HELP! New tires for my Boxey...but which?

Changing tires at next service this coming week.
Thought I'd go for conservative Bridgestone S-02, since they seem to give me the most bang-for-the-buck.
Nice reviews, excellent grip and it seems they are also N-marked and approved for the Boxster (even tho I'm not very particular about that, to be honest).

BUT! Then I came across the TOYO PROXES T1-R and according to the reviewsa and tests, this TOYO tire just blew the rest if the compettition to bits.
I have never tried a Toyo tyre, and the name alone sounds horribly cheap and lo-quality----but it seems it really rocks. And it has excellent milage, too.
They talk about 25-40000 km without a problem.

    Anyone know this tyre?
    Any recommendations?

I'm picking either the S-02, the Potenza RE-050A or this Toyo, so unless you have discovered the Holy Grail of tires in another brand, I'm not gonna pick Michelin, Yokohama, Dunlop, Goodyear etc.

All good tires, but they dont test better than the S-02 and all cost more.

    Another Q:
Does your car NEED a tyre pressure gauge installed, or can you mount Runflats on a regular Boxster?

Please let me know ASAP as I have to order soon.
    Thanks!

Re: HELP! New tires for my Boxey...but which?

all i've read about runflats tells me that they shouldn't be used on a car without minitoring and that they are heavier and handle worse than non-runflats
the reason they are used is that the cars do not have enough space for a spare, or because of the size differential F/R makes it impractical for 1 spare

Re: HELP! New tires for my Boxey...but which?

    Dr Phil

I would never, ever economise on tyres. Thet are the only connection with your pride and joy and the road, ultimately your life depends on them. If it was me I'd fit Michelins every time. And definitely stick with "N" designation.

Re: HELP! New tires for my Boxey...but which?

Tim, I hear you. The tires I choose between are all premium grade, so Im not gonna pick lousy rubber for my wee boxey.
The Potenza RE050 have nice test results, the Michelins dont seem that impressive....but I believe either would work fine.
As for the N-designation, I'm not sure what they will do for me, other than cost me a lot more. My current tires are non-N, and they seem to work fine...?

Re: HELP! New tires for my Boxey...but which?

    Greetings that man!

I'm sure there is nothing wrong with Bridgestone Potenza's, dont get me wrong , I don't know whether this is more critical for the newer cars, (My 987 is my first and in all likelyhood only Porsche - still on original tyres -) but all the experts here on Rennteam (and I'm not one of them, I hasten to add) , and my car handbook strongly advise fitting only "N" grade tyres that are designed for Porsche - and the Porsche is designed around them also, of course.

Re: HELP! New tires for my Boxey...but which?

the potenza s02 is designated "N3" or "N2". Maybe that means it's P approved?
The Potenza RE50 sits on the Enzo - so if its good enough for that....

HELP! I need a tyre expert!!!

Re: HELP! New tires for my Boxey...but which?

im thinking abt changing tyres aswell. ive been doing a lil bit of mischief on the roads here so ill be running out of rubber any time now (atleast in the rear). I was also thinking abt inflating them with Nitrogen, any one tried this yet? I heard it improves mileage and acceleration.

Well if the tyres that are fitted on a badge-engineered Fiat are good enough for you, then go ahead

Re: HELP! New tires for my Boxey...but which?

N rating infers Porsche approved, but different tyre brands and types carry N ratings for different Porsche cars.

In the UK Bridgestone SO2s are only N rated for 993 and 986 Boxster. 987 and 997 cars carry different N numbers for what is apparently the same tyre (eg Conti SportContact2).

The fact it has an N rating and is the size for the car doesn't necessarily mean its porsche approved for your vehicle.

I also find it interesting that a lot of US based owners consider Kumhos as premium brand - in the UK they are considered very second rate, i wouldn't buy a hot hatch with Kumhos on never mind a Porsche.

Re: HELP! New tires for my Boxey...but which?

Kumho considered a premium brand in the US? Where did you get that from?

Erm, isn't plain air 80% Nitrogen anyway?
Maybe you should use Hydrogen instead to reduce the unsprung mass of the wheels a little?

Just because they are featured on vehicles shown on BET doesn't mean they are premium.

And you could drive like your wheels are on fire, which could easily happen

Re: HELP! New tires for my Boxey...but which?

havent u guys ever heard of inflating tyres with nitrogen or hydrogen (cant remember). they say its better because it loses less air pressure (loses less gas in this case), it also makes the car get better mileage and go faster.

Re: HELP! New tires for my Boxey...but which?

Theoretically, a lighter than air gas would make the wheels lighter... but we're talking grams here at best... They have a great TV show here in the US called Myth Busters, and they pseudo scientifically "test" urban legends. One of them was to fill a (American) football with helium vs. air... they built a mechanical launcher that kicked the ball in a controlled indoor environment and found that helium vs air had no significant impact in how far the ball would fly.

Sure, our cars don't drive on footballs... but I think the impact with tires is similarly insignificant...

Re: HELP! New tires for my Boxey...but which?

The weight of the gas/air is not significant compared to the weight of the tyre/wheel combination. They use nitrogen (I think) in F1 types as it expands and contracts less as the temperature changes so the pressures remain (more) constant.

Re: HELP! New tires for my Boxey...but which?

From everything I have read, the choice is Michelin PS2s all the way.

You can check the www.tirerack.com website. They do good tyre comparisons.

Re: HELP! New tires for my Boxey...but which?

I got the Contosport Contact II marked N2 and they are not very beautiful (ugly shoulders IMO), but a LOT stiffer than the previous Dunlop SP9090 I had on before. The Dunlops weren't N-marked.

They seem very neutral so far, meaning I haven't felt any particular performance decrease or enhancement until now and I havent been pushing the car at all these past days.
    Arhl be barch.
