Why did you choose your colour?

I see a lot of debate about which colour looks better so I thought I would start a thread about it

I own a guards red 986 + black interior + black hood. I bought it off the showroom floor because I needed another car quickly (wrote off my previous car in an accident a few days before). When I went car shopping, I had in mind a dark blue colour - perhaps midnight blue or lapis with a cream yellow leather interior.

I brought a friend along and when we saw the GR 986 at the dealers he immediately fell for it. He had always pooh-pooh'ed my idea for a dark coloured Porsche. He said "if you get a Toyota you get a dark colour. If you get a Ford it's a dark blue. Why do you want to spend so much money on a Porsche and not have it stand out?"

I still didn't like it at first - I thought the GR was a bit too loud, a bit too garish. I'm a fairly low key kind of guy and I didn't think it would suit my personality.

I returned to the dealer the next day and looked at the car again. Then something magical happened - it looked back at me and suddenly I could see the great old Porsches of the past. At that very moment I realized I was wrong and a dark blue colour for my Porsche would be wrong. A little seed was planted in my head when I was a kid and taken for a ride in my dad's friend's new 911. It was guards red with a black interior - just like mine now.

I bought it and I won't have another Porsche in any other colour.

Re: Why did you choose your colour?

great story amfibius, i don't really have a specific colour taste, it just depends on what colours i already have in my garage at home, so i pic something else just to give it a bit of contrast

Re: Why did you choose your colour?

    Similaar story to mine, Amfibius.
I thought long and hard about the colour. It's my first Porsche, and a lot of money.
I thought about silver and seal as 'safe' colours for resale etc. Eventually family persuaded me that black looks best. So, set of to the dealers to order black/black/black.
When we got there they had aa red 987 in the showroom.
Immediately the childhood dreaam of a red, soft-top Porsche came back to me.
The heart ruled and I ordered red. This may be my one and only chance for a new Porsche. Bought the dream.
Had it 10 days now. No regrets whatsoever.

Re: Why did you choose your colour?

    I got Cobalt because:

    1. It is an amazing color.

    2. It stands outs, and it is not black, white, silver, etc

    3. I have yet to run into another Cobalt on the road.

I actually get more compliments on the color than the car.

Re: Why did you choose your colour?

Nice Story and an even better pic!

Re: Why did you choose your colour?

Amfibius: are you a photographer in your free time? they're great pictures. do you have many more pictures of this kind?

Re: Why did you choose your colour?

    Yes, great photo

Re: Why did you choose your colour?

schmuy I am actually a doctor. Photography is my hobby. There are more pictures in my webpage:

    http://www.pbase.com/amfibius/my_porsche&page=all

But I don't want to take this thread too far off topic, we can discuss photography in another thread

Sorry for the double post of my image - I wasn't too familiar with how the forums worked. After entering the VBCode for my image I saw that it did not show up - so I went back and uploaded the picture. Now I can't go back and edit it

Re: Why did you choose your colour?

some really good photo's amfibius, did you use photoshop in any of the pictures?

Re: Why did you choose your colour?

I've been thinking about this a lot lately as I am contemplating a new Cayman (Boxster coupe if you prefer/insist). My 99 Boxster was Ocean Jade w/ a gra;phite grey interior. Wife and I both thought it stood out and very much resembled the color of the ocean water over the local reefs. of course there are numerous posts regarding what constitutes a "man" color or a "chick" color or a "gay" color. I find it interesting that Porsche offered 37 colors in 1973 and today, in our supposedly enlighted and liberated times, we see only 12 or so mostly dark and very conservative colors. In any case I am contemplating Mexico Blue or Diamond Blue metallic for the Cayman. I know that 4300 USDs is a lot for a paint color, but 60K for a car is already a lot anyway. Cobalt is definitely on the list.I think a Porsche should be distinctive. I may not be ready for lime green (although I was in 1973 when I saw a 914 in that color), but I think that white/black/silver are a little too mundane. By the way the website www.paintscratch.com lists the Porsche colors available for any given year for those that maybe interested.

Re: Why did you choose your colour?

I'd never bought a Porsche before, and my wife is more conservative than I am as regards to appearance, so we ordered Arctic Silver. But I completely agree that if you want a car that stands out a little more you should get it. We all kind of poked fun at the article Jim Flat 6 posted a few weeks ago about a lady that ordered a flaming pink Boxster, but from reading the article I think she really loves that car. Somehow ordering a color that doesn't appeal to everyone else makes the car more "yours" somehow.

Anyway, as long as you are prepared to pay more now and get less if you ever sell it, then why not?

All my photos have gone through photoshop, mainly to do a curves and channels adjustment and maybe clone out a few distracting elements like street furniture. No major PS'ing otherwise.

Re: Why did you choose your colour?

Have my 2003 Boxster S in black. Previous one in was in silver, but that looked too "nice".., black looks more agressive

My 05 Boxster is silver, because I am a "nice" person. Assuming grey is half way between black and silver, are those that have seal unsure whether they are nice people or not? Ente - you must be real bad with your triple black

Re: Why did you choose your colour?

I used to be agressive, but now I'm not so sure.

Maybe the overall agressiveness of the look of car+driver remains constant. Perhaps manly types have to buy silver to tone themselves down, and people buy black to compensate for their lack of manliness?

Re: Why did you choose your colour?

I'm a big fan of black cars and my 996 TT is black too. So it was an easy choice for me.

Re: Why did you choose your colour?

Bought used, so choice a lot more limited. Was trying to find a Lapis with the savanna interior but every one I found had been sold. Eventually went to dealer to see what they had - they are Audi/Porsche dealers and I had seen them with offers on 05 TT Roadsters (had an 01 TT coupe so some interest) Whilst there had a look on the used lot and found the 02 Boxster S I eventually bought but also tried a 99 911 convertible and the TT roadster. Bought Black (metallic) on black and no regrets. Yeah it takes time to keep it clean and here in Houston it can get a bit warm during the summer so have learn't not to jump straight in when I have shorts on but. Thinking now even if I were to order a new one it would be black.

Re: Why did you choose your colour?

I prefer black exterior with (light) grey interior when I can get it. That is... when I don't fall prey to the sudden purchase urge. The light grey interior strikes me as classy, nicely offsetting the aggressive black outside. My Boxster was originally ordered in that combination too, until the "must buy now" syndrom struck and I came home with my triple black dirty girl. Various dark grey shades were among the other possible color choices, but in the end, the good gorgeous black won.

Re: Why did you choose your colour?

I have had a lot of comments from bystanders that it does look so aggressive in the triple black. I think more so since I took the badge of the rear trunk. But pretty much everybody has said that black is the only way to go.

Re: Why did you choose your colour?

Black is sooo last week. Have you seen what those folks at TVR are doing with fur effect paint? Simply stunning! And so tactile, all the ladies will want to stroke it.

Just don't take it though the car-wash.

    Sorry... must be the heatwave.

IMHO black scratches easily and shows chips, and is hard to keep clean.

Re: Why did you choose your colour?

Didn't say black was easy to keep, it is a maintenance intensive colour but for me worth it.
And I do agree about TVR, they have been doing wonders with the paintwork.
And I am deliberately staying away from the stroking comment.

Re: Why did you choose your colour?

The top reason for chosing black is the fact that so many parts of a car's exterior are black anyway (tires, plastic etc.). To me choosing black as an exterior color makes all these black plastic parts look more "integrated" into the overall car design.

The interior color of my 987 is stonegrey/black bi-color full leather.
