    Beautiful day

Well, the weather held out for us, and I dragged Ente, RichC and J on a brief tour of West Dorset. Nice to see the three cars in convoy. Dreamcar you were missed!

I think RichC and Ente will hopefully post some pics later.

I think it has come the time of year where the weather is sunny, and this of course brings out the slow 'Sunday Drivers', so progress was often held up, giving us a chance to enjoy the open topped cuise through the countryside, birdsong mixing with the throaty sounds of the flat 6.

Indeed I think the noise of the exhaust makes your passage seem speedier than it actually is - a couple of cyclists we carefully crept past waved their fist and told us to 'slow down'... we were only doing 30-35 on the 60 limited road.

So Ente and RichC met up with us in the ghost-town that is Poundbury, Prince Charles' new picture-postcard town that is the expansion of the Dorest town of Dorchester. Nice architecture, and very 'quaint', but very soul-less for some reason. The only active townsfolk were the pigeons that perched above our open cars and made us nervous. At least Ente carries leather cleaner.

Dorchester is famed for it's Thomas Hardy literary connection, but also linked to two other Thomas Hardy(e)s - one an industrialist, the other a naval officer. The naval officer had a tower built on top of a hill to celebrate his kiss with Admiral Nelson (Whose last words were alledgedly 'Kiss me Hardy'). There's a great view of Dorchester, the sea, and a row of three Boxsters from the top of the tower. We did hope it didn't start to rain while we were up-top.

    Cont...

    Re: Beautiful day

    ...Cont

From the tower we dived down to the coast, through the picturesque narrow stone-walled streets of the village of Abbotsbury (where there are baby swans, apparently), along the coast road by Chesil Beach (Where Barnes Wallace tested his prototpe Bouncing Bombs for his Dam-Busters) to the beach at Burton Bradstock. Sand does get everywhere!

Our line of three, parked overlooking the sea, attracted admiring looks from a Mazda MX5 owner taking advantage of the good wheather to take a tour of his own from oop-north down to Devon.

Getting rather hungry now, so we skipped ice-creams on the beach to make it to the pub before they stopped serving food. After a brief crawl behind the local antique tractor owners club, who also chose today for their meet we finally found some tourist-free road to blast along, narrow and twisty, so quite fun. You do sometimes feel the width of the Boxster on roads like this.

News of our presense must have spread, as we got a police escort to see the famed Cerne Abbas Giant (aka 'Willy Man'), the well-endowed chalk figure cut into the hillside. Recent research has proposed the theory that he is actually a deliberately offensive caricature of Oliver Cromwell, sketched in the hill by Denzil Holles during the Civil War in the seventeenth century.

The Royal Oak in Cerne Abbas, still shrouded in scaffolding due to a nasty ourbreak of Death Watch Beetle in the ancient roof-beams, offered us a cosy welcome, and food at last, then Ente and Rich hit the road back London-bound in search of a drink for their thirsty steeds.

Rich, hope you found fuel, and look forward to your pics when you get chance to shrink 'em onto the board. Thanks Ente for making it down. Good to see you all! Hope you enjoyed the day.

So who's organising the next one then?

    Re: Beautiful day

Pleased to hear you all had a great day out. Me, on the other hand was at my mother-in-law's in Burgess Hill Did have a great drive there and back, along the A272 Winchester - Midhurst - Petworth (the flat 6 sound echoing off the narrow streets has to be heard to be believed), - Billingshurst. Mad Swiss in a 996 C4S- what is about rear engined Porsche drivers that having a Boxster in front of them is like a red rag to a bull . Did sound rather nice as he roared past with sports exhaust bellowing.

    Sorry - I interupted you mid-post. Now re-entered.

    Re: Beautiful day

Sounds like you had a fun day too! Sometimes we have to do what we're told though Quite a few Porsches on the roads down here too today, though I think the roads are far too tiny for much overtaking. That's Dorset for you! It's nice to have a road that's reasonably fun to drive at the legal limit. Don't know how Rich and Ente found them? It's OK for me, I drive them regularly. I think I scared a squirrel.

Coming from a Golf, I'm still getting used to the very different drive of a Boxster, and some of the uneven twisty road surfaces do make you feel nervous sometimes. I'm still working out how much to trust the car. I really need to get on a skills course sometime.

I am thinking of a New Forest Meet, perhaps taking in the National Motor Museum at Beaulieu, somewhere to look at the Solent & Isle of Wight and a nice friendly pub for lunch. Unfortunately the one I would have used, which we have for a long time, the Travellers Rest in Hythe I have had a major falling out with, having been served probably the worst most overpriced food in my life. (We walked out and refused to pay). So I need to find another watering hole.

I thought September would be best for that, after most of the Grockles have gone home.

I know exactly what you mean. I find I park about 1 metre off the kerb, I'm so worried about damaging those expensive wheels. My daily drive is a Focus Diesel, so getting in the Boxster is bit like going from a Piper to Concorde

    Re: Beautiful day

Thanks for the tour WTSnet. Besides the fun of meeting Mr. & Mrs. WTSnet and RichC and adoring the landscape along the way, one of the highlights was for three Boxsters to chase a police car through the countryside. Cheers to RichC for letting me trail along to the meeting point. Boxey power!

Some pictures (still having camera problems.. horrible quality, sowwy):

Poundbury, where we met up in or outside of the (closed!) Octagon cafe.

The tower (how many stair steps can one Boxster driver master before fainting?):

After the physical exertion (where we gained new friends by having RichC shout down the stairways "The towertop is closed, we apologize!" into the face of an emerging, exhausted family of 4 who just made it to the top), we went on to the Dorset coast:

Due to the gender majority of ladies present at this meet, we also got to see Andy's much-quoted "well endowed chappie":

Good fun! Oh, and we talked about getting a map and seeing if we can find some interesting roundab... roads around the London area. Due to the traffic situation, we will have to meet on a Sunday at latest 6am to move at a speed faster than a bicycle though.

    Re: Beautiful day

Nice piccies - just one more - those tight country lanes... who said it always rains in the UK

    Great day guys...

    Re: Beautiful day

    Cool photos Ente, Rich!

    Re: Beautiful day

Cracking pictures - I especially like the "aerial" shot looking down on the three Boxsters. (Needed an arctic silver one there, I feel ) Still, next time I WILL disobey orders to be with you all.

    Re: Beautiful day

Is it just me, or do mine and Rich's Seals look slightly different colours?

    Re: Beautiful day

Definitely missing the silver one in there. Also notice the black Boxster which cannot park in line with the others *coughs* The easiest way to ensure participation for Dreamcar is to have him plan the next meet

    Re: Beautiful day

hey! nice pictures! are all the 987S got PASM??? just wondering

    Re: Beautiful day

Ente's (Black) has PASM and 19"
Mine (Seal/Sand) has PASM and 18"
    Rich's (Seal/Black) has standard suspension and 19"

Parking: You're just a perfectionist Ente! I like a little mess.

Meet: Seconded - I think Dreamcar has volunteered for the next one... in September?

Unless anyone wants to do one in-between?

    Re: Beautiful day

did you drive their cars too wtnets??

wondering what are the feels of the 3 different setup
    19"PASM
    18"PASM
    19"standard

I think it is my car that was missed, not me Anyway, yes I will organise one for September, but I am going to have to think hard about photo-locations to match the Dorset ones. Most of the New Forest is 40mph, as well.

Drive their Boxsters? That's like asking to sleep with their partners! (However I don't think Mr Ente is my type )

And not insured to do so anyway...

I don't know if it's just me (I'm very new to sportscars) but I feel that if I am driving along slowly with PASM off, then nail it along a slightly bumpy road on a gentle bend, the suspension seems to tighten up leading to instability in the back end as you skip over the mid-bend bumps.

I don't know if this is just me - I'm still getting used to the handling difference between this and a MkIV Golf - Or if the PASM is making the handling worse by stiffening up too much when you nail the throttle, and it might be better on the same road with the standard suspension.

Like I said, it's all new to me - I'm still learning. On the roads round here, there isn't much room to play as the roads are quite narrow. It would be so easy to end up in a hedge so I tend to err on the side of caution.

    Locations: We aim to please

New Forest 40mph: Well, I guess a wild boar or deer would make more of a mess of the front of the car than a squirrel, so 40mph is probably sensible! We do have pheasants and badgers though. Pheasants have NO road sense at all!

You're right, the peasants are awful!!! Oh, you said pheasants - ignore that last comment!

    Re: Beautiful day

Switching cars is not thar easy here in the UK for insurance reasons. For example, my insurance covers only my husband and me driving the Boxster. But I can tell you that I tried the twisties in three configurations, in my car:

Standard setup (sports chrono "off", PASM "off"/normal)
    Sports chrono active, PASM "off"/normal
Sports chrono active, PASM in sports mode

Generally the car feels more responsive with the sports chrono active. Except for heavy city traffic, I don't want to miss it anymore. Accelerating onto a motorway or overtaking without sports chrono mode seems to miss OOMPH. In addition, I was surprised to find that the more challenging the road became, the more I was tempted to flip the PASM switch into the active mode. The body movement on these hilly, narrow, British C roads at 50+ mph is fairly significant, which I could feel in my own car and observe in WTSnet's Boxster who was leading the group. Despite my original perception that sports mode PASM would be a disadvantage on bad roads for reasons of compromised road contact, the sheer reduction in body roll/twist by the sports PASM setting made for a much more controlled feeling.

Of course I paid for the pleasure of flying through the English landscape at speed in sports PASM mode by finding out that the lid on my cappucino cup wasn't quite as spillproof as I would have wished.

    Re: Beautiful day

Interesting observation Ente. I'll try with PASM in Sport mode and get back to you. Assuming I don't kill myself in the process.

So was my arse moving around a lot then?

    Re: Beautiful day

Yes you could see the car moving quite heavily. Though I guess that's the sign of a good suspension management.. maintaining grip under bad road conditions? I'm no expert, so the sports PASM might have been the exactly wrong choice on these roads if you knew what you were doing.. just to me personally, the added stiffness felt better.

Oh, and I'm thinking about hosting a meet sometime around the beginning of August, unless someone else wants to fill the gap until Sep.

Sounds good. I think you and Dreamcar ought to start new threads for Rennteam South Of Evening Meets #3 and #4

    Re: Beautiful day

hey guys, are these meets for boxster owners only? i'd be interested in coming (another mad porsche enthusiast!)

    Re: Beautiful day

Sounds good to me Monkey. Going to open a new thread in a bit when we have a better feeling for the area and timing. Will be scouting this weekend.

And remember, two laps of the Chiswick roundabout and once over the flyover doesn't count as a route - no matter how long it takes!!

    Re: Beautiful day

But... but...but... there's so much to see and do at the Chiswick roundabout.. honestly. A car dealership for sightseeing (Renault), and a handwash right next to it (the ones which leaned their full bodyweight worth onto my car and then scrubbed it enthusiastically, argh).

Oh, and if done before 6am, you can enjoy the scenery at a spirited rounding speed.

All welcome, be good to see you (and your car! )

    Re: Beautiful day

As said earlier, anyone is welcome, even 911 owners.

When I get back from my holiday in Yorkshire I will start thinking about the Great Rennteam New Forest Meet in September. If anyone is interested in spending a few hours going round the National Motor Museum in Beaulieu let me know as I will make that part of the day. That's a start, anyway.
