    New Cheap Entry Level Boxster?

According to one of our sources, there has been a new 987 engine spotted in Zuffenhausen, power output is supposed to be 211 HP.
We don't know if this engine will be used for an entry level Boxster or even Cayman but it seems Porsche wants to serve the "low end" market too.

This is NOT official, it may just be a rumour.

Re: New Cheap Entry Level Boxster?

For some reason I tend to believe your rumours :-)
Oh well, the first boxst in 97 was 204...i guess the 2.5L is back :-)

Re: New Cheap Entry Level Boxster?

I lived with the 200bhp 2.5L engine for 4 years (99-03) and I don't think Porsche is going to go that route again (down the upstaircase to reverse a paraphrase!). I will venture this will be a 4 cylinder high reving engine for a light weight coupe (Cayman) or Boster with a manual top to save weight and cost, but without any CS designation. This will really establish a low end distinct from the Boxster/Cayman lineage even if there will be commonality of parts or even chasis.

Re: New Cheap Entry Level Boxster?

I thought Porsche had already stated that there would not be a car priced below the (current) standard Boxster. Just something to consider.

Re: New Cheap Entry Level Boxster?

    Good one, Danny! LOL!!!

Re: New Cheap Entry Level Boxster?

I dont like the idea of a cheaper Boxster....

If it was cheaper but some kind of CS with smaller power unit but all the nicetys removed to get power to weight back up then fine.

But the idea of bringing in a sub Pounds30k Boxster doesnt appeal!!! There is enough of them on the road already!!!

Re: New Cheap Entry Level Boxster?

Just to add some thoughts about this topic :
RC I think you already know that Porsche still produces 2.7 L engine with reduced power for belgian market.
In this complete mad country, they are so taxed on powerful engines, thta they have decreased the output of 2.7 L engine to approx 212 CV. Hence if you have bought a 2.7 L engine in 2002 or 2004, it remains always at 212 CV , funny isn't it.
I think this motor is always for this "niche" market.
I don't really see the interest of P

I don't really see the interest of Porsche to do such a motor otherwise.
NB : the selling price was the same for a "fake 2.73 WITH 212 HP and a 2.7 L with 228 CV in France.
    What a stupid legislation !!!

They actually said that there won't be an entry-level model priced below their current entry-level model, the Boxster. They didn't say Boxster 2.7 or Boxster S, just the current Boxster. A Boxster with 211 HP instead of 240 HP could be sold for let's say 5000-7000 Euro less. It would surely be a nice offer to fight the competition from the SLK, Z4 and Audi TT.

Re: New Cheap Entry Level Boxster?

    so now it will be like that for the flat 6: 2.5 211hp, 2.7 240hp, 3.2 280hp, 3.6 325hp, 3.8 355hp, 3.8p 380hp, 3.6 380+hp, 3.6tt whateverhp, 3.6tt whatever hp POWERKIT X50...PORSCHE thats too many.

RC, as someone said, the 211bhp version is on sale in Belgium. The 986 was already available with 211bhp for tax reasons. They did it again with the 987. Actually, both version of the 2.7l are sold in Belgium. You can get the 240bhp or the 211bhp version. (you save 2500 Euro on taxes if you go for the 211bhp)

By the way, the 211 bhp version is 600 Euro more expensive than the 240 bhp version. Why? Because it's made specially for the belgian market so it increases the cost of the car.

I seem to remember 911 owners saying something similar when the Boxster was first mooted.

I know, 7 sec. from 0-100 kph and 250 kph top speed for the 211 HP version. But this is a version for the Belgian market only, you're right.
The engine spotted in Zuffenhausen apparently was running specification for the german market and other markets. So there are actually two possibilities (plain speculation of course): Porsche plans to offer the same engine (maybe with other mods too, to make a 240 HP "retrofit" impossible) for other markets too or this is a completely new development with the same displacement and power but maybe more torque and less production cost.

We just have to wait and see, I just wanted to pass on this information, I thought it may be interesting.

It really is interesting if it's true. I still don't understand why Porsche would do that though. Maybe ther's a demand from "posers" who just want a porsche to look at it and be seen as driving one. Why not put a VW engine in it then, like the old 924

I always hated the 211 bhp version for the belgian market. With the 986, the difference was not much but now, you lose 29 bhp wich is a lot. In a Belgian review, they said the car (211 bhp) was feeling less aggressive, less sporty due to the lack of power at higher revs. Stupid tax makers
