Wow - close call indeed. Another big advantage to New Zealand (for those that may not know... it has never had snakes).
Well...not quite true I'm afraid...

You find them on the beaches only though...or in the cold water (thanks god I would never take a bath in such cold water ).
Hawaii has no snakes though, no natives at least.

Really there is only one terrifying predator in NZ: the sandfly. Tiny but rips you to bits and if they get infected just miserable. We coat ourselves in 50/50 mix of Dettol and baby oil which allows no shirt and shorts
