PCM Changes - Scan of official Porsche document

My dealer received yesterday an email from Porsche with all the recent changes introduced to the PCM units and called me right away. He was kind enough to print a copy for me. It's in Spanish but I'll translate the most important parts after the pages scans.

So the main changes included on cars from April 15 are:

    • Reads MP3 (it's recommended to have the files at least in 128 Kbit to get a high reproduction quality).

    • The selection of titles has increased by 3 digits due to the MP3 function and the increase of the memory that this comes with (I assume it's referring to the MP3 tracks name...)

    • Improved mute functions: The silent mode of the audio reproduction does not deactivates when increasing the volume during a navigation indication or traffic announcement.

      Navigation Changes:

    • General optimization of the navigation precision and localization, the route calculation, the guide strategy to the destination and the calculation of the time of arrival.

    • The time of arrival and the distance to the destination is also shown during the zoom "crossings" (couldn't really understand the Spanish word)

    • Ability to specify the postal code of the destination.

    • Authorization of the TMC (Traffic Message Channel) for Spain, Grand Britain and France. This way all European customers that have the PCM can use the dynamic navigation on these countries that has in account recent traffic warnings. In Great Britain and France it's used for the first time paid high quality traffic information. The customer does not have any additional costs since the payment for this service (in Great Britain and France) is done by a single license contract and it's already included on the price of all vehicles (except the Carrera GT).

    • Each TMC of the INFO menu can be shown graphically on the map.

    • New cartographic material. Huge increase of the streets from 3.5 million to 5.8 million of Km.

    • Increase of the zones completely digitalized on the South of Europe (France, Spain and Italy).

    • New countries: Europe - Gibraltar, Greece, Hungary. Asia-Pacific - Hong Long, Macao. Australia - New Zealand.

If someone fluent in Spanish could fill in the holes of my translation it would be great.

As a side note, I'm so pissed of about this middle of the year change that I can't really get it to words. My car was build in the begin of April.

Re: PCM Changes - Scan of official Porsche document

My 997 was built 18th April and has none of this!
    Well pissed off!

Re: PCM Changes - Scan of official Porsche document

    Good job Steve, muito obrigado

Your translation is good, nothing to add really.

Re: PCM Changes - Scan of official Porsche document

could someone help me on this?

i have my car since February, and want to retrofit the Navigation mode....

1)Will i get the new version of Navigation mode?
Or will i get the old version of Navigation??

I assume Carlso that the mp3 capability is only in the in-dash cd player and not at the dvd that comes with navi

So what will it be with my navigation ? Will it match my previous version PCM or will it be this new version?

Re: PCM Changes - Scan of official Porsche document

i also assume the addition of the new countries including Greece is just a matter of a "new" cd-rom

As until now customers in Greece could get the navigation function but without having the actual posibity to use it as there was no cd rom available for greece

Re: PCM Changes - Scan of official Porsche document

Does anyone know if these changes include US cars?

Re: PCM Changes - Scan of official Porsche document

Only the in-dash cd-player plays mp3, not the cd-changer. I would "assume" that the retrofit would logically incorporate these changes but can't say for sure. As to including Greece, your dealer should know this, it depends if the company, I believe it still Nav-Tech, has mapped Greece yet of not.

Re: PCM Changes - Scan of official Porsche document

nut in the aboce scan it says they added Greece FINALY!

Re: PCM Changes - Scan of official Porsche document

I missed that. Then that means the DVD you will get with your NAV will be the Greek one

Re: PCM Changes - Scan of official Porsche document

Can previously built cars get a software update to incorporate these changes?

Re: PCM Changes - Scan of official Porsche document

Sorry, its doesn't say anything to that effect

Re: PCM Changes - Scan of official Porsche document

According with what my dealer told me today, a retrofit will not be offered.

I for one will be expressing my deepest disagreement with such decision (major middle of the model year change and no retrofit offer) to my local dealer and via a letter to Porsche AG.

In fact, by the time my car arrived to the dealer it already had a piece of hardware outdated (PCM). It was build in the begin of April and arrived there around 20 of the same month.

Re: PCM Changes - Scan of official Porsche document

    I feel exactly the same.
To add insult to injury I ordered TPMS (nice to have in a car with no spare) but was told that TPMS was not available and would not be for the forseeable future. I then noted that Carlos' car came with TPMS, built 1st week May (I think), around 2 weeks after my build date!

My spanish isn't very good (I actually only had Latin in school... ) but it is my understanding that the updated PCM 2 has also an increased memory capacity. If understood right, this means that a plain software update won't do the job at all to get MP3 functionality.
I also understood from the spanish info that the optional CD changer plays MP3 too (not the DVD unit which comes with the navigation). Carlos...can you confirm that or did I translate it wrong???

That's what I was afraid of. Another reason to wait a year before buying the first year model.

First part is correct, the memory has been increased in order to handle 3 more digits of the titles, so there is a memory increase.

But about the CD-changer, it says only the PCM CD-slot handles MP3. When it refers to the CD-Changer it is to say that the PCM slot handles mp3 much like the CD-changer handles discs, since in the mp3 disc you can have several "records" in one disc so you can change from folder/record to record within the disc much like you cahnge from disc to disc withing the CD-changer.

Re: PCM Changes - Possibility of Upgrading 2005 System

I have queried the possibility of upgrading the PCM in my Jan 05 build Boxster with my dealer and they have replied as follows :-

"Having now spoken with Porsche technical they have advised us to sit
tight with regards to any system updates for the PCM-(TMC) system,
apparently the factory are looking into a possible software upgrade.
Porsche at Reading have tried MY06 software in a MY05 car and it
corrupted the system so they strongly advise against this. I will keep
you updated as and when I know more".

Re: PCM Changes - Possibility of Upgrading 2005 System

Mmm, sounds interesting. Thanks for digging that up.

Were you lead by the OPC to think that a software upgrade to provide MP3 and PostCode address lookup is possible and on the cards then?

Re: PCM Changes - Possibility of Upgrading 2005 System

Too bad Porsche wasn't smart enough to provide enough memory on the PCM circuit board to begin with for sw expansion.

Re: PCM Changes - Possibility of Upgrading 2005 System

"Hong Long" did you mean Hong Kong hehehehe

Please excuse my OPC - he is from Dorset.

You've had all the info I got. I doubt if the postcode address will be possible but TMC is what I want more than anything else. I'm not really bothered about MP3, to be honest. The 6CD player does for me just fine.

Re: PCM Changes - Possibility of Upgrading 2005 System

Sorry for being stupid - what's TMC? Is that to do with auto-routing round traffic accidents?

    Correct.
