    Any surfers here?

As some of my close friends on this forum may know, one of my other passions is surfing. And although the two of them don't necessarily go together, cheking out spots with my 911 would be really great.
There is some awesome potential between Bordeaux, all the way down to Mundaka.
It is possible with the roof transport system and everyone knows that, as for as sports get, you can't find more practical.

My first question is: Is it easy to remove the roof transport bars? Like unscrewing a couple of screws et voila! Or do you need the dealer to install/ deinstall for you?
I know one of our member has that system I think and uses it for Mountain bikes. So should work for boards.

Second question and that's more of a concern, and it concerns modern cars in general which have electronic keys and integrated controller in the key.

If there are any surfers on this board, what solution do you come up with for the key?
    Surely it's not waterproof!
Can't leave it somewhere, too dangerous. The only times I've been surfing with my 911, I was with other people who would stay on the beach and hence keep the keys, but when I'm alone, I take the Toyota 4WD which has an old school key I can put around my neck and surf with.

I know this is slightly OT but any advice greatly appreciated, thanks in advance. :t

    Re: Any surfers here?

    I am a surfer
The new electronic keys and integrated controller in the key is really a problem you can not wear them around your neck during surfing
I always hide my key in the sand and take care no one can see my hinding the key.
I kwow the are some special waterproof key holders to waer around your neck but I never saw a place where i can buy them

    Re: Any surfers here?

Surfer too, I always put the key on the front tire... oops, did I say that up loud?

    Re: Any surfers here?

What is very easy to install Fargo?

    Thanks for the responses guys.
I have actually just been looking on the web and there seems to be some waterproof mini bags available out there so there's hope.
I hide my key in the tyre or bumper as well Zurich but somehow with a cheap Toyota, it's ok, not quite the same with a 911 if someone sees you hiding the key!
Also, how about the easyness of removing the transport bars? Is it done quickly?
Clearly you can't drive fast with the board on the roof, but once stored at the hotel or whatever, tt'd be nice to easily get rif of those ungracefyl transport bars to go for a spin.

    Re: Any surfers here?

Doesn't the car come with a plastic simple key? One that fits into wallet and is not water sensitive?

    Re: Any surfers here?

Last April I was in Pozo Grand Canaria A car was stolen while the owner surfing and hide his key under the car.
Locals were are looking for guys hiding the key in the car area

Picture off the Pozo parking area

    Re: Any surfers here?

Those little twist-seal bags are ideal, you just push it together and turn the little knobs. They're good enough to take a mobile phone too, very handy if you need the coastguard.

Yes absolutely, well, on my 996 at least, so it should be the same on the 997 but I wonder of it's not one of those tricky keys with electronic chip inside them or whatever? Especially since ignition on the 997 is now electronic.
Still, if you find a waterproof mini pocket, that key would take less place in the swintrunks anyway!
Only thing on the 996 when you open the car with the key manually, you have 10 secs (or something like that) to put ignition on. Dunno if it's the same on the 997?

    Re: Any surfers here?

This is from Sumba island, Indonesia last year and no it's not me, I was behind the camera!

    Great find thank you!

    Re: Any surfers here?

You can get them here in the UK too Fanch, I bought one locally when I did some Kitesurfing, that American site was the only one I could dig up on the quick though!

    Re: Any surfers here?

Just put the key in a little baggie and bury it close to your stuff.

    Re: Any surfers here?

    I'm a bodyboarder.

I used the spare key of my 986 (the one without the opening buttons but with the supposed chip inside) many times around my neck and it never stopped working. It's strange because the key starts the car and I really thought I was going to ruin it when taking it to the water.

I must have got it into the water many dozen times and when I've sold the car it was still starting it without any problem

With my 987 I've not yet tried the spare key because I've had tons of things to do lately and haven't had the "rush" to go get some waves.

    Re: Any surfers here?

What's wrong with this cheap&quick storage method?

    Re: Any surfers here?

Not bad and cheap! I'll tell you what, you try it first and let me know how's your key doing?
stevens, thanks for sharing your experience, but I still think the 996/986 was a normal key whereas the 997/987 key has some electronic wizardy in it! Not sure though.

    Re: Any surfers here?

Half an hour later, after passing my sink test, the poor memory card rests in my camera
