! i had one in my rearview and thought it was a 360 until it pulled up beside me.

    Re: 998 in 2007?

360/430 is like 996/997, if one's not a Ferrari/Porsche fan they're unlikely to notice the differences in detail.

355 to 360 is a change in platform, and I hope the 998 (with now Michael Mauer on board instead of Harm Lagaay who had sat on the office for a really long time), I'm hoping that we would see some radical changes on the 998.

I'm with Nick on this one, it's time for 911 to change more.

That's easy- not much difference between the 996 and 997. The base versions even have the same HP. The 997 is what the 996 should've been. I look forward to something really different, ala 993->996. The rumors are tantalizing, could we really see a mid-engine 911? V8 (with 400hp)? Now that's something different!

    Re: 998 in 2007?

CAR reported that the 998 will stay being rear-engined, but Porsche will have a new supercar lineup (spiritual successor to the Carrera GT) which will be mid-engined and available as coupe and roadster. The new model will compete with mid-engined Lamborghinis and Ferraris. V8 or V10 engine, and prices will start where the 998s end (meaning higher than the Turbo). It's still years away as it will share many components with the 998 and 988. The internal development code is E3.
