Oh, and with Vettel, Rosberg, Glock, Heidfeld, there are some good chances for a german driver to win!

I hope Vettel wins. He is the most authentic talent in F1 since Alonso, IMO.

Vettel really outperformed Webber with only slightly lower weight (5kg).

Yes, Kubica must be very light - he's one of the tallest, heaviest drivers on the grid yet only 650kg. Very low fuel. Heidfeld usually likes to have a longer first stint but Heidfeld is also carrying KERS but Kubica isn't.

Heikki much heavier than Hamilton but qualified higher! Buemi also - much heavier than Bourdais but still qualified higher.

Rosberg much lighter than Nakajima therefore qualified higher i.e Williams drivers have different strategies.

I think the controversial rear diffuser will be adjudged to be legal by the FIA in April. I think other teams will need to design their own equivalents of it. Toyota will need to use a less flexible rear wing though.

Most interestingly, the cars without KERS seem to be the faster ones.

Looks all set for a really close-run season.

The BBC coverage got off to a good start....I very much like the commentary team who seemed to gell with each other very quickly.

I must say the hairs went up on the back of my neck when the old theme tune was used in the introduction.  Fleetwood Mac's "The Chain" is almost synonymous with F1 and I almost expected Murray Walker's voice to shout Go-Go-Go.

Can't wait to see how this one turns out...

I think the new grid order is fantastic!!!  Got SO bored with McLaren and Ferrari last year.  Brawn GP is a breath of fresh air, plus I like Button way more than I do Hamilton.  Branson does indeed have the golden touch.

I've been preaching, in a few recent threads, that it would be great if Jenson could join Hamilton at McLaren to form an all British team.

Well thank heavens no one heard me... because, I agree with you Alex, Button is a far better Ambassador for our country and long overdue a competitive car.

What a fairytale - a few weeks ago Jenson had no drive and his future looked seriously compromised.  Now he's on pole position and Hamilton is really struggling.

Brawn GP have yet to prove themselves in race conditions...but what a start. Smiley

I know McLaren will sooner or later get back on the pace, but what a prospect we have with Button & Hamilton squaring up on a level playing field. Smiley

With 'Golden Balls' Branson now in tow and, possibly some help from Bernie, Ross Brawn is now a major contender.  He's hardly likely to let that slip.

I say - bring it on....this could be one of the best seasons in F1 history...Smiley

AMAZING RACE !!! the Brawn team did an awesome job, one for the history books 1 and 2 on their debut. guess the drivers really have to get used to the way cars behave now with the new regulations. i just hope ferrari pulls it together, yeah i'm a ferrari guy at heart, even if they sucked today.

Re: 2009 Australian F1 Grand Prix from Melbourne

I hope this diffuser issue is not ruled illegal by FIA (until Ferrari catch up, that is) and the points are taken away.

Anyway, If not McLaren-Mercedes then BrawnGP-Mercedes is alright with meSmiley

Re: 2009 Australian F1 Grand Prix from Melbourne

What a cinderella story for Brawn.

What a bonehead moves by Vettel and Kubica.

What a climb from the back of the grid for Hamilton.

Rosberg's drive is so fantastic to watch.

But oh my how UGLY the new F1 cars are, they look so tall and narrow, it's like they are squished like in the cartoons. From the front, they look like a ugly bulldozer. Some of those with a higher nose looks even like a elephant, or a mammoth.

Re: 2009 Australian F1 Grand Prix from Melbourne

WOW F1 is back, what an exciting race this was. I guess a lot of hectic stuff happened due to all the regulations, but it seems to work quite well. Let's see if things hopefully settle a little with that KERS.. right now i feel like i don't want it next race for any cars...

congrats to Brawn!! What a performance for those guys, you really see their hard work with limited funds and last minute scheduling in Jensons eyes.

I was hoping for Vettel, but Kubica gave him NO SPACE!!! His mistake IMHO, but you live and learn... young drivers i guess haha.

McLaren struggling, but they will get it together..

Ferrari on the other hand needs some late nighters to get their ducks in a row haha.

    Gonna be a great season!

Now this is F1 race as it should have been from a long time! I´m glad to see a season where the battle is no more Ferrari - McLaren - Others.... Glad to see a new real talent: Vettel. Now let´s hope that he will have the car to win. And if the season goes like this.. maybe we will see a battle for championship between: Vettel - Barichelo - Rosberg - Button? That it will be interesting...

His performance in a uncompetitive car is almost on par with the great Senna, speaks volume of his raw skill level which people don't give him enough credit.

But really, this year's cars are more about skill than anything else, and up until Vettel/Kubica crash, one can see who the skilled drivers are, they are the one in the front half, and those that rely on cars in years passed.

Sorry but, I disagree big time. Hamilton was very, very lucky today and this is it.

Just look to statistics at formula1.com and look at Hamilton lap speed-he only managed to make 13. fastest lap in the race.

Nice to know that Hamilton's die hard fans here are with him, unlike UK press which already have new(truth, well deserved) hero-Button.

Re: 2009 Australian F1 Grand Prix from Melbourne

BMW Sauber team principal is certain that the collision between Sebastian Vettel and Robert Kubica three laps before the end of the Australian Grand Prix cost the Pole his second victory in Formula 1.

The pair made contact as Kubica tried to pass Vettel for second position on the outside of Turn 4, having gained ground dramatically on the Red Bull as well as leader Jenson Button - both of whom were running on the softer slick tyres.

Kubica and Vettel, former BMW teammates, subsequently crashed into the barriers further on in the lap because of damage sustained in the initial impact.

But such was Kubica's late-race pace, that Theissen told the BBC that Vettel's failure to yield the corner cost BMW dearly: "Sebastian braked early and I thought: 'This is a clear-cut situation now, I know him, he won't do in any silly things.' But in this moment it had happened already.

"It's been very disappointing for both drivers, we are very confident Robert had won the race because he had closed in on the hard tyres," Theissen added.

"Both cars in front of him were struggling on the soft tyres. He was lapping about two seconds quicker and he lost probably a victory, Sebastian lost probably a podium position and both teams lost valuable points."

Brawn GP and Button dominated for much of the race, but while Theissen accepted Button and team-mate Rubens Barrichello had a performance advantage over BMW in Melbourne, he believes the severe drop-off on the soft tyres at the end of the race gave Kubica superior pace.

"The Brawns definitely had performance in hand on the car side, but they were struggling with the soft tyres as well," he said.

"The upside is that the car was really quick. Robert was putting in very quick laps on the hard tyres and that shows that we are on the pace which is good for the coming races."
