    Re: Detectors are ALMOST useless

While we're on the subject, I've got a pet peeve. WHY, I mean WHY, do people insist on slamming on the brakes and slowing to a crawl when they see a cop on the side of the road writing a ticket??? HE'S BUSY!!!!!! HE'S COMMITTED!!! What in the hell do they think he's going to do? Drop everything, abandon the ticket he's in the process of issuing, jump in his car and chase you down??? All the while having ZERO CLUE as to how fast you were going in the first place because he was busy dealing with the citation at hand??? It just seems absolutely stupid to me the way people panic when there's a car pulled over getting a citation. When you see that, heck, that's when you know you're safe for awhile, and there's not likely another one that you'll encounter any time soon because they intentionally spread-out their resources. Every time there's some poor person on the side of the road getting written up, is one more time I've managed to dodge the same fate. Hell, I speed up a bit in the spirit of victory!!

Haahaha...always enjoy the turn of a great phrase.

But I have to agree with BossNine. At least for me personally, going totally organic--with NO radar detection device-- has netted fewer violations than with a detector. (although small statistical sample--I've luckily only had three in 20 years, 1 without detector, 2 with).

There are just too many instant-on devices currently in use by law enforcement.

Best time to speed with semi-impunity imho: travelling UPHILL. Ideally with plenty of forward visibility, of course. It is just my observation that uphill sections of roadway are rarely targeted by police....until they read this... Doh!

Re: Battery powered units are BAD!

In the south, certain cars garner you immunity. If I get caught doing triple-digit speeds in my Porsche, my goose is cooked. But I could jump in my '68 Shelby GT500KR right now and head down the interstate at 140mph, and as long as I let the trooper check out under the hood, and sit in the driver's seat, he'll let me go and giggle like a school girl doing it. Cops are suckers for 60's muscle cars!!! LOL!!!!

Yes, yes indeed, major irritant to have to do 75 >> 50 MPH because the moonrocks ahead decide that the priest is now watching, we'd better quit talking in church and look pious.

It is a bit of "look how smart I am" behavior (for some, more "look how MISCHIEVOUS I was-- speeding, and now getting away with it bwuhaha")....humans.

Haha, good point and also good for a chuckle.

Mike won't like this, but ...

I vainly assume that I am the Mike in reference...

MANY thanks to Mr. Mike -- my two V1s have saved me beaucoup times over the years! I started with the original Escort products, then upgraded to the V1 when it first hit the market. No one -- repeat, NO ONE -- has service and support to match Valentine One. My two units have been upgraded three times (each) since I purchased them. One of those upgrades involved switching my units out for brand new models. Each time the cost was fairly minimal, especially compared to the cost of having an obsolete product. AFAIK nobody else offers upgrades to customers. As long as Mike's involved with the company -- which virtually guarantees they'll have superior products and support -- I am a V1 customer for life...

    Re: Speeding Ticket

Since Feb I've had a few close calls, most noticeably while racing a vette on an open stretch of road. Started from a dead heat behind a vette and got up to about a buck thirty when suddenly a cop came out of nowhere from the other direction. My heart went to my throat, thought for sure I was NAILED! Luckily he kept going. Anyway...it was an awesome feeling powering past the vette. Since then I've invested in a radar detector to provide some advance warning, but it's still important to pick your spots, be cautious and smart. Be familiar with places to speed, like stretches of highway with median walls where you only have to worry about what's in front of you. We have alot of those in Atlanta. BTW, great thread, interesting to hear everyone's experiences.

It's good for allowing you to pull to the side of the road quicker for the cops, before they even turn on their lights. As a result, maybe they'll just give you a warning instead of a ticket.

Soemtimes it works, as it did for me the other day when I was in my daily driver (a van), and in a rural area. I was going 68 in a 55 around a bend. The cop was coming the other direction and as soon as he saw me, he pulled to the side to initiate a u-turn. I pulled over right away and as he hit his lights and pulled behind me I was already stopped. He gave me a warning, and at the same time I thought I was in a 60mph zone.
It could go against you too. They could figure you pulled over cause you knew you were speeding

    Re: Detectors are ALMOST useless

Wits are the bottom line. Seeing that this is a porsche forum, those who have Porche's realize that their cars DO stick out in traffic, especially in terms of officers surveying. When you have a car like that, I don't reccomend flying in the left lane. The cop can hit you the quickest with a Ka from the left. In the middle, he is more tempted to fire into the left, and it also gives you a chance to be a little clever. I've never run from a cop, but if they don't get behind you with their lights, you have a chance to pull out and make a dash for it on an exit.

IMO, if you do have a V1 or a different radar detector, you can't allow it to become a false sense of security. You need to use it as a tool, not as a guardian. It's not a radar protector, its a radar detector. The V1 does a great job against radar and it helps me commute in road trips with optimal performance.

I'm curious if anyone here has luck with laser jammers or deflectors. Because the jammers are illegal, I assumed that if a cop sees a nice [insert fast car] fly by, guns it with laser (a favorite of my beloved Montgomery County police) and sees a ridiculous reading, that he's gonna pull the guy over and look for the illegal jammer?? On the other hand, I've heard of experimental deflectors, that refract the light beam of the laser, almost through something like a prism, causing the reading to be different, but not ludicrous. They are illegal due to the FCC laws on light wave regulation, but does anyone have any experience with them?

    Re: Detectors are ALMOST useless

Here is a funny story going back to question about ever getting a speeding ticket. I just bought my 996 and took it out and wanted to break it in, hitting 120-130mph like it was nothing . It started raining so i head home. Not wanting to drive the car in the rain, i took my SUV out and drove on the highway going along with the flow of traffic but got pulled over doing 76 in a 55 . 21 mph over the speed limit and the a--hole cop gave me my first reckless driving ticket ever . How ironic!!

He gave you a ticket for reckless driving? Wow, what an [censored]. How can he give you a reckless driving ticket when you are just speeding 20mph over the limit? Sorry man, I feel bad for you. Did you get it off tho?

    Re: Detectors are ALMOST useless

If the cop was a nice guy he would have gave me a regular ticket, which i can deal with. But i guess he just couldn't shaved 2 mph off, and wanted to be a ___ about it. Anyway i went to court and the judge let me. Good right? Not good because i check my driving record and the reckless was on there. I went back to the court house and they told me that the judge was a subsatute judge and they checked the file and the judge left no notes or nothing about the verdict!! Tell me i dont have the best luck!!!
