They could just avoid this issue by having the car automatically put the car in park if the door opens for the first time or goes through a close/open cycle. If the person needs it in neutral or reverse or something like that, then they can just move the lever again. The need to keep a car in anything other than park while the driver's door is open is a very rare occurrence for most people. I can't think of the last time I needed to do it, and if I did, it would be a minor inconvenience to change it again.

Problem solved.

For that to be possible with just a software change, a servo system capable of "automatically" shifting the lever to park when the given conditions prevail has to have been fitted to the car.
As far as I have been able to make out from the little information in this thread that does not appear to be the case, which is why FIAT Chrysler has not yet been able to come up with a fix.
