997: C2S vs. C4S: Which would YOU order?

I'd love to hear from Porsche-philes on this one. I have a 997S on order for October delivery. I'm very tempted to change over to a C4S. I want serious performance without the "take no prisoners" aspect of the GT3. PSE, PCCB, sport shifter, sport steering wheel, and X-51 are my type of options. In the real world, though, I like the variable suspension settings offered by the 997S; if you are "just driving" or on a long trip you can choose the more comfortable option - this is especially important on our "Third World Quality" California roads.

What are the pros and cons of each model? For starters, the obvious things (besides price) seem to be:

    Carrera 4S:
Pros: traction, especially in bad weather; more predictable handling at the limit, that gorgeous tail!
Cons: extra weight of 4WD system.

    Carrera 2S:
Pros: lower weight, more fun when you push it and get it right!
Cons: handling at limits, especially in the wet.

Re: 997: C2S vs. C4S: Which would YOU order?

What about the extra width of the C4S? Some would say that the extra width looks better. I would too, if I could tell the difference of 44mm.

Re: 997: C2S vs. C4S: Which would YOU order?

Oops. Forgot to say that if I can order again, I would probably go with the C4S because of the extra width and handling.

Re: 997: C2S vs. C4S: Which would YOU order?

Have you driven a 996 C4S yet? The AWD is definitly a different feeling. IMHO, it's not worth the extra weight and slightly numb feeling with the same power. I'd get the C2S over the C4S even with the Chicago winters. I had no problems with traction in the snow with dedicated winter rubber. And, I'm not one for pushing the car in wet conditions on public roads, although the AWD may make for less sphingter tightening moments at higher speeds. I've just not really noticed at reasonable speeds any lack of control/confidence with my C2S even in greasy conditions...

Now if you're talking 996 TT/997 Turbo, there is where an AWD system may help dramatically in getting that power delivered to the pavement...

I vote C2S for driving fun...

Re: 997: C2S vs. C4S: Which would YOU order?

I can't really justify the benefits. C2S suits me perfectly. Now if I lived in a place where the weather sucked most of the time that'd be a different story. Isn't that the real reason for it anyway?

Most of my experience in Porsches is in a friend's 993. I'm jazzed about the 997; I've always wanted a 911 but could never really fit (I'm 6'7").

And, when I said "gorgeous tail" I meant that extra C4S width out back...

Thanks for all the comments. A lot of this seems to come down to the old "fun to drive" argument...

Re: 997: C2S vs. C4S: Which would YOU order?

I don't want to spend over $100K with this Porsche car. It's a psychological barrier. That decides it for me. I ordered a 997S with "standard" options will add up to about $95K with tax etc. I guess I could spend more but: why? It's just an indulgence for the street; it's not like I'm tracking the car.

A C4S would be an excessive indulgence.

I absolutely love the 993. What a great car and what an exhaust note! But, the 997 is a level of refinement that 911 hasn't reached until now. One could argue that it's become a bit more like a GT than a sportscar, but, I for one, don't think so. With "sport" on and that 3.8 L howling in the back, it's all sport as I'm ripping through each gear. With "sport" off (normal), it's a sporty GT that I can tool around even with I290 traffic comfortably, albeit irritably...

I do think that the C4S b*tt is beautiful. However, I gotta say that I love my C2S's a** even though it may be a bit narrower...

I'm not sure if you're interested but the Cayman has incredible headroom, compared to the 997. You might want to take a look...

A wider back side is always a plus ... Literally

C4S when I get the chance I would maybe next year, after I get one those things they call 4 car garage homes, It's like GOLD here in the bay..

Re: 997: C2S vs. C4S: Which would YOU order?

Had a C4S on order (picked up my 997 C2S about 2 months ago) - the C4S was going to be my next upgrade.... not now... perfectly happy with the C2S... next may be an Aston or a 997GT

Mine is a cab , and i can only agree with the above statements, in belgium it's raining a lot and i never experienced any problems with the traction so far.
I had a 996cab 3.4 before and was able to compare it on a circuit (magny-cours track in france) with a 996 4S and, altough the 4S is the most beautiful 996, I prefered, concerning, fun and driveability, my 996.
The only pro in favour of the 4S is it's sexy ass...up to you to decide what's most important: fun, lightness or the gorgeous "backhand"

Thanks for the advice, but I really prefer the look of the 997...

    Yeah, I don't blame you.

Re: 997: C2S vs. C4S: Which would YOU order?

I thought I would upgrade to the C4S but now having driven my 997 C2S in the rain (and even some heavy snow) I have not once wished I had four wheel drive. The C4S would have to be a lot faster / better looking to get me to consider it now.

Re: 997: C2S vs. C4S: Which would YOU order?

I still would get the C2 as I don't like the feel of an AWD car. I don't drive my car in the rain anyway, that's what the SUV is for, but if I did, I would just slow down and drive within the laws of physics that govern my car. I still see idiots driving in the rain like it was bone dry, what are they thinking?

But the C4 I'm sure will be a great car for snow belt people.
