Thought I would post this to help those who are in the ordering process. This is a relatively inexpensive option (around $385) that I wasn't sure about when I ordered my 997. I was afraid that the dimming would be too aggressive (too dark), leaving the driver (me) seeing two bright dots of the headlights and nothing else--such as silhouettes of cars and road structures. From my limited experience so far, I've found that it is very nicely done--not too dark at all, and just enough for my taste. It is, for example, less dark than the (manual) darkening of the other 2 cars that I have (Lexus LS 400 and Land Cruiser). For the 997, the dimming is even more useful as your seat height is so low that the headlights of most cars behind you tend to be right on your eyes. As always, YMMV, and hope this helps.
I purchased my 997S in November 2004 optioned out by the dealer (Basically fully loaded). Arctic silver/ stone gray full leather/Nav/Bose/Classic wheels/adaptive seats/and a few other goodies......exactly the way I would have ordered it myself. Still had to wait a few months because here on the west coast there were many people "in line". For some reason the dealership missed the auto dim rearview, side view mirrors. I didn't think a $92K car would not have that option as standared (my $20K LS chevy silverado work truck has it standard). Not so, so I'll just flip the switch and see total darkness at night (better than being blinded by Xenon lights on Suv's). Even if it becomes available as a Tequipment option you can bet it will cost $$$$. As a matter of fact if you own a 996 the cable harness + the rear view mirror are available for close to $1000.00 total, and you still have the side mirrors to deal with. At least the heated headlight washers came standard on my S.......and boy they really come in handy here in San Francisco! I've gotten use to it now and just flip the switch but come on Porsche!!! Really!!
