Review of Turbo "S" (or Powerkit Turbo)

How much better is the driving experience of the Turbo S (or Powerkit Turbo) versus the standard Turbo?

Can anyone who has driven both comment on the differences and whether they recommend the S/Powerkit over the stock Turbs given the big price difference (used)?

    Many thanks...

The X50 power kit (std. on "S") is only noticeable in a major way on long pulls at motorway speeds. An X50 car will walk away from a standard Turbo at high speed.

From rest (or, in short bursts in twisty bits), it may actually be a slight handicap as the spool-up lag is a touch worse in the X50 and the torque comes on at a higher RPM than it does in the base motor.

In the graph below, one can see why the published 0-60 times are a draw between the two motors (w/6-speed) because the extra torque doesn't come on until later in the RPM range, while the low-end torque is actually a bit softer.

The exception to the above analysis occurs in Tiptronic cars where the torque converter helps to get the motor into the high-torque RPM range more quickly than a 6-speed car is able. In Tiptronic cars, the X50 is faster in all circumstances.

I bought the X50 in my 6-speed Cabriolet because of the 60-100 acceleration, not the stop-light grand prix times.

Thanks a lot Mike - that is exactly the info I was looking for!

Re: Review of Turbo "S" (or Powerkit Turbo)

In the last track day, me and a friend of mine were going at it and a mini race developed between us. I was in my turbo S, stock, and he was in his regular turbo with Michelin cup tyres. I was behind him for a couple of laps and was able to pass him on the straight, pull away each lap and hold my advantage in the turns even though he had much better tires than my Brigdstone So2A's. As drivers, we were both evenly matched I guess so it's the extra power of the turbo S that made the difference.

    W8MM,

Interesting dyno. info. I am mulling over a 997TT when that one comes out and I wonder if the T and TS versions will have similar power curves as the 996 has (I hear from internet talk that the hp #'s could be in the 480hp for T and 525hp for TS range). I too am interested in power for acceleration in the 0-100mph/0-160km per hour areas. I wonder also if a TS could be flashed to minimize T-lag and improve low-end power or if this would be mor readily handled with a T. Ant thoughts?

It's probably too early to decide what sort of performance characteristics the various 997 turbo motors might exhibit.

Presently, there are more than a few tuners who tinker with "improvements" to the 996TT motor, from programming changes to turbo-charger swaps to trick inter-coolers, etc.. A cursory review of the archives over at 6speedonline will turn up all sorts of trick component combinations that are said to simultaneously reduce lag and increase low-end torque, as well as total power, when compared to a stock set-up.

One has to assume that Porsche drive-train engineering has at least a passing interest in the accomplishments (as well as follies) of the gaggle of "improvers" that abound in the after-market. Perhaps the 997 turbo will surprise us.

Re: Review of Turbo "S" (or Powerkit Turbo)

    Thanks W8MM,

    I'll check it out.
