Any word on the TS (Coupe and Cab)? And when? Also, see my post on 996 Turbo Board re. using the 996TSCab as a "stopgap" until the 997TSCab is out. Thanks.

    Re: 997 Turbo

wow 480hp is a lot more compared to the stock hp of the old 996 with only 420hp

And the onlyporsche.net rumour is 525HP for the TS. Just don't over-bloat it like a merc sl65amg.

    Re: 997 Turbo

it could be !! as hp difference between the 996 tt and the tts was 30, why can't the difference between the new tt and tts be 45?

    Re: 997 Turbo

Now that that is settled the real question is how will it perform?
It will be really interesting to see how it will do against a competitor that costs half as much.

    Name one...

    Re: 997 Turbo

The 480 HP should be accurate but we heard around 510 HP for a possible Turbo S and/or GT2.
As far as we heard, the 997 Turbo engine is based on the "old" design, it actually is a refined version of the GT2 MkII engine which delivers 483 HP.
Only the capacity will be raised to 3.8 l.

A Turbo Cab is expected around 6-12 months after Turbo Coupe introduction, a Turbo S should be available starting with MY 2009 (summer 2008, maybe slightly earlier).
Don't expect a Turbo S too soon if 997 Turbo sales go well.
A big mystery still remains with the rumored 997 GT2.

Regarding the 997 GT3: it would be a bad decision if Porsche would choose the 997 Carrera S M97 engine for the GT3. But it can't be excluded. Somebody who saw a 997 GT3 from a closer distance, said that the car had PSM and the Chrono Sport package (yes, it was a GT3).
So maybe Porsche wanted to save money and squeezed 400-408 HP out of the M97 engine. No problem to do that, the powerkit engine already delivers 381 HP.

BUT (regarding the 3.8 l engine for the GT3): rumours have it that the new 997 Turbo will get a 3.8 l engine too, so maybe there is still some hope regarding a REAL dry sump lubrification system on the GT3.

    Re: 997 Turbo

Very interesting, RC. So you're pretty certain that the turbo will get a dry-sump motor but unsure about the GT3? I thought it would be the other way round.

You mentioned a while ago that you saw the interior of the 997tt with an unusual gearstick, possibly DSG, I hope Porsche is still serious about it. Any new info?

    Thanks RC,

510HP still sounds like a good number. But summer 2008 as a MY2009 for the TS? Arghhhh!

Maybe that 996TSCab 2005 all black (with carbon fiber package) will be needed more than ever. . . .

    Re: 997 Turbo

MY09 is the 997TTS, Al, the 997TT should be out next year.

If you're interested in a 996TT S Cab, All Black w/ Carbon fiber I saw the below car on the floor at Brandywine. They're at $10k off MSRP. I went there considering to buy it but went with a 997 S cab instead. I realized buying a Turbo S Cab. now with hopes of getting into the 997 Turbo when it first comes out isn't a smart move. $$$ wise.

    Re: 997 Turbo

    Here's the interior.

    Re: 997 Turbo

    RC,

Thanks for the update on the GT3. Do you have any sense or idea of when do you believe the GT3 will be launched? It would seem logical that Porsche would introduce this after the Turbo, do you agree?

    Yep Danny G,

I'm still interested in the 997TT as the "S" in Cab form, if I hold out for it, so it might be a few years if RC is accurate.

    Re: 997 Turbo

    Awesome Stradale,

It looks like the same combo. my local dealer has. I'll check the Porsche dealer's website to see if the options list is similar (I'll need heated seats for the winter ). I want to see how low I can get my local dealer to go down from MSRP. BTW, what's your opinion re. carbon fiber? I'm going over to my dealer tomorrow evening for a peek.

This would be at odds with the rumour that a 998 (911) will be released in MY2008. Gut tells me you are right.

Got the part about the 997TTCab - 6 months out from the 997TT coupe (that follows what they have done with the 997Scoupe/cab, 9974Scoupe/cab). How about the launch date of the 997TT ? Either when it will be announced or when the order guide will be out ?

ps: I totally agree about the TT S. It wouldn't make any sense to release an S version so quick. It took 4 years for the 996TT S to come out.

    Re: 997 Turbo

If the 997tt starts hitting dealers summer 06' as many in-the-know have suggested then we should get an official announcement and pictures around the end of this year.

The deviated stitching is in Silver. Doors & Seats. IMO it looks awesome. I really like the carbon fiber. I'm a big fan of CF. My CS is drapped in the stuff. It has the standard exhaust tips which I like much better on the TT because they fit to the bottom of the bumper better then the fake double tube chrome tips. It also has IMO THE BEST wheels going. The painted GT Silver wheels. You can't really tell from the pick but they are darker then the regular Turbo wheel. Between the darker wheel and the CCM's gives the car a mean, custom look.

They came off $10k on the phone before any type of negotiation. My guess is there would be only a thousand or two max. from there. I almost bought the car, if money was no issue and I didn't already have a Black 996TT I might have. I bought a 997 S cab. My next Porsche is going to be the 997 TT Cab. (I gave my deposit in March) New 997 cab's will definately depreciate less in a years time then new 996 cab's. Turbo or not.

I saw you mentioned using the Turbo in the snow. When I bought my 996 TT I thought it would be great because I could use the 4-wheel drive in the winter too. I never took the car out when there was any risk of snow. Funny way how your thinking about using the car in the snow changes once you have the beauty.

If you decide to go with the S- good luck with the car. It's a great machine.

That seems to be the consensus. The Turbo Cab. is going to be sick.

    Thanks again Stradale,

I would probably use the 996TSCab occasionally in winter (I have a tuned up Audi S4-I flashed the engine and changed the cats/exhausts/downpipes and added a short shifter-I haven't dynoed it but it probably makes about 400HP and did great this past winter, so I'd use that more regularly in the snow), as I could not see myself letting it sit there 4-6 months motionless in the garage, so on snow-free days I'd have to drive it-then I'd wash it to get the salt off of it.

I'll keep you updated if I go for it. I think I'm going to hold out for the 997TSCab rather than settle for the TCab so that wait might be long, and the 996TSCab could "bridge the gap."

    Re: 997 Turbo

2 new pieces of info on the 997 TT:

the engine will definitely be a 3.8.

the 997TT might be the first petrol car in the world with VGT (variable geometry turbocharger). this means more torque over a broader range and higher power output!

    cheers

    Re: 997 Turbo

I've heard about those variable vane turbos (like variable pitch blades on a helicopter). It sounds like there's a great potential increase in performance to be realized there, but there are sure to be some teething problems at first.

A company has used these on BMW M3's for awhile with a pretty spotty reliability record...

It's all about " area under the curve " on a dyno graph , not just peak HP . If the 997 Turbo has both a 3.8 dry sump motor ( would jive with the GT3 motor rumor ) and VGT, real world performance could be much better than it's rumored 480 peak HP rating would lead one to believe .

    Re: 997 Turbo

the reason why no car nanufacturer has used these kind of turbos yet on a petrol engine is as follows: the temperatures of the petrol engines are about 150-200 Celsius higher than the most sophisticated diesel engines they run on now. anyone who would try to take an actual diesel VGT and bolt it on a petrol unit would have it fried. this would obviously apply to an M3 engine.

this will therefore very probably be a worldwide first for porsche!

and please consider that we now know that gt3 and TT will be 3.8. still doesnt answer the question which engine it's gonna be (my hunch and wish is the dry sump!)

    cheers

    Re: 997 Turbo

I guess the Nm increase will be at least about 20%, so instead of 560 we will be at 650-700, close to the AMG kompressors (which by the way need up to 60 hp just to feed themselves, so they are totally inefficient!).
the TT will be a bombshell performancewise. it will tear the tarmac - F430 brace yourself!!

    cheers

ps: the variable vanes tech is a proven tech with many very succesful applications on turbodiesels here in europe!

    Re: 997 Turbo

I'll always take the " power " of one Porsche " horse " against anyone else's when it come to " official " power ratings .

Coooooool! Or should I say inter(cool)ed!

    I'm up from #4 to #3 on my dealer's 997TT list!

    Turbolite,

Any word on strategies for getting the tranny to accomodate that much torque? And what about the sequential manual?
