Chrono clock in lower regions of dashboard ?

    Hi all!

I remember very well the first original Porsche video from the development of the 997. You can see there the swivelling clock disappearing into the dashboard. Very nice !
Also in the new Porsche 997 catalogue is written about these function.

Does somebody knows if these function is available on MY2006 cars

    Greetings

Re: Chrono clock in lower regions of dashboard ?

sorry but i don't quite know what you're talking about, can you be more specific?

Re: Chrono clock in lower regions of dashboard ?

    @Mike S

Sorry - may be my English is a little

I try it again : I don't like to see these sport chrono clock on the dashboard the whole time. I like to order the Chrono option but not with these ugly clock.
At the beginning of the development of the 997 - Porsche himself wanted to let the clock disappear when it's not in use (as described in the options book of Porsche 997).

And I still hope that these "swivelling clock" will come on the MY2006.

    Any ideas ?
    Gregor

Re: Chrono clock in lower regions of dashboard ?

The swiveling clock you saw was in a film about the 997's development. It was done on a clay model of the vehicle. I am not sure it was ever intended as a permanent feature, but perhaps a quick way to view the car in both configurations for design purposes. I do not believe there is any plan for the '06 sport chrono to swivel in this manner.

Re: Chrono clock in lower regions of dashboard ?

Things are staying the same for MY 2006, no change.
The stop watch was a MUST HAVE option desired by somebody "up up" in Porsche leadership and I'm afraid there won't be any changes in the near future. BTW: some people like me hate it, others love it (incl. my wife and some other people I spoke to).

Re: Chrono clock in lower regions of dashboard ?

I kinda like it and it's what attracted me to the car even though I knew I'd probably never use it. It's probably psychological and the "I've got something you don't factor."

It would have been a nice feature to have it be able to disappear into the dash. Doesn't look like that will happen and it will probably be gone altogether in the next model generation.

Re: Chrono clock in lower regions of dashboard ?

The clock on the dash is only irritating if you obsess over it. I don't even think about mine day to day. It's just there, and who cares... No big deal. The added fun-factor of the Sport button far outweighs the wart on my dash, and it is a nifty conversation piece and unique feature.

Re: Chrono clock in lower regions of dashboard ?

The swiveling and dissapearing chrono ( by designers ) was probably nixed ( by engineering ) for manufacturing hassles and/ or packaging ( ? interfering with HVAC ducting , etc. ) reasons .

Re: Chrono clock in lower regions of dashboard ?

I love the look of the sports chrono. Reminds me of how we used to lust after gauges to stick on the dashboard and hood of our muscle cars. To some people that didn't grow up around muscle cars guess the sports chrono would look weird but to me it adds to the cars racey, performance look.

Agreed. To me it doesn't look really good, but it doesn't bother me either. You'll get used to it.

Re: Chrono clock in lower regions of dashboard ?

    Hi!

    No plan to swivel ?

And why is the sport chrono described as "swivelling" inside the Porsche 997 order books

I remeber very well the first spy shot of a 997 parking in front of a house month ago. Everbody in the different forums thought that the watch was only a joke

    Hate the watch

I read in my owners manuel that it swivels but haven't tried it.

The more precise throttle response that comes with the sports chrono is a must imo. Don't think I'll track the car but I used the clock for a trip that my wife and I went on a couple of weeks ago. It's really nice to look at the elapsed time instead of trying to figure it out on a wristwatch every time you're curious.

Re: Chrono clock in lower regions of dashboard ?

I did have the same sentiments initially... I it does grown you and soon you just don't' see it anymore.

It does swivel... just the clock itself within the housing... it goes to face left middle and right... that's about it.

On spy shots of the early clay -stage design mock ups, the clock housing flipped over completely , leaving a totally flat dash board when not used .

That would have been cool. I'll bet they thought it's more justified if it's in your face.

yup I hear that!....... too bad...

Re: Chrono clock in lower regions of dashboard ?

Wouldn't that be fairly easy to achieve by someone with a little acumen? Or is there something underneath blocking it?

I agree that it is b***-ugly!
