Re: SL55 AMG Performance Package (Option Code 030)

there's not that much difference between the sport package and my 55.... the only thing is the alcantara sport steering wheel. plus that car would look funny to me with that on

    Jim,
I believe that performance pack has been around for a while now.
I have not tried it yet, but I've been told the difference is very signigicant with the, IMHO disapointing SL55.
Currently, they fetch at a high price in France.
I'll try and test drive one of those PP SL55 and tell you what I think.

Fanch, could the N-ring calibration of the ABC set-up be one of the significant new changes? Has anyone ever documented the N-ring time of the 55 w/PerfPack?...or is it like 996TTS w/X73....much talked-about but no objective N-ring data....I wonder if the mystery around these option packages is b/c the objective performance differences are embarrassingly microscopic....or are these value-priced cars too close to performance figs of much more expensive models, e.g. SL65 and SLR (or 996GT2 and future 997TT in case of P)....

Right, it has been available for a while...at least in half of this planet.
I had the chance to testdrive such an equipped SL55 AMG, I might even find the pictures somewhere. Great improvement over the normal SL55 AMG, especially the brakes and the locking differential make a difference but the tuned suspension is better too. I also think the car looks slightly better but now with the SLK55 using a similar look in the front part, some people may mistake the SL55 PP with a SLK55.

Worth the extra money? Definetely. But for 160000 Euro (this is how much the car I testdrove costed), I'd prefer a Porsche 996 Turbo S.

I couldn't agree more, i also had a chance to testdrive the turbo S (not as extensively as you get to RC ) and the power is just incredible, the G's that car pulls is crazy. i don't even notice the car pulling me into my seat when i accelerate with a flat foot in my SL... but the SL is a relaxed cruiser, I never ever saw it as a track oriented vehicle

    Correct,
    Ultimately very different cars.
SL is probably the best GT out there in terms of versatility, it lacks the involvement of the Turbo S for sure, but that roof!!!

Re: SL55 AMG Performance Package (Option Code 030)

The SL55 looks classy, is comfortable and fast. For a GT
its a impressive package. Until the MY2006 year the performance package for it has not been available in North America.

The upgraded brake specs read pretty good! But ive never seen any test on a SL55 with this package.

Now Benz is offering similar packages on the C, CLS here of the trick brakes, suspension, LSD and higher speed limiters
for the NA market. I know that I couldnt add that stuff later for the price they are asking.

    Indeed Mike, Indeed,
The old woman drives an SL500 and although not a 55, what a car!
Honestly, for town driving, or jsut cruising in the sun, I actually take it over the 996 cab sometimes!
Best cab out there if you ask me, as a cab that is, IMHO, as an overall package with emphasis on cruising, SL is unbeatable and sales numbers prove it.
I think the SL has something like over 50% of the high end convertible market.
RC, I've read that somewhere, do you concur?

Re: SL55 AMG Performance Package (Option Code 030)

yes, you see a few 500's here, even less 55's and i've seen two 65's so far. but compared to other high-end market cars, they are also by far the most...

Re: SL55 AMG Performance Package (Option Code 030)

    I drove a SL65 last weekend.

It reminded me of those old US Air Force films showing ejection seat testing using a rocket sled on rails.

The SL65 really should offer optional driver and passenger ejection seats.

Very helpful feedback, RC I too much prefer 996TTS over SL55....but do know few guys who may switch back to SL55 w/PP for straight-line commuter duty (they typically have more fun cars for wkend twisties).....biggest raps on 996TTS for commuter duty are turbo lag, lack of exhaust note presence, small fuel tank capacity/range and weak trunk space (for mundane tasks like carrying a week's worth of dry cleaning w/o being crumpled).....but can't beat 996TTS for rainy day traction....
