Auto Express: Greatest Drives (Issue 863)

Just came through the letter box. Skimmed to find the Boxster (note, the 2.7 - they didn't test the S) coming 2nd out of 20 contenders. 997S Came 4th. However before anyone gets too uppity, there is a bit of a dose of 'value for money' going on in the rankings - top was the Golf GTi. Plus they were giving them 'star' ratings on Road/Track/Value.

I'll post more later, but if anyone in the UK wants to browse the magazine shelf of WHSmith at lunchtime...

Oh, they used the Anglesey track, which is the track used on Fifth Gear to compare. The 2.7 Boxster lapped quicker than the M5.

    Contenders and lap times:

    • Evo IX - 52.09
    • 997S - 52.58
    • TVR Sagaris - 52.93
    • Scooby STi PPP - 53.19
    • Boxster 2.7 - 53.26
    • BMW M5 - 53.80
    • Nissan 350Z GT4 - 53.85
    • Renaultsport Megane Trophy - 54.43
    • Audi TT Sport - 54.76
    • Merc CLS 55 AMG - 54.89
    • VW Golf GTi - 55.18
    • Cadillac CTS-V - 55.32
    • Monaro VXR - 55.68
    • Renaultsport Clio Cup - 55.70
    • BMW 330i - 55.97
    • Ford Fiasco ST - 56.02
    • MINI Cooper S Works - 56.12
    • Citroen C2 VTS - 56.73
    • Skoda Fabia vRS S'chips - 56.85
    • Ford Mucus 2.0 TDCi - 58.47

or how about the Ford Fiasco! Almost as good. Someone's just having fun with the Ford Focus name.

In Denmark we call it the Ford FuckUs

Nothing wrong with the Focus, I can assure you. I've had one for 2 1/2 years and it a truly excellent workhorse. It isn't a Porsche, but it doesn't pretend to be.

Re: Auto Express: Greatest Drives (Issue 863)

I'm pretending to be a tree.... can you see? Yoo hoo!

Touched a nerve there, eh Dreamcar? I had a wibbly wobbly Golf Mk4 before, so I can't talk! Focus is actually a good car.

Forgive me, I was just playing with the names a little. Obviously enough to hoodwink Australians. Sorry guys!

Thankfully the Skoda escaped your editing

Oooh, you could have lots of fun with Fabia...

    ...But do I need to?

Anyone want to comment on the lap times or article, or have I successfully derailed the thread before it even got going?

Re: Auto Express: Greatest Drives (Issue 863)

    just amazing how a humble 2.7L can out-gun a M5..

looking at the list, it an odd looking assortment of cars to compare tho.

How about the concept car the Ford " SYNus " . Was supposed to be pronounced " sin-u-ouos ", but everyone at the Detroit auto show called it " sinus " , nice complement to " mucous ", don't you think ? Next model should be labeled " Ford Flem " .

Well my mother in law refers to our fine sports cars as the "Porsche Botox".

Re: Auto Express: Greatest Drives (Issue 863)

My other half refers to it as "What's that heap of cr@p doing in my space?"

Yeah, I know. Very odd collection! And I was suprised by the M5 time too. But then again, lap-times aren't the whole story I suppose.

nice one! I'm not sure it would pass the emission tests though.

Yeah, I know. Very odd collection! And I was suprised by the M5 time too. But then again, lap-times aren't the whole story I suppose.

    The M5 has a ration of 3,6 kg pr BHP. 0-100 = 4.7 sec
    The Boxster 5.3 kg pr BHP, 0-100 = 6.2
The figures are definately siding with the BMW, but imagine throwing 1830 kg heavy sedan into a corner next to the nimble mid-engine Boxey at 1295 kg.

Don't forget that the Boxster S even outran the Ferrari Enzo in slalom.
The M5 will eat the Boxey for breakfast on the straights, but in narrow turns it's simply too heavy.
    Hence the time results.

I'd love to see the actual testing.
I think the two cars must have lapped the track very, very differently.
The beemer must have been going "Wroooooom! Aaargh! Stoooop! Wroooooom! Aaargh! Stoooop! Wroooooom! Aaargh! Stoooop! Wroooooom! Aaargh! Stoooop!....." and the Boxer probably a bit smoother.

    This concludes my scientific report

Ford Mucus - 'Snot a good name
