    Proper stone chip repair

Well, I picked up my new BMW on Saturday and less than 4 hours later I took a rock to the A pillar on the highway. It left a chip with one spot right down to the metal. Does anyone know how to best repair a stone chip? I've read some stuff on the 'Net with people talking about match sticks and sanding pens... I know the brush in touch-up paint sticks you get at the dealer do a pretty nasty job of it. Any help would be appreciated.Smiley

    Re: Proper stone chip repair

don't know in which way i can help you,but i can tell the first thing i do when i order/buy a car i will order a touch-up paint stick in colour of the car,due i can't live without...

Is not the best solution, but a good thing is just to don't see the metal(specially on dark colours).

And be sure that if you have a dark coloured car,the metal is silver,if you car is painted white the metal is black!

Read me too about something new on touch up paint, but don't know more..

Congrats on the new car - it's a pity this had to happen so soon...

If the chip is right down to the metal, I'd be tempted to get a bodyshop to do the repair.

Thanks for the info. It's "Space Grey Metallic", so the damage is, of course, white.

I just bought a 'number 1' brush at a hobby shop, and will pick up the paint stick later today at the dealer. Then I will spend a ridiculous amount of time thinking about how best to fix the damage. If I do a really poor job, maybe I will go to the bodyshopshop.

Typical , you can drive an old banger around for miles and not one stone will hit it..Pick a new one up and bang, how many times have I heard that, shame but do not let it spoil the enjoyment because sooner or later it happens anyway..

    Congrats all the same...

Edit:, If your going to use a touch up stick, make sure you do not over-load the brush with too much paint and purchase a very fine but stiff artist brush, I find these much more easier to use...

    Absolutely. Thanks!

    Re: Proper stone chip repair

There are numerous chip repair workshops, perhaps even the BMW dealer might help you out. So, about the nice stuff now... what model is it? How do you like it so far? Congrats on your new purchase!

+1 Reminds of my the day i got my first ever car, and it was brand new off the lot. Drove my beloved ford focus to school and while still in the car after having parked, this guy tried to parallel park into the spot in front of me and managed to back up right into my bumper Smiley

Anyways, as for the problem. Getting the stick in your paint will be the best for many occasions. I'd also sand the area around down in case you can actually see the depth of the chip. It is risky, but not difficult and in the end look almost 100% professional. Smiley

I always have a paint stick (Le Mans Blau) and also the BMW clear coat stick which is the final coat. It works like a charm everytime Smiley

    Re: Proper stone chip repair

^ Thanks for the advice. I have read some info on sanding it down and using some Meguiars products to get rid of the sanding marks etc. It's never easy, is it?

Thanks. I decided to get a '09 323i for my commuter / winter beater. I had a 330Ci and an M3 and they were both pretty decent in the snow with Pirelli's. It's Space Grey metallic. It's the face-lifted model with the nicer hood and rear LED's, 17" sport wheels and sunroof. I wasn't even considering the car until I saw it in the showroom with the new wheels. I had planned on a VW TDi, or a Lexus IS 250... but at 6' 4", I don't fit in the Lexus.Smiley

Congrats once again! Sounds like a very nice car indeed!
