This is Ariels riposte to the Caterham Levante we discussed earlier. All I can say is wow.

It seems that this is the week for complete insanity - just two days after we brought you news of a 1000bhp/tonne Caterham 7, Ariel has announced its newest, fastest version of the Atom track car - the 500.

Using the same supercharged, forty valve 2.4 litre V8 as the 'Levante' the new Atom is also endowed with the 'magic' 1000bhp/tonne and features the same paddleshift six speed gearbox as its countryman.

The Somerset car gets a few more external changes, which include two enormous wings, twin intakes for the intercoolers, a unique paint job, magnesium alloy wheels and carbon fibre panels. Like the 7, it also gets up-rated stoppers.

Simon Saunders, Director of Ariel, said: "This is an interesting project for us and an experimental departure from what we normally produce.
