    McLaren P14

So here are the first real revealing spy shots of it. Doors are hinged on the roof towards the center and will cut into it, so it's certainly not a 570 LT or anything like that. Interestingly, the side is very well sculpted, yet there are no visible side intakes. Perhaps those panels will have a cut-out somewhere in them. Every other McLaren seems to need decent sized intakes, so I'd be surprised if this didn't.

    Re: McLaren P14

Actually there appear to be an intake just at the back of the door. Can barely see it. I guess the air comes up the crease in that hood and floors along that valley of the door right below the window. That's where the button to open the door is too, I assume, similar to the 570/P1.

That's a bit excessive. Offer it to 99.99999% of the world's population and they'll have a shit eating grin across their face.

    No exotics look awful.

    Re: McLaren P14

And McLaren went completely away from the styling of the 650/675/P1, this new styling direction makes the old cars looks ancient now.

Frank Stephenson was in town last night and I had a good chat with him on the styling direction of the P14 as it happens and here it is the spy photos of it haha.

    Re: McLaren P14

Frank is a fun guy. I'm sure you had some laughs along with the design talk.

To be fair, 355 styling looks ancient to 360, and 430 styling looks ancient to 458. Such is life with exotics after 4-5 years. Better than having 10 years of Gallardo and Murcielago. I'd always want to have the latest look, price being the same.

That said, I don't think the P1 look ancient. I personally think the 12C ages better than the 650S because it looks different than everything else.

That said, time moves forward. No reason to cling to the past if you have good design to go forward with. No one ever complained about getting a great looking car.

I especially like what they've done with the rear.  The 570 styling improved a lot on the 12C/650/etc rear which I never really liked.  This is really stylish IMO.  Just wish I could afford one..

Just buy a year or two old and you'll be able to afford it just fine. Depreciation will still be quite high IMO.

    Re: McLaren P14

The dash in the spy pics looks a lot flatter than the older cars too.

Still not the best looking (highly subjective of course), but I have to say McLaren improved their design a lot over a very short period of time. kiss

It is going to begin with a 7 as far as I know.

BTW, it looks like there is orange visible in spots, so details may still be covered up quite a bit. Hard to say. The orange is visible near where the wheel arch connects to the door.

    Re: McLaren P14

If McLaren gets rid of their turbo charged engines, I'm in.

Drove a RS6 yesterday after driving my R8 all the time and was reminded why I don't like turbo charged sports car engines anymore. No matter how good the setup is, there is always a lag and you can feel it. Very annoying.

However, I am pretty sure that McLaren is going to destroy the competition with their straight line performance, a 7 at the beginning is probably indicating a 0-200 kph performance of under 8 seconds and 0-300 kph under 22 seconds. This puts new pressure on the competition, a lot of pressure. Unless the new McLaren cars are heavier or their engines are only powerful on paper.

I wonder how McLaren deals with emissions and sound emissions regulations... yes (so here goes my desire for a n/a engine from them )

I was hoping the 570S was going to be NA with a 9k rpm redline (would work even better than 991 GT3 with 8 cylinders).  But it would never keep up with the motor they ended up using (basically same as 12C and 650S)....

    Re: McLaren P14

I talked to Frank last night about these pictures.

They are not SPY POHTOS. The car was testing at their secure secret location and McLaren took these pictures, and they leak them out themselves. Frank was surprised it came out so quickly but oh well, McLaren marketing is always weird.

The car he styled has a different front, different than in the pic as the test mule has a fake front bumper.

    Power yes will be 700+

    Re: McLaren P14

Makes sense about the front. You can see the front bumper has weird layering going on near the intakes and edges.

Then plan on driving that R8 for the rest of your life. ;)

NA is dead unless it comes with a hybrid, but even that just sounds like more work the necessary. Turbos are here to stay unless electric completely replaces the ICE.

    Re: McLaren P14

Here are much better quality and larger images. You can see a lot of painted orange body underneath the grey. Looks like all the cooling will probably be channeled along the valley between the side windows and into the door, a la P1/570S.

Edit: Hmm, seems like the forum is automatically resizing them. Oh well.

True but maybe not really necessary? I still believe that new engine technology can change, especially for more expensive cars, that annoying "put a turbo into every engine" routine.

In the US, some tuners offer 800 to 2000 hp in the R8 by turbo charging it. Absolutely dumb thing to do, ruining the best part of the car.

I don't want to believe that n/a engines will be extinct soon.

On the other hand, Ferrari and McLaren, maybe even Porsche customers seem to prove that they don't seem to care much about the type of engine they have in their cars.

I really recommend to any turbo charged engine sportscar owner to testdrive the 458 Speciale, the F12, the R8, the Huracan or the Aventador. This is not only about the sound!

    Re: McLaren P14

The vast majority of people don't notice the turbo lag you say exists. As far as I'm concerned, there is no lag in my 12C. I doubt there is in a 911 Turbo or a 488.
