I understand that Porsche evolves with emission regulations and technological advances. Regardless, I'll never own a 4 cylinder turbo of any brand. It simply can't provide the emotional impact I'm looking for. All the extra badging and claiming a connection to a race car of a previous generation may work for some, but I find it to be disingenuous. I'm going to take good care of my 981 GTS, it will be my last Porsche.

I have a Mini Coupe JCW with a turbo charged 4-cyl. engine. I like driving this car, it is comfy (seriously) and perfect for the city but I have no emotional attachment to this car whatsoever. Nothing. Zero. Zilch.

I got older and the emotional part of a car started to be more important somehow. In the past, it had to be fast only, anything else didn't matter. Like I said...I got old...erSmiley

I like how the new Boxster looks, Porsche paid attention to details, even if the interior is still the old one, basically. What this car lacks is driving emotions and while it is very agile and feels direct, the fun comes from the engine as well. I do not want to dramatize the lack of a better exhaust/engine sound because the car is not muted but I miss the old Boxer Flat Six, even if torque delivery/level is much better now, especially for city driving.

    Re: 718 Boxster

I was checking some prices with my friend and we noticed something very interesting. I hope someone can chime in and explain this situation.

Brand new Cayman (300 PS) - 51.623 Euros in Germany

Used Cayman (272 PS) 2013 with 50k on clock - 43.490 Euros (this is cheapest one we saw on mobile.de)

So, is it possible that 3yr old car with damn 50k on clock lost less than 10k? Or we are searching used cars on wrong place.

    Re: 718 Boxster

There is no 2013 Cayman in the US... Goes 2012 then 2014. Wikipedia says the same.

    Maybe look at 2012s

    Re: 718 Boxster

remember the OPC markup is usually 10K on trade, so lost 20K at least (assuming list was paid)

Certainly shows how optimistic dealers can be.. Guess you can assume they'd drop it a bit, and also don't forget pricing in the options on the new price..

I visited mobile.de again. Here is 2014 Cayman (272 PS), 40k on clock, standard equipment. Price - 48.990 Euros angry

    http://suchen.mobile.de/fahrzeuge/details.html?id=231340832&scopeId=C&damageUnrepaired=NO_DAMAGE_UNREPAIRED&isSearch...

I will repeat, brand new Cayman with 300 hp and 0 km on clock is 51.623 Euros.

It could be they are hoping (or maybe have experience) that used 6-cylinder Caymans command a premium over new 4-cylinder turbo 718 Caymans.

    Re: 718 Boxster

You could be right, but in that perspective entry-level Porsche model is holding its price better than super limited editions, which is, kinda silly blush

How do you know the specs of these cars you're comparing though? A $40K used one might of have a $70K MSRP.

Could be.. I know this site only represents the 3% but I can't remember anyone showing any desire for the 718 at all.. I'm a serial Boxster fan but can't even be arsed to go and try a 4-cyl one..

Exactly, its not particularly "desirable" car among people who are ready to pay premium price. I didnt paid attention on used Boxster prices for years until my friend asked me to look for some ads together with him.

    Re: 718 Boxster

I reckon 981 GTS values wil be rock solid.. I also wonder if the idea is to drive the fussy enthusiasts into coughing up for GT cars so they can get on with the real business of selling 4-cyl cars to the masses..

I agree, Cayman GTS and especially Cayman GT4 - those are awesome! But basic models to hold value so well, this was huge surprise for me!

    Re: 718 Boxster

I think you're just too used to buying or looking at high-end cars. more $50K cars don't depreciate that badly over a couple years like high-end ones do.

    Re: 718 Boxster

Over the weekend I had the opportunity to do some 400 km (half Autobahn, half winding mountain b-roads) behind the wheel of a 718 2.0. Porsche did a great job again in finetuning the suspension (PASM) and steering: more feedback compared to the 981 and excellent roadholding at topspeed. While the engine is powerful enough for a canyon carver and even climbs up to 275 km/h on the Autobahn rather quickly (for a 4-pot turbo astonishing push at high rpm all the way up to redline) the "character" of the engine (or lack thereof...) does not fit the car at all IMHO and definitely "cheapens" the Boxster driving experience (as described in the top gear report on the car). To me the engine feels like a rumbling rough thing compared to the silky smooth 6-flat NA and does not belong into a Porsche commanding a premium price (sticker price was 78 kEUR with partial leather and standard seats). And this is even before taking the "sound" into consideration. Comment from Mrs. PJ: "whoever said this car sounds like a Beetle is insulting the Beetle" Smiley The PSE makes it only louder but not nicer SmileyI never thought that a "wrong" engine can spoil the driving experience so much in an otherwise great and lovely car Smiley

I'd agree Achim having driven both versions of the car at Silverstone. The S version sounds even worse than the 2.0 Smiley and the new engines comprehensively ruin what otherwise would be a significant improvement over 981. It is priced crazily, but amazingly I have seen quite a few 718 on the roads in Southern England.

It seems that it is mainly the infamous 3 % hard core Porsche drivers that are not happy with the 718 .

I read now a few reviews from different magazines and they all love it and think it is a way better car then the older car . They even think the new engine is better suited to the car and nicer is real life driving conditions .

The only criticism seems to be : nostalgia about the 6 cylinder from previous owners

There will always be those who protect their own property. If you would have forced an 981 owner  into a 718 I can bet that all the negatives would disappear with time and they would start focusing on the improvements.

It's like with everything. It doesn't matter what the manufacturere does. They will never satisfy 100%. If they can achieve 75% that is fabulous figures. I never so far seen anything on the internet, where it is possible to add comments, where everybody agree to something. It will probably never happen either Smiley

I'm sorry but in that last video, the boxster S sounds like shit.  Smiley

If I was in the market, I would search for a pre-facelift car, and a GTS if possible. I'd be happier still with a 997 mkII carrera S.

    Re: 718 Boxster

The 718 is a very good Porsche and better than the previous one in terms of key performance indicators . The flat six "magic" , however, is gone but this alone does not make the 718 a lesser Porsche (although it does not sound subjectively good).
