What damage did I do?

Car stalled at traffic lights. Got it started accelerated away and heard a bang. Looked in the mirror and saw smoke billowing from the right exhaust. Check coolant light came on. By now I was stopped and the car quickly switched off.

The cooland line has seperated at a connector on the right hand side of the engine bay. What I don't know is what damage may have been done to the engine....Car has 1500 miles only. Called Porsche and had the car towed to the dealer in Indianapolis.

My day was finally capped by the farcical goings on at the F1 Grand Prix...

So have I damaged my engine? And what caused the coolant line to seperate?

Hard to say. It's not like you were running it for a long time without coolant. The dealer should be able to diagnose the extent of damage soon enough.

My amateur opinion (not being born yesterday) is, if it's just a hose that popped off you're probably okay as far as lasting damage is concerned. You shut it down very quickly so I'm betting no problem. Don't forget the engine oil does alot to keep things cool too.

Indicates to me the DEALER (or Porsche stateside preparation center, if they have one like BMW does) didn't do their job. They are supposed to go around and tighten stuff from top top bottom and front to back.

That blows. I certainly hope you're not stuck in Indy either...especially after the F1 fiasco.

I agree that if the coolant ran out and the engine was on for only a shirt time, there should not be any significant damage. Why did the engine stall in the 1st place? I assume it was white smoke?

Did you feel or notice anything different before the stall?

luckily you are still covered by warranty! hopefully there isn't any serious damage, it just seems that your dealer did not do a proper overall inspection of the car before handing it over to you. hope the problem is resolved quicky

same opinion: hopefully no real damage in the engine, and smoke probably coming from the coolant spread over hot engine parts

I started thinking last night, if the car stalled *first* THEN blew the pipe off, it might be really BAD. Sorry to think this.

Either way Porsche will fix it for you.

When did you lose the coolant ?
Did it come out while you were stopped or did you lose the coolant prior to noticing the problem, and then the car stalled ?

Car stalled. Bang. Smoke. Then coolant loss indicator lit up.

Dealer in Indy called me to say that after checking the car over the only thing they could find was the blown coolant line, and no signs from checking the car's vitals that any damage had been done to the engine. That coolant line and offending c-clip have been fixed and will be checked once more tomorrow and the car shipped back to me sometime this week.
