    Sad News

The HK Ferrari Club arranged a road trip to Shanghai to watch F1. Unfortunately, before arriving Shanghai, a 355 crash to a bus at high speed and the couple was dead. The newspaper said the speed was over 120kph; however, by looking at the damage of the car, I think it crash at around 150 to 160kph.

    Re: Sad News

My heart goes out to their families .

    Re: Sad News

    Very sad

You cannot really tell the speed from looking at the car. They died because they submarined under the bus and/or the bus overran them. No signs really of the vehicle coming apart or bending from a hard impact. Speed might have been a factor in causing the accident to happen in the first place but I doubt it was a factor in the fatalities.

Not that any of this really matters to the families.

    Re: Sad News

The bus was break down and station at the break down lane on left. The 355 lost control (no idea why, the weather was good) and smash to the rear side of the bus. There were also some people hurt inside the bus. However, if the speed is not very high, I guess it won't damage that bad since I think Ferrari chasis is quite stiff. However, the driver had another accident some days ago with a 348, he crashed it and finally turn the car upside down.
Nevertheless, it is sad to see people die from car accident.

    Re: Sad News

I heard this last night but now its confirmed, im sad to hear they couple died. Another crash recently involving a Diablo into a taxi where the passenger of the taxi was thrown out and killed due to not wearing a seat belt. I look at these accidents and try to learn from them.

    Re: Sad News

Of course it is sad, but... this just shows how unsafe these F-cars are. A total disaster. The cabin should not collapse the way it did.

Sorry but I cannot agree with this. There are design limits on everything and no car is designed to survive an impact like this into a bus. In other words, you cannot expect any car to survive absolutely every possible impact.

Yes, in the end, that's all that really matters.

    Re: Sad News

What a stupid conclusion to come too! You have no idea what speed the accident occured at and what part of the bus it hit! If the any car was doing 140 - 160 km and it runs into a stationary object, like a rear bumper of a bus, there is no chance for any car! Plus you do not know what the fire fighters did to the car to get the people out of the car.

I guest you would have the same conclusion about the Mercedes Benz 500S, did you see the photos of Princes Diana's car right after the accident?

It looks like the 355 slid side ways and hit the bus behind the drivers front wheel, which is the worst place to hit with any car

Don't bother replying to this ADias character. His main object in life seems to be attacking anything to do with Ferrari or their drivers.

Not at all! Please do not confuse me w/ Nick Berry in his crusade against Porsche. I do appreciate Ferraris - many however do not survive crashes well. It is a known fact, and its drivers must take that into account.

Stupid conclusion? First of all, I doubt the impact speed was 160km/h... but just look at the number of fatal Ferrari crashes. It is a well documented fact that the cabin rarely survives a crash. Hey... a Porsche 908 or 917 and many others would not survive it either. That's the nature of some designs where cabin survivability was not the no.1 goal.

That is an excellent example. The cabin of the S was mostly intact. The right front passenger, who was the only passenger wearing a seatbelt, survived the accident. The dead passengers were not wearing seatbelts and would probably have survived the accident should their belts be in position.

Is this really true? I did not know this until now. Strange what the press doesn't always pay attention to.

Absolutely true and well reported at the time.

    Re: Sad News

    It's true.

    Re: Sad News

its true. lady diana and her boyfriend, the back seat passengers, would almost certainly have survived if they had worn seatbelts. damn shame.

i don't think we have enough data to make any judgements about the hong kong crash above.

    very very sad.....
