    Nürburgvada or Nevadaschleife?

Las Vegas already has a copy of the Eiffel tower, albeit only half the size of the original. Now, it looks like there might be a new project on the way. But this time, it's the Eifel with one 'f' that's targetted: the (in)famous Nürburgring Nordschleife!

Bruton Smith, CEO of Speedway Motorsports Inc. (SMI), recently announced on SiriusXM Sports that his company is considering building a full-size clone of the Nordschleife just outside Las Vegas. [read more...]

    Re: Nürburgvada or Nevadaschleife?

That's very interesting. But of course they won't be able to replicate the changeable weather (and therefore track conditions) in the Nevada desert :)

This is the beauty of the Nordschleife. It is a living thing, constantly changing ... so the challenge keeps changing ...

This new track will be cool but not quite the same thing ...

Very true, but I hope they build it anyways Smiley

    Me too :)

Las Vegas is a super venue ... it can stay open all year round with reliable weather ... perhaps the track surface will get too hot even ... if the air temperature is above 40C, I can't imagine how hot the track temperature would become ...

NB: Austin, Bahrain, Abu Dhabi F1 GPs all take place during the winter ... summer temps are a different story ...

Sounds interesting but I'm still waiting for a water park to open in Las Vegas first.

I miss the good old Wet'n Wild there...it closed many years ago and never has been replaced by anything else.

Each time we are in Las Vegas, we miss a water park. The pool areas around the hotels are horrible, mostly drunk people with tattoos and bad manners, not really great for the kids. The hoes are the only thing worth watching but they all look kind of the same, so it gets boring. Smiley

Water park first, Nordschleife...ehhm...Nevadaschleife second. Smiley Smiley

    Re: Nürburgvada or Nevadaschleife?

I heard Las Vegas has a serious long term water problem .. it relies heavily on the Lake Mead/Hoover Dam area and water levels are gradually falling ... so it could be that there is no replacement water park in that area ...

I understand the problem is also because of greater water usage due to far more residential properties being built there over the recent past.

    Re: Nürburgvada or Nevadaschleife?

Though I very much like Las Vegas, a race track would be a very challenging project I would assume. Let's just think about the temperatues you have there for most of the year...currently, I would not imagine myself to pilot a car on a 100+ F° tarmac...at least not for very long, and I think, the car (tires) would not too...

    Re: Nürburgvada or Nevadaschleife?

Flop of the year. I can already see it.

    Re: Nürburgvada or Nevadaschleife?

And why try to replicate another track? Why not try to build a track that is genuinely unique and world-class in its own right?

    Re: Nürburgvada or Nevadaschleife?

I fail to understand the fascination with the NBR. It's a crappy track. Bumpy, narrow, no run-off, just plain dangerous. It has history which has built on itself like a snowball going downhill, but that is it.

I suggest that this guy get a little more creative and create a life-size AURORA slot-car-like track with over passes etc.

Brands Hatch, old Hockenheim (thru the forest), Monza with the banking, the Oesterreichring, and Suzuka all nicer tracks.

    Re: Nürburgvada or Nevadaschleife?

That someone would not appreciate the challenge of the Nring is simply Amazing.Smiley

Anyway, Las Vegas already has the Ho'ring, the strip.

Vegas N'ring would be a nice addition if they duplicate the elevation changes. Indy used to let tourists drive laps on the track. A Nevada version of the N'ring would draw a lot of fast car people from LA. Local tire, tow truck and ambulance companies will also do well.

This is heresy and you should be tied to a race-car during one full lap of the Nordschleife. SmileySmiley

Now, I know that you are a cheapskate, because you are staying at the cheap hotel casinos like Planet Hollywood.   You get what you pay for, and if you stay at the cheaper hotels, you will end up with the riff-raff.

I like some of the classic F1 tracks too (eg Spa-Francorchamps) BUT the Nordschleife is a unique challenge.

The only way to properly judge the NoS is to drive it ...

My first trip there, I drove 8 laps ... i had goosebumps on my skin ... it was exhilarating ... I felt alive ... one of the best motoring experiences of my life ...

I stay at Wynn, Bellagio and Venetian and they're FILLED with riff-raff, wall to wall, 24/7. By riff-raff, I mean people weighing 300 lbs, wearing threadbare cotton shorts, tank-tops and flip-flops; toothless chain smokers at the slots; groups of young men hoping to pass as dangerous; groups of young women, drunk; couples so completely inebriated they come to a complete stop in the hallway, forgetting where they are.

Riff-raff are people who go to the Paris, thinking they've seen Paris. Riff-raff is hotel staff greeting you in French. Here's what's fun to do: answer them back in French. "Pensez-vous que la vie est absurde? Comment la vie pourrait ne pas etre absurde si nous sommes ici a Las Vegas en parlent francais?"

    Re: Nürburgvada or Nevadaschleife?

Write me down as one who sees the NBR as rightfully one of the preeminent tracks in the world.  It is so long and varied that, to me, it is like a boiled-down version of the wold of sport driving in one place.  Its no coincidence that Germany has long since built some of the best sports cars in the world, and that the Nurburgring is the performance benchmark by which they are all measured.  It drives the process of sports car evolution toward a balanced, multifaceted picture, by providing a balanced, multifaceted metric as the primary feedback filter.

This project sounds pretty cool to me, but how will they thoroughly replicate all the elevation changes?  You would have to find a spot amazingly similar, and still move a (green) hell of a lot of dirt to make it match closely in the end.  I seriously doubt this will go forward.

One cool implication that Nevada's more predictable weather has going for it though, is that there wouldn't be as much contention about 'ring times used as a standard for vehicle comparisons.  If this is done well (if done at all!), could the Nevada facility steal some business/attention away from the NBR?  I can still see the Nurburgring being absolutely necessary for winter/cold/rain conditions too though...

    Re: Nürburgvada or Nevadaschleife?

I was comparing the Bellagio vs Planet Hollywood (former Alladin).  The clientele who used the pool and the environment was vastly different (Bellagio was clean, people were a little snobbish, Planet Hollywood pool was dirty, people looked like they came directly from WalMart).  But this was about 6 years ago.  Maybe they let anyone into the pool areas, even without a room key?  The reason I know is that we stayed the first couple of days at the Bellagio, and we didn't like it because it was very family unfriendly (I think we were one of the few families who stayed there) and overpriced.  So I switched over to Planet Hollywood.  Well, I got what I paid for.

I think the key that I saw was at the pool area, where you have to show a room key to get in.  That's where you see the big difference in the people.  Also, the casino table areas where all the minimum bets were $25 or $100, which tends to separate people.
