    Barrier Impact of crash

    Explains alot....

    Re: Barrier Impact of crash

Yes, while difficult to watch, that does put the sequence of events in better context than the close-up photos

    Re: Barrier Impact of crash

    See the thing is ..

    -No Grass on the tires
    -No skid marks
    -Wheels hardly articulated

He must of been going so fast, lost it, had little to no time to react and it was to late.

It is not an acccurate depiction of the accident scene. What you see are pictures taken after the rescue crew arrived and rearranged the accident site in order to get Ben and Cory out of the car. A great deal was moved including the barrier.

    Wide shot

a great deal of distance was covered

    Re: Wide shot

    Re: Wide shot

the main thing that one does not even see skid marks like topherV said, very disturbing to see

    Re: Wide shot

I witnessed the crash. He was on the brakes the entire time, off the pavement in milliseconds and completely lost traction on the wet grass.

Nick, the car was not relocated ... it simply bounced off the wall unable to absorb the impact. The CGT is simply not crashworthy. F1 cars routinely crash at these speeds with no injury to the driver. As it was clear at the factory, and I told Ben, the CGT is a prototype NOT a car.

When Walter Rohl said the car scared him, nobody understood that he was talking about his chances of surviving a crash. Really the CGT is a turtle compared to a full race car at 800hp and 1200lbs.

    Re: Wide shot

It's so sad to see how many unfortunate elements made up this accident.
    *The official misjudging the situation
    *The F-car pulling out
*The layout of the track with concrete barriers instead of tires
*The fact that he hit the barrier head-on and not "drove" along the side of it. Had he only had a chance of doing so, he might have simply scratched the side of the car and gotten slingshot across the track instead.
*The fact that it was morning - and the dew hadn't left the grass, making it impossible to brake on.
*The use of grass instead of gravel. They might as well have put a sheet of ice on the track. Grass makes sense in some ways, but it's pretty hard to brake on.

I talked to a friend who is very often on tracks and he said he had never even heard of anything like this. Usually amateurs like us only get a few dents and perhaps a bruise or two. Accidents like this are fortunately rare.

And RC - I think it was ok that you stopped the "what if "-debate thread before. However I dont think people have a need to find the "guilty" part here.
First of all it won't bring Ben or Corey back and secondly I believe whoever mistakenly waved the F-car out in front of Ben and Corey has such a hard time, we should all think about him/her too.

We can, however, learn from this - or at least try to learn.
When people are ready for it, I would welcome a thread on safety.
What we can all do actively and passively to make both road and track safer for ourselves and our fellow motorists.

I'm not trying to be overtly PC here - cause let's face it, we drive hi-performance sportscars...but I believe it's safe to say that we all want to keep enjoying our cars without endangering ourselves or others - or at least minimizing the risk.

Looking at the second photo, the angle of the wall relative to the path of a car accidentally leaving the track is almost perpendicular. Angle of incidence is nearly zero degrees. What were they thinking, laying the concrete wall like that?

    Re: Wide shot

point dont drive on american speedways, that wouldnt have happened if he was driving on Monza or Nurbergring F1 track, I am very sory for this unfortunate evet my hart goes to his family and friends.

not the best way definately... there are so many obvious things that become obvious when sth like this happens, meanwhile nobody will notice.

about the safety of the CGT don't know what to say... a car can be very very safe but when it comes to this kind of crashes with so many G's involved it's pretty difficult to protect the people inside. If there is 1 meter of max deformation of the front for example and the car is going at 100 km/h then you can't do miracles, the best you can get is to get a constant deceleration in each of the mm of distance made in the impact and thus make the max acceleration minimum. And still it will be very hight...

    Re: Wide shot

    This is very sad...

The impact was brutal...have no words

    Re: Wide shot

No skid marks as said, very disturbing.

He hit the brakes but nothing hapened at all. He did not slow down at all. Must have been so scary for Ben to see that he was impossible to slow down the car, while heading for those stupid concrete blocks.

a user posted a link to a NBC TV news feature MPG video about the accident on F-chat:

    http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=61677&page=11&pp=20

-- skid marks are visible on the tarmac and then some meters on the grass.

    Re: Wide shot

I read that the barrier was temporary because of some stage they had erected jutted out and made a chicane on the barrier. You can kind of see it on the picture. Usually the barrier is parallel to the track.

    Re: Wide shot

talk about having the event at the wrong time and at the wrong place....

    Re: Wide shot

Tragic combination of factors and zero margin for error.
