Ummmm, yep. It's a heritage/retro thing, to make the car proportionally reminiscent of the early bathtub Speedsters.

Well, in my opinion, the first time I saw the 996 convertible, it reminded me a lot of the speedster.
With the 964/ 993, the roof just "sat" on the back of the car, folded.

With the 996/ 997, with the integrated tonneau cover that slides backward during the operation, it get's that inverted bathtub look again.
Not very elegant if you ask me, but a clean solution as to how to store the roof, and that's what gives the 996/997 that infamous fat arse.
With the tonneau cover, I think the 996/997 looks most like the speedster when the roof is up actually.

A 997 Speedster would be cool, but as one member said, it'd be quite redondant with the Boxster I guess.
The Boxster 986 did have a two part tonneau cover "a la" speedster in tequipment part, I guess the fact it's not available anymore means it wasn't very successful.
