    997 or 996 Turbo?

Hello i have been following this form for quite a while but never have posted. I was hoping for some help! i own a 996 C2 and i am considering trading in for one of two cars but cant decide. Eiter a new 997 C2 or a 996 Turbo. What is everyones opinions, which is the better buy. Also does anyone know the cost of the Aero Kit for the 997? I really would love to hear your opinions, thank you!

I wouldn't go from one 996 to another 996 now, when you can get your hands on the new 911. I traded my 2002 996 TT Coupe for the 997 S Cab. The 996's are long in the tooth and in 1 year from now will feel even more outdated.

    Re: 997 or 996 Turbo?

I would say 997 C2S over the 996 Turbo. The 997 wins in the good-looks department, FLATTENS the 996 in the interior, and the performance of the S is not that far behind a 996 Turbo, especially handling. It's tough to spend big dough on a past-generation car. You'll always be looking at the 997's with envy, even if you could pull them in a drag race. Don't know about the aero kit's cost, but in my opinion, you couldn't pay me to slap that garb onto my beautiful and perfectly balanced and aggressive 997S. Just my uncensored opinion!!! Have you been to your dealer and taken some drives yet??

What are you going to Turbo anyway?

What are you going to do with the car? Do you have a serious track hobby? If not, what are you gonna do with the turbo? Psycho out other perf-car drivers on the road? Burn around corners in an even more risky fashion? Cause tremendous (as opposed to great) havoc at green lights?

Both cars will do the above things very well but the 997 is definite improvement over the 996.

Now the choice between a 997 turbo and plain old 997/s will be hard if money were no object.

Re: What are you going to Turbo anyway?

Go forward, not backward. Get the 997 now, and later, trade it in and get the 997TT. I can't imagine trading my 997S in now and getting the 996 that I had planned on getting before the 997 came out.

    Re: 997 or 996 Turbo?

    Thank you for your responce!!

I have been able to sit in te 997 but not drive it due to it not being very available. The turbo also nice with alot of power and feels awsome during the drive. My only set back with the 996 turbo is that it is depreciating in price and almost the same price as a 993 Turbo, and that the turbo is 4 wheel drive, if i were even to get my hands on a good condition 996 turbo for my price range im conserned it would prob be a 2001 first year which i have heard had problems. The 997 i dont think i spent enough time with it for me to completely sell me, and havn't driven it. its just that i have allways loved the turbo.

why dont you like the aero kit?? I dont usually like body kits, but i really love this one! i think the back trunk may need some work but the front cover i think looks great! Much improvment from the 996 aero kit in my opinion!

    Re: 997 or 996 Turbo?

It looks cluttery, tack-on, aftermarket, to me. I think it cheapens the look of the car. Like taking a supermodel, and making her wear a pair of Oakley Blades. And don't get me started on that goofball dork-o wing!!! (Aren't I subtle and sensitive?? ) In the end, to each their own. If you love it, get it!!

    Re: 997 or 996 Turbo?

BTW, I never liked the 996 aero kit either. Aero kits are for Honda Civics and Chevy Camaros.

    Re: 997 or 996 Turbo?

The aerokit front looks ok. The rear wing looks great viewed from directly behind. From the side, it looks really strange. Just my opinion.

I wouldn't add it on to a plain 997 or 997S. But if it came with the 997 GT3, I wouldn't be happy but I would still take the car.

    Re: 997 or 996 Turbo?

    >>>>If you've got an issue, here's a tissue...
    hahaha jk
that analogy with the oakley's makes sense, have anyone seen the aero kit in person. Should i not even consider it?

    Aero Kit Psychology.

Proud to say I figured this out:

It depends on your neighborhood and your peer group. I'm not from LA and, at 40-something, I don't aspire to cruise for 20 year old chicks on the strip.

So the Aero kit would look stupid and would be a dumb choice for me.

When I see a _kid_ with those attachments on his car I'm happy for him: he's enjoying his car.

If I see a guy my age, in my 'hood, with those outrageous wings and body panels and I chuckle and wonder what his problems might be.

Brilliant MMD, I think you've nailed it. I feel the same when I see a young kid with that kind of stuff going on. Have a blast, and trust me, you'll probably shake your head and laugh when you look back at old pictures someday. I know I do!! But when it's an older guy, I have the saying of, "that car has old-man's disease" Old man's disease can manifest itself in many different ways, but however and whenever you see it, it always involves overkill tack-ons of funky hoods, skirts, spoilers, emblems, decals, stripes and accessories, in any mix or combination thereof!! LOL!!!

    Re: Aero Kit Psychology.

996 Turbo or a 997 C2S? 996 Turbo everytime. It's the better looking car IMO, the 997 may be newer but after a couple of testdrives the 997 falls short of the 996 Turbo. Plus it's easily tunable to 500bhp.

96Bossnine, I DON'T look at a 997 with envy (until the GT3/TT/GT2 of course) but still admire a 996 Turbo everytime I see one.

I don't think you need worry about depreciation at this stage, it won't drop lower than the 993 and it can't drop more than what it is at now!

    Re: 997 or 996 Turbo?

I agree Mike S, i dont think so either.

I have had my 996 C2 for aproximatly 2 years and never considered doing any thing to it, because it looked elegant for a sports car. But i always get jealous of the meanier sportier look of the Turbo, i guess that is why i am considering the Aero kit!

I guess im just in a messed up situation, a 997 turbo new when it comes out is out of my price range and the 996 is just going to be, or is out dated compared with the 997.

The 996 Turbo hasn't taken full depreciation yet beacuse it's still the newest Turbo on the market. Once the 997 Turbo is available it will fall slightly more, especially when the 997 Turbo is widely available. That's how it seems to work in the N.E. USA anyway.

    Re: 997 or 996 Turbo?

This choice IMO is tougher to make but 997 Turbo is not available yet [or is it? ]

How about a choice between the 997S and the 997 C4S?

But the 996 C2 to a 996 Turbo is more like a lateral move than a real upgrade when you have a new model available... I'd take the 997S

and if you want the meaner look..... [I can go without the rims though]

    Re: 997 or 996 Turbo?

New isn't always better. Just look at BMW's latest Bangle creations

I'm willing to bet if I put you lot on a dessert island back in 1998 and didn't expose you to any Porsche models, I let you out in 2006, then show you the exterior 996 Turbo and 997 C2S side-by-side without actually telling you which one is newer, you would probably say the 996 is newer.

Because you know the 997 is newer, irrespective whether the 997 is the better looking/better drive/performance or not, you have already convinced yourself the 996 is already an outdated dinosour of no use. This kind of behavour is no different from a kid exposed to a new toy, the old toy is left in the bin never to be looked at or used again.

    Re: 997 or 996 Turbo?

    Great pic Tooner
I wish the front of my 997s was the same ,more aggresive looking and lower, hopefully the gt3 will look like this or better

I disagree especially looking at the interior's but we're not deserted on a desert island so who knows.

Nobody said this was much different than when we were kids

All of that aside after owning a 996 Turbo and trading it in for a 997 S cab and after driving the 997 for only a week I can tell you there is a big difference and the 997 is a better handling car. QUALITY wise cosmetically the 996 really feels very sub-par

dinosour of no use.... Absolutly not, if i was completly closed minded like that i would not have made a forum asking for peoples opions, yet the 996 is not the newer model and just like a child yes i do want a newer car. But all in all the question was ask because i want the better car, not a newer one. The 996 being catergorized as an older model is simply for me to weight out the pro's and con's between both cars.

    Re: 997 or 996 Turbo?

I agree that we all go onto this forum to seek advice - hey I'm just the same. What I was meaning is not to look at things in black and white.

There are merits to owning any 911, be it 993, 996 or 997. They are all fabulous sports cars and to attain a car of that quality with any other marque, you would be paying Ferrari money for this.

And I admit, I'm a big kid just like you all except I have to use my own money the get the toys myself

    Re: 997 or 996 Turbo?

I asked the same question on this board a couple of weeks ago. I drove 'em both and liked 'em both, but LOVED the look of the 996 more. Yesterday, I bought an '04 911TT with 500 odd miles and I couldn't be happier. Thanks to the advice of fellow members, I also went with the manual transmission. In the classic brain vs. heart struggle, the brain couldn't decide, so I went with the heart. 996 all the way for me...

    Re: 997 or 996 Turbo?

    Dartman,
CONGRATS on the purchase of your TT.
Below is a pic. of the TT I traded in.
What color did you get/options ?
    Please put in a pic.

    lol... NAILED is right 69bossnine.

I am one of those 20 something guys but I seldom dress up the car unless it's done tastefully and in OEM parts.

Seeing the 'D' in your plate option XAA Aerokit Cup costs 4843 Euro incl. VAT in Germany. I have seen the Aerokit on a silver 997S that drove slowly next to me between two red lights. Too less ground clearance at the front for everday usage I would say. Maybe the car also had the -20mm option. IMO the wing is too monstrous. I like the similarly shaped but more elegant GT3 MK I wing much more.
To your 997 against 996TT question:
When I was standing in the showroom of my dealer I saw a 996TT with low miles for 97K Euro. Having the order sheet of a 997S that crossed the 100K barrier in my hands a short thought crossed my mind. Man, are you still right in your mind to buy a first model year 997S instead of a 996TT that is even cheaper? For my heart the decision was easy I never got used to the design of the 996 that lacked the characteristic 911 body proportions. Driving a 993 for almost 9 years now, I ordered the 997S. The design is not perfect, could be better at the front and lights, but for me it's the true successor to the 993. Besides the design the 997S also has the right power and torque increase to let room for my 911 after next to feel a difference If I had bought the 996TT I probably would be disappointed with every next car.

    Re: 997 or 996 Turbo?

If that's the only choice, ie. waiting for a 997 Turbo or GT3 is out of the question, then it is a no brainer. Get the 996 Turbo with the Gt1 derived race inspired twin turbo charged animal. There is no comparison. This business about the looks and the interior and the "newest" creation is a pile of you know what. We buy Porsches for the drive.

    Re: 997 or 996 Turbo?

Truly everyone has made good arguments, and vailed points. And thank you for your responses! But i can really say that i am even more confused now!! I should really go to the dealer and take a good look at what i would really enjoy more. Hey maybe ill forget all this 996 997 buisness and go and get a 993 Turbo!!

    Re: 997 or 996 Turbo?

how does everyone feel about 997 seal gray w/ coco? does anyone have pics?
