    Re: 2006 Vette Z06 price just announced - $65k

What a deal! Sadly, Ben and I were discussing buying one for primarily track work.

Ben witnessed a 04 Z06 with minor modifications tear up everything on the track including Murci's, Porsche's and Ferrari's. He was really impressed with the performance of the car.

    Re: 2006 Vette Z06 price just announced - $65k

Yeah, the 2004 Z06 is one of the fastest street-legal track cars in the US. The 2006 will have 100hp more, incredible brakes (6 pads per wheel in front), carbon-fiber body panels and all aluminum and magnesium frame, dry sump oiling, a nice 6 speed (much improved), lots of rubber (335 rear tires) and alot more. Should be as fast or faster than a GT2 for 1/3 the price. And they don't disqualify the warranty if you track it. I was hoping that the price would be about $60k (and less with GM incentives), but it's still a good price...

Nick - you should still buy one and enjoy it in Ben's honor

    You guys dont know jack!

The huge handling difference will come from a lower center of gravity, lower roll center and the steam roller size tires, besides the engine moved back, being mounted lower from the dry sump and the lighter weight carbon fiber quarter panels. yadda yadda yadda vroooom...

Nick, I give you permission to buy one , but make sure that you also go to the Vette drivers school that is somewhere near Bakersfield.

If you want to order one, let me know. I have some advice about the process.

    Re: 2006 Vette Z06 price just announced - $65k

That price only buys a non-s 997. What do you do if your in the market and looking to spend 70k? Used 997s, new 997, or new Z06?

    Re: 2006 Vette Z06 price just announced - $65k

Do u want rolling thunder or a refined fast GT car? Wanna go scary fast (0-60 in 3.7 sec)and $200.00 tuneups? or,,,,
you do want staggering speed and refinement? I like them both,,,its hard to answer.

How about pristine 993TT, high-mileage 996TT, 993RS (import a Euro car), pristine 911 Turbo 3.6 (965), new Caterham CSR (fastest street-legal track car), etc...

    Re: 2006 Vette Z06 price just announced - $65k

65k is a great price (about where it should be for that type of car). However--- I would rather have a mid (meaning 35k40k miles) 996TT. A corvette maybe faster and it may be better on the track--- but the 996TT sounds a million x's better than a corvette, looks better IMO, and is all wheel drive (for those of us in the northeast.... we know that 500hp and a RWD car will spell problems on a rainy highway road).

    Re: 2006 Vette Z06 price just announced - $65k

Its best to own one of each. A new Z06 and a used 993 cab
will be about the same money as a loaded 997S.

You can have the best of both worlds, a killer 427 vette and a aircooled 911 with a motor as god intended.

If worried about snow, get C4 cab, they are friggin awesome on a snow country road with the top down.

    Re: 2006 Vette Z06 price just announced - $65k

thanks Grant, cant wait for prices and delivery date here in europe. my only concern tecnically speaking - for this car would be that it does not come with proper tires and therefore will not be able to sand up in copmarison to the 997gt3 etc. I guess it will come with the antipuncture goodyear eagles instead of something like the Pirelli P zero corsa. that would make a huge difference! what do you guys think?

    cheers

    Re: 2006 Vette Z06 price just announced - $65k

The previous Z06 came with normal tires while the regular C5 came with run-flats, so I expect this Z06 to come with normal tires as well Run flats are heavier and still don't handle like normal tires so they don't make sense in the Z06 after all they are going through to make it more explosive.

In the US, 65k is an incredible pricetag for what the Z06 offers and its not embarrasing to drive there. Howevere, here in Europe expect at least around $130-140 pricetag for the Z06 IMO. Quite ridiculous, but there is also the image thing you need to get over to drive one here It would be good dedicated track car but a bit pricey.

Corvettes have a bad reputation in Europe? Is it because of the price?

Corvette has indeed a bad reputation, price does not help, for sure, but mostly because they have en extremely cheap interior and so far, they have been mostly 0 to 60 kinda car, with very unsophisticated engineering (big cubic V8 with two valves per cylinder, etc.)
So the engineering is still rough around the edges engine wise with the current line up, but Corvette has put a lot of effort into the rest (chassis, handling, etc.) sadly, interior and assembly quality is still awful.
But it's changing and in the right direction. I'll take time though. If it makes it to the level of Porsche Ferrari etc in terms of image is not sure, we'll see.

    Re: 2006 Vette Z06 price just announced - $65k

No, its because of the image corvette has had in european view of cars. Its kind of considered a poseur old man in crisis's cheap car with no skills or knowledge who just wants a flashy straigh-line car with no taste or class. I know this is a stupid stereotype but thats the image it has.

And the Z06 is hardly a poseur car IMO (C6 is another matter and completely different car), sure its cheaply made with GM type build, with a front engine with lots of cc, plastic body panels, and flashy boy-racer looks but its effective and high performing, and a serious track car that will keep up with the best of them or even beat. Its not refined as a Porsche but its like a butcher knife vs a scalpel, both get the job do but in a different manner. And in the US, the Z06 will be a bargain at 65k, here its a different matter.

    Re: 2006 Vette Z06 price just announced - $65k

Thanks for the perspective. Too bad though that the Corvette has to be so expensive in Europe. It might be a hot seller if it didn't have that handicap. I know that even at 65K, I wouldn't be buying a Z06. So at 130-140K, I would definitely not.

The new Z06 does have runflat tires (probably to avoid law suits with their 200mph car). These are lousy in general, but they will be much improved with this newer version. Still, non-runflats will perform better. Just go out and burn up the runflats and buy different tires - shouldn't take very long with 505hp and 470 ft-lbs

    Re: 2006 Vette Z06 price just announced - $65k

Are you sure? no non-runflat option?, that is pathetic, fear of lawsuits forcing runflats on the new Z06 version? whats next the new 997GT3 and F430CS with runflats also?

Carlos - yes, you have to take the runflats - only the Goodyear Eagle Supercar F1 tires are available. And, there is no other brand or model that is produced in the necessary sizes in the aftermarket (yet).
