I have driven my 997 S now through 8 winters without problems . Even if a few times I just barely made it up my driveway . With a front engine and RWD I would of have to leave the car somewhere on the street . 

These situations are pretty rare , maybe 3 or 4 times in 8 years, so , yes, one can live with RWD if you do not go regularly to the mountains with the car .  But the few times where you get into a heavy snow storm , you are happy and relieved to have AWD .

I believe the 911 is superior over other RWD cars in this sense, thanks to the rear weight bias. Engine in the front, regardless if it is the front or rear wheels driving, is not optimal for steep inclines.
