    Flat tire repair

    can the tires on the 997S be repaired from a small nail in the mid section of tire? Dealer does not suggest repairing due to voiding the speed rating.

    If it were me in your spot... I'd change the tire so I don't have to think about its integrity...especially tires that are low profiles for sports cars.

    There's a thread on this somewhere. It's P's policy to say replace it.(what would you expect) But, someone else said that it can be easily plugged and it doesn't affect its integrity. I'd plug it personally.

    I agree and I have personally plugged many tires myself and driven them at high speed without incident. But, that was back when I was young and stupid and I wouldn't do it again. Not on a tire that I patched. I didn't do a bad job of patching, probably superior to the typical gas station plug/patch job in fact, but I am more careful now and I will no longer drive at high speed on the patch/plug you typically see.

    I have now seen really good plugs though, installed by a competent tire guy and I would have no problems driving fast on tires that he patched. What I saw was a combination plug/patch installed from inside the tire. This type of repair, when done properly, should maintain the tire's speed rating. See this article: --click here--

    I've always had hot cars always had plugs with inside patches on tires that involved simple puncture in non-critical area. Never had any problems afterward.

    I don't do 100-150 mph speeds for sustained periods because I want to keep my license. I figure a blown tire below my typical 70-80 highway speeds is not gonna happen due to a simple puncture properly patched (or even improperly patched). If it were to happen at 75mph: big deal, I think I can handle that.

    Again, your call, I must have had ten or twenty of these patches over 27 years of driving: never had an incident.

    Think of the USA highways; there has to be billions of patches over the past decades: no national outcry has resulted over lawsuits and accidents related to patching.

    True enough! And if that's the speeds we're talking about, I think almost any decent patch/plug job will work, just as long as it's holding air.

    There may be those here however who are contemplating higher speeds, say 150 mph or above. I'm just suggesting that those drivers be more cautious about the quality of the repair and assure themselves that the tire's speed rating is not compromised.

    Oh yeah!! DEFINITELY! Any compromise can be deadly. You guys know better than I but at speeds around 150mph the amount of energy involved is some surprising multiple of that at 60mph? Only perfect equipment makes any sense at that end.
