You've talked me into it
My original post "You've talked me out of it" created a bit of a controvesy. After much soul searching I've decided to go ahead and buy the 997S for the following reasons:
1) Flames. I'm not sure which was the one that changed my viewpoint, but perhaps it was the one that encouraged me to cancel my order so there would be more cars for other people. Up until that point I hadn't realized that Porsche only made a finite number of vehicles, and my taking one would prevent someone else from getting one. I always wanted a limited edition car, and didn't realize that by buying the 997S I was getting one. Count me in!
2) Negativity of forums. I learned that all forums are negative by nature, because who wants to talk about how good something is? I hadn't thought of that, and immediately cancelled my involvement in all those weird forums I've been on where everyone talks about how much they enjoy their purchases and shares their positive experiences with them.
3) Cost. This was a big concern of mine, but now I've learned that I'll only lose 50% of my money in the first 3 years of ownership, and it's only $20,000 the first year, so I figure what the heck. If I invested it I could lose a lot more, just look at Enron.
4) Reliability. Since so many older Porsches have been so reliable I've been urged to ignore the recent plummet in reliability that Porsche has had in the numerous surveys I've seen. I was wrongly thinking that perhaps something had changed at Porsche, oh, say, an entirely new management philosophy, production method, and parts suppliers. But apparently a once reliable car is always reliable, and owners of newer Mercedes are just a bunch of whiners (which fits with the comments in the Merc forums). I asked my grandfather what cars were reliable, and he said he's always been an Oldsmobile man.
5) What else is there? I was asked this a lot, so I looked and it turns out that there aren't any other sports cars / GTs made with EXACTLY the same performance as the Porsche. There were some that were close, but none that were exzctly the same. The S2000 looked good on the spec, but was $50K cheaper. The M3 was a tenth of a second less on the skidpad. Ferrari had some contenders, but I'll be darned if they weren't faster 0-60! I couldn't find one other car that was exactly the same as the 911S. The Vantage was close, very close, but it's made in England, not Germany. Close, but no cigar.
6) I'd lose my deposit. Hey, a thousand is a thousand, and I would indeed lose that. Better to spend an extra $84K than lose one
For all these reasons I'm going ahead and getting the car, even though I don't want it and will trade it in immediately for that new Oldsmobile.
Happy April 1st!
