Re: It will most likely be named the Boxster SC

The shape and look is too identifiable with other Boxsters
to be called anything other than a Boxster something.

Adding a SC designation would imbue some Porsche history, and be easy for sales and marketing people to explain. It also would fit logically with the recent history of Porsches sports car model designations.

It also leaves Porsche the option to name the lighter,
    more powerful variant a RS.

Why?!? If you want to put it that way... "carrera" is nothing more or less than the spanish word for "race"... I think the CGT is the most "racey" porsche on the streets now!

"THE race" in motorsport history IMO... toughest race in the world that gathered the most important drivers of motorsport of the time with over 3,000km of high speed racing public roads of 1950's Mexico... we will never see anything like it again.

You know, i actually like this idea the best. Boxster GT for the basic version, Boxster GTS for the more powerful, and Boxster GT RS if there is a version on top of that.

I also agree that the origins of the name Boxster have little or nothing to do with what the name of this coupe should be. The coupe is obviously pretty darn close to the same car, so it should have a name that is pretty close, hence Boxster GTS.

One of my arguments that the origins shouldn't matter is this: The origin of my name (Eric) is scandinavian and means "ever powerful"(acording to babynamesworld.com). Am I scandinavian? No. Am I ever powerful? No. Should I be stripped of my name because of this? I don't think so...

Meanwhile, does this coupe stem from the Boxster? Yes...far more than i stem from a scandinavian, thats for sure.

    Hey.
Erm....unless your name was made especially for YOU, I cant see any comparison between the way people name their children, and how Porsche is marketing their cars via artificially created names.

I dont think very many people give their children names that describe their physical traits or purpose.
(Except my parents, who gave me a name that means "he who has ridicoulously large genitals")

The closest parallel I can think of -staying in your analogy-, is this:
Your name is Eric. Eric is a man's name. Let's say you hav a daughter. Would you name her Eric XS (xtra small) ?

    (Okay...this is getting outta hand...LOL!!!!!

I absolutely see the practicality of calling it Boxster something - I just think it would be off the mark.
Besides...we will probably have to live with the name Cayman. Yikes!

Agree with the naming scheme 100% - it enhances the whole " Boxster " brand the way GT2s and GT3s sell the sporty image in a tip 911 cab , which is what the dealers want , as the Boxster name has sorta lost some cache in the US marketplace. Who's gonna be fooled - EVERYONE knows it's a coupe version of a Boxster by it's lines , no matter what it's called or no matter how bent out of shape the linguists are.
When I see this car , I see a fixed roof " Boxster " , nothing else - and that's exactly what's under the skin.

They just badge the rear " GT" ," GTS " , "GT RS " . No "Boxster" badging . Voila !

Re: Whatever you name it, PLEASE FORGET THE WORD BOXSTER!!!

No matter how much Boxster fans would delight in seeing a
Boxster with a GT, GTS or RS moniker, you arent going to see it on a 300hp 987.

Porsche traditionally has reserved those designations for
extraordanairly fast variants or models, like the 996 GT2,
    996 GT3,964 RS,904 GTS,Carrera GT etc..

The 300hp Boxster coupe wont be in that class, but it is in SC territory.

Re: Whatever you name it, PLEASE FORGET THE WORD BOXSTER!!!

Jim, would it be possible to imagine a stripped-down, "Boxster Coupe" with 300+ BHP that actually gets that fast?
I mean the GT2 weighs almost 1500 kg and that's not exactly light.
If they build a 1000-1100 kg Boxster with let's say 320 bhp (which probably wont happen for political reasons) it would have appr. the same bph pr. kilo ratio as the GT2.

    Ok...this is probably too theoretical

Re: Whatever you name it, PLEASE FORGET THE WORD BOXSTER!!!

    No.

Its running gear and the safety laws it has to meet make it impossible to meet a low target weight, its dimensions and design leave no way to even build a 1200kg street Boxster.

As for the GT2 and GT3, keep in mind that the they had 482hp and 383 hp at around 3200lbs.

Re: Whatever you name it, PLEASE FORGET THE WORD BOXSTER!!!

The SC reminds me of another car I have sitting in my garage... Lexus SC400...

Yaya... I know a litte slow to respond

Re: Whatever you name it, PLEASE FORGET THE WORD BOXSTER!!!

    Better late than never!

Get that Lexus outta the garage!

Re: Whatever you name it, PLEASE FORGET THE WORD BOXSTER!!!

Lexus SC 430. Now that's a girls car.

In total agreement.....I don't see how someone could drop that kind of money on one of those things. Interior is decent, exterior is terrible.

I do like the previous SC300 and SC400 though. The SC400 is really a close relative to the 928.....that Lexus 32 valve V8 resembles the Porsche 928 V8 veeeery closely in a few areas.

A co-worker has one of the rare SC300 5 speeds.....a pretty nice daily driver. I'm trying to talk him into dropping a Supra twin turbo engine into it!

Re: Whatever you name it, PLEASE FORGET THE WORD BOXSTER!!!

Mine is a 1998 Lexus SC400, with only 55k miles on it... As soon as Lexus changed the body style, they lost me for a customer. I thought the sleek, low body style was very nice. And yes, the new one's could be considered a girl's car I suppose, but I have seen plenty of guys, especially in high commuter cites drive the older SC models such as the one I have when they were new.

It definitely is a more luxurious sports coupe... but, I have to tell ya, it was one of the most smoothest rides I ever had with decent power on the road. I can't get myself to get rid of it... especially when they no longer make that body style.

Re: Whatever you name it, PLEASE FORGET THE WORD BOXSTER!!!

By the way... Lexus makes one hell of a car... I had a 1994 SC400 and the now 1998 SC400, and never once... not once, did it ever have a problem. Only time it was at the dealer was for regular maintenance intervals. And that is 11 years of having a SC model.

Re: Whatever you name it, PLEASE FORGET THE WORD BOXSTER!!!

One of my male co-workers loves the SC 430. So, naturally, I'm giving him a hard time. Gotta knock some sense into him.

Re: Whatever you name it, PLEASE FORGET THE WORD BOXSTER!!!

I've always loved that body style on the SC400, and to a lesser extent the original LS400 as well. They are both very clean designs with a consistent and coherent theme that is maintained in every element of the car. They have an understated, timeless quality that is similar in that way to many Porsche designs. I particularly like the smooth, clean arch on the front bumper of the SC400.

Re: Whatever you name it, PLEASE FORGET THE WORD BOXSTER!!!

    Boxster GTS....

Re: Another POLL: appropiate name for the new Boxster Coupe?

Even though (as Dr. Phil loves to point out) the boxster name means something as the combination of two words, it's still as arbitrary as a number designation because the words it draws meaning from and the way they were put together are arbitrary. I could call it the Coolar because it's a cool car. So really from the beginning 986 would have been a great name for the boxster. Now you could really just call the new coupe the 987. But wait you say, the boxster is a 987. I know this and guess what, 997s come in coupes and convertibles. So if I had a Cayman, I'd just say I have a 987. If I wanted to be more concise, I have a 987 Coupe.

Unfortunately Porsche doesn't market 987s. It's a boxster. Sure we all know what boxster means (specifically a roadster with a boxer motor), but I think of the boxster platform when I think of the word boxster (a mid engine six cylinder water-cooled entry level Porsche, etc) and I think many others do as well. Boxster = 986/987 to me. It has become in my mind a general term for the platform. So if they make a coupe version of that platform, guess what it is... a boxster coupe. Sure it makes little sense if you break it down, but I still argue that it's a far better name than cayman or cayenne, those names are just stupid.
